85 nations, including Dominica, agree: gay people deserve protection from discrimination

85 countries signed a statement by the United Nations Human Rights Council to support gay rights on March 22.

By signing the statement, nations “call on States to take steps to end acts of violence, criminal sanctions and related human rights violations committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, encourage Special Procedures, treaty bodies and other stakeholders to continue to integrate these issues within their relevant mandates, and urge the Council to address these important human rights issues.” While the statement acknowledges that there has been some progress recently in human rights w/r/t sexual orientation and gender identity, it also acknowledges that there’s a lot left to do.

Earlier this month, President Obama called for international support in fighting discrimination:

“Human rights are the inalienable right of every person, no matter who they are or who they love. The U.S. government is firmly committed to supporting the right of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals to lead productive and dignified lives, free from fear and violence.”

And he (and the U.S., which is a member of the Human Rights Council and is trying to renew that membership despite concerns about its “biased and disproportionate focus on Israel”) got it. From 85 countries. The U.S. ambassador Susan Rice called the statement “historic.” In a joint release, Amnesty International, The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, and the Human Rights Watch called it “unprecedented.”

But predictably, not everyone supported defending gay rights.

– Before signing the (non-binding) statement, the ambassador from South Africa proposed creating a new group to study “new concepts such as sexual orientation” before trying to integrate them into international policy. Groups such as Lawyers for Human Rights and the Gay and Lesbian Equality Project contested this, obviously. South Africa eventually signed along with everyone else.

– The ambassador from Nigeria spoke against the statement, reportedly on behalf of the Africa Group, invoking heterosexuality, God, and saying that both men and women are needed to make babies. The Africa Group was previously behind a vote to remove sexual orientation from a resolution that protects against arbitrary execution. However, the ambassador still said that sexual orientation should not be criminalized. Nigeria did not sign the statement.

– The ambassador from Pakistan, speaking on behalf of 57 nations in which Muslim people are a majority, argued against the statement and didn’t sign.

– The Russian ambassador reportedly said that “these people” do not deserve “special rights” and also didn’t sign.

But! Countries such as Dominica, Honduras, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and the Central African Republic did sign. Which is awesome, and makes it seem slightly more likely that the vision of a unified global stance against anti-gay violence can become a reality.

    In the past I would have had to rely on ants to bring news for me, but now I have internet in the grave. I am very thankful that the government sees it fit to protect the rights of gay people. I was murdered just few months ago on the streets of Portsmouth just because the murderer felt that as a gay man I had no rights at all. He saw me like an animal on the side of the road. Sexuality is a very complex part of our existence and none of us can say that we truly understand it. So how can we be so angry and hateful towards people who we don’t fully understand. Why should we as a christian nation be so heartless towards anyone. Jesus Christ hung out with prostitutes, didn’t he?

      “DECRIMINALISATION”? That makes it sound to me that you support gay people virtually being beaten, harrassed, tormented, and/or possibly being killed? That doesn’t seem very Christian like to me, pretty much praising the abuse and suffering of another people.

      They aren’t “supporting gay,” they’re simply supporting their protection from people who insist and think that beating them, harrassing them, tormenting them, and possibly even killing them is okay. This isn’t about supporting gay people and their acts, it’s about protecting them and giving them “equal rights” in a sense, much like in America with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 making it illegal for any and all blacks to be treated unfairly simply because they were black.

      So I’ll say it again, they aren’t supporting gay sex, gay people, gay marriage, or anything like that. What they are supporting is their right to be protected from discrimination from people who either hate and/or fear them.

    Each time the issue of homosexuality comes up, commentators provide the same argument from the same perspective all the time. With all what these people have to say, has anyone of them ever spoken to a gay person to understand their feelings and learn about their gay orientation on a whole? Have they read any literature on what psychologists and other professionals have to say on the subject of human sexuality? Do these people ever take the time to talk to their partners, brothers, fathers and sons to know for sure that they are not as heterosexual as they seem? It’s time that we start writing comments that are informed and backed up with practical knowledge instead of relying on just stereotypical information and hate, which is just pure ignorance.

      If I am put in prison my cell will be my pulpit. I will stand at the bars and read my Bible aloud to all who can hear me in other cells, and every person who walks by. This Pentecostal preacher will be heard praying, and worshiping God in the tongues of men and of angels as far as the human voice can carry.

      Any prime minister or president, king or queen, who refuses to uphold the code of morals God has given us in the Sacred Scriptures and bows to the sodomites is a fool. That person is taking his or her nation out from under the protection of Almighty God, and surrendering their leadership to the evil one.

    I want to applaud the government of Dominica for that great step towards human rights and civilization, and for standing against discrimination! Personally i have never encountered racism but history told me about great men like Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy, and so many more people who lost their lifves for that great cause, M.L.K marched against racism,bigotry,prejudice,so that all men would have equal rights.We are a small nation that embrace our culture and thats all good and we call our self a christian nation ok,but christianity came from europe! While Samuel,Moses,Abraham,David and Jesus the christ came from Africa! So who is to say who’s wrong and who’s right, we sit down and want to target one group of people how hypocritical of us, do we come out against Bigamy, fornication, adultry, theft, child molestation all these acts the bible teach against? like we try to hate and discriminate against some people that didn’t even have a choice in the matter, is the same as someone hating you because you are black or white or short or tall. I am positively attracted to women but thats me, as far as i see the ones with the problem here are the so call straight people who talk against a brother or sister thats different, i dont see gay people trying to beat up straight people, so yes the problem is you mr and miss straight.Yes black men use to be hanging from trees like strange fruits just because they were black.     Let us stick to the topic. Supporting and signing an agreement of discrimination against people of this orientation, approving and legislating it are two different matters.
    I support that people have a right to their lifestyle. This does not mean I approve of it and that, abnormal practices as homosexuality, lesbianism and same sex so-called marriage should be legislated.
    Their right does not mean that God approves of it. God gave everyone a free mind and as it is stated He will not touch that free mind. However, we will conform to His Most Holy Will and live according to His Commands/Commandments otherwise bear the consequences of our actions.
    At the same time Our Lord Jesus Christ expects that we will treat everyone with due respect and dignity and accord them their human rights. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Vengeance is Mine. I will repay!” Leave them alone.
    Human rights in this case of practicing homosexuality is debatable. However, make no mistake, homosexuality is intrinsically wrong. I am unable to comprehend why some people are gays and lesbians. What has caused them to live such a lifestyle?
    God created human beings/babies. He did not create sin and the practice of homosexuality and lesbianism. Satan caused this. Make good note of that.
    My conclusion is that there is good and evil in the world. God and the enemy of God and of our souls, Satan is the cause of this. This evil one is responsible for evil of every nature and homosexual and lesbian abomination which exist in the world.
    Governments can issue only mandates that these people, as human beings should not be discriminated against. These are the mandates: ethical employment, housing and according them their due rights and dignity, as human beings. This is all that they are entitled to just as heterosexuals are accorded.
    Homosexuals are not entitled to legislation to observe their practices as being authentic. Their practices are abnormal.
    Everyone knows that God did not create Adam and Steve but Adam and Eve. Homosexuals and lesbians cannot pro-create babies. Yet, some of them want the best of two worlds as adoption and other means of getting babies. This in itself should indicate to the mortal and spiritual-minded that their actions are abnormal.
    There are some governments of the world as Christian as they appear to be, one of whom is President Obama (as much as I support him in other aspects), who have fallen into a trap, the trap of Satan by approving and legislating homosexuality that these people have a right to get married and live as normal heterosexual people. They do not have that right!
    GOD DID NOT GIVE THEM THAT RIGHT TO GET MARRIED NOR THOSE GOVERNMENTS TO LEGISLATE THIS ABOMINATION WHICH IS AGAINST HIS EXPECTATIONS. This is what gets me angry.
    Woe to those on that day of reckoning before God when they will see their error, too late, of approving and legislating homosexuality and same sex so-called marriage. It is not amusing to God and they will not be amused on that day to their eternal detriment.
    I urge every Christian, every law-abiding citizen, those who oppose this abomination which upsets specifically the majority of us to write your governments and express your opinion in no uncertain way but respectfully.
    Those governments who approve and legislate this abomination, they, too are going down slippery slopes along with homosexuals and lesbians. What is more, those governments are bringing down the wrath of God upon their nation and nationals. Give this a good thought.
    Those governments who did not sign such an agreement are within their right but are on the right track. Granted, they may not be perfect including those of us who oppose this abomination but rest assured that refusing to sign such an agreement is pleasing to God.
    NEVER APPROVE AND LEGISLATE HOMOSEXUALITY, LESBIANISM (as I call this) AND SO-CALLED SAME SEX MARRIAGE!

      The U.S. government is not supposed to be religious. The Constitution explicitly enforces a separation of church and state. This is why saying “one nation under God” is technically wrong under the Constitution. The Founding Fathers were primarily deists or skeptics, and they were thus not “religious.”

      I would remind you that a century ago, many racists believed the SAME about blacks. They referred to jazz, which African-Americans created, as “satanic” music. They called African-Americans devils and demons and abominations. And yet you happily embrace the beliefs of such people. How quickly we forget!

      The sins of Sodom and Gomorrah was not some of the people engaging in homosexuality but RAPE, inhospitality, hatred of strangers and making slaves of guests.

      I put my faith and trust in not only the Wisdom of Solomon, the Prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Zephaniah but especially and specifically in Christ who said,

      We did understand what the article said. However, among the violent crimes committed last year, including drive-by shooting, how many of them were against gays??? I thought the laws against violence and respecting of human rights were to protect all human beings (unless gays are not normal humans and they some alien law to survive on this planet). They are just being ridiculous.

      You see, the life of a homo is a direct attack against humans being alive. The active lifestyle of a homo says on a daily basis, people should stop having children and its time for humans to be extinct. You see if it was left to a homo, they would not be alive neither would any of us.

      The UN should take the time out to put some real work into passing resolution where children are not to leave their elderly parents in deplorable conditions and turn their backs and roam the world. Now we are talking human rights.

      How can you compare rapists to homosexuals? Why do people do this? A rapist, a child molestor, etc.–none of these people have anything to do with gay people. Some of them may be gay; some of them may be straight. Rapists and pedophiles are sick, twisted people; straight and gay are only orientations, and neither has to have anything to do with rape or molestation.

      And while I agree that this brings up the question of where lines will be drawn, why should sexual orientation be allowed to be discriminated against? It’s neither right nor wrong in of itself. And they DO need protection in the Caribbean right now. Jamaica is often called the most homophobic country on Earth. Until the world becomes more civilized, we need these laws.

      It is the same argument as race discrimination. Why have laws allowing blacks not to be discriminated, eh? Makes them sound better than everyone else, right? But you would be horrified to see such discrimination, and rightly so. We live in a world where racism still exists. Until racism, homphobia, etc. vanish, these anti-discrimination laws must be in place.

    Finally, some progressiveness. Violently anti-gay stances cannot work, politically or morally, in a civilized 21st-century world.

    I won’t get into the finer points of the argument, but I will say this: how can you belive that people choose their sexual orientation? A variety of women attract me, but I sure didn’t “choose” to like them. Moreover, in a world in which people can be killed for homosexuality, why would anyone willingly choose it? They wouldn’t. Therefore, the greatest likelihood is that it is not something you can choose. Oh, sure, a heterosexual person can choose to engage in same-sex operations, but this is not likely to happen, and this is not the same as saying the person is gay. How can you attack people for who they are? Soon, we will want to kill people for having red hair, for being too tall or too short, for things they cannot be held responsible for.

    Moreover, many animals engage in homosexual activity. By no means are homo sapiens the only animal to do so. It serves no procreative purpose, but, really, does the world NEED more people right now? I’m not advocating either celibacy or homosexuality as a way to lower the population, but to argue that the function of humans is only to procreate is particularly absurd in a globe where we don’t even have enough resources for our populations.

    Just because an old book says something is so, and just because your parents and their colonists told them the same, does not make it so. We must make our own decisions and be no one’s mental slaves, and we must respect, if not love, all human beings, unless they are truly evil, and it is a savage man like Hitler, not a homosexual, who is truly evil.

      The story of Sodom and Gomorrah has been used by people to condemn gays. The argument used by them is that God destroyed these cities because the people of these cities were homosexuals. In this section we will show conclusive BIBLICAL evidence that Sodom and Gomorrah were NOT destroyed because of homosexuals. The only book I will use to show this is the Bible. The Bible does not contradict itself because the it is the Word of God and God is not fickle.

      The beginning of this story is found in Genesis 13:

      Genesis 13:8-13

      So Abram said to Lot, “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. Now the men of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD. (NIV)

      Abraham and Lot were so wealthy that they had to separate because the land could not support both of them with all their family members, herds, and workers in one place Lot chose to move his family to the twin cities.

      The next time we hear about these cities is in Genesis 18:16-33. Here God tells Abraham his plan for Sodom and Gomorrah.

      Genesis 18:20-21

      Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.” (NIV)

      Abraham pleads for these cities because of his nephew Lot. While Abraham and God were talking, the other two angels go to Sodom. Let’s read for ourselves what really happened that day:

      Genesis 19:1-13

      The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. “My lords,” he said, “please turn aside to your servant’s house. You can wash your feet and spend the night and then go on your way early in the morning.” “No,” they answered, “we will spend the night in the square.” But he insisted so strongly that they did go with him and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking bread without yeast, and they ate.

      Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom both young and old– surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.” Lot went outside to meet them and shut the door behind him and said, “No, my friends. Don’t do this wicked thing. Look, I have two daughters who have never slept with a man. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do what you like with them. But don’t do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.” “Get out of our way,” they replied. And they said, “This fellow came here as an alien, and now he wants to play the judge! We’ll treat you worse than them.” They kept bringing pressure on Lot and moved forward to break down the door. But the men inside reached out and pulled Lot back into the house and shut the door. Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door. The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here–sons-in- law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.” (NIV)

      There are several major holes in the theory that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of homosexuality. First, The idea that “all” the men of Sodom were gay is ridiculous. For one thing, Lot’s daughters were pledged to be married to men of Sodom. Second, if all the men were homosexuals, why did Lot offer his daughters to appease them? What good would it do to offer a gay man a woman to have sex with? Finally, these people threatened Lot. If he didn’t comply with their wishes they said they would do WORSE to him that to the two visitors. They were also trying to force the door down. They were obviously violent and they were trying to get at two unwilling guests. Whenever you mix sex with violence against an unwilling person you do not have homosexuality, you have RAPE.

      There is another story in the Bible in which the same thing happened:

      . Judges 19:13-27

      He added, “Come, let’s try to reach Gibeah or Ramah and spend the night in one of those places.” So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin. There they stopped to spend the night. They went and sat in the city square, but no one took them into his home for the night. That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was living in Gibeah (the men of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?” He answered, “We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the LORD. No one has taken me into his house. We have both straw and fodder for our donkeys and bread and wine for ourselves your servants– me, your maidservant, and the young man with us. We don’t need anything.” “You are welcome at my house,” the old man said. “Let me supply whatever you need. Only don’t spend the night in the square.” So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink.

      While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.” The owner of the house went outside and said to them, “No, my friends, don’t be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don’t do this disgraceful thing. Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don’t do such a disgraceful thing.” But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. (NIV)

      Notice the similarity in the stories. Compare Genesis 19:4,5 with Judges 19:22.

      Genesis 19:4,5

      Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom– both young and old– surrounded the house. They called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.”

      Judges 19:22

      While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him.”

      In the account in Judges the wicked men were appeased with the female concubine. This proves they were not homosexuals. They were after sex for power or rape. If you read further you’ll learn that the tribe of Benjamin was almost totally destroyed because of this incident. Neither the tribe of Benjamin nor the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were punished because of homosexuality. Both of these accounts clearly describe rape. What the men of Sodom were going to do to the angels in Genesis was what the men of Gibeah did to the traveler’s concubine in Judges.

      Why were Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed? What were the grievous sins that God judged them worthy of such destruction? What was the great outcry God was referring to in Genesis chapter 18? We don’t need to wonder. The Bible tells us exactly why these cities were destroyed.

      Ezekiel 16:48-50

      As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done. “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen. (NIV)

      Ezekiel Chapter 16 is an allegory God used to compare unfaithful Jerusalem to an adulterous wife for committing religious adultery. As you can see God listed the sins of Sodom. No homosexuality is listed there. Those detestable or abominable acts mentioned refereed to the religious rituals popular in that time. We will cover these in the section on false gods.

      Deuteronomy 29:22-26

      Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it. The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur– nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger.

      All the nations will ask: “Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?” And the answer will be: “It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. (NIV)

      Moses was about to die and he predicted the scattering of Israel and the destruction of the land like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This destruction of Israel was not prophesied because of homosexuality but because of religious infidelity. This is quite in line with the context of the entire Bible. Of course God promises their restoration in Deuteronomy chapter 30. This complete restoration is about to happen in the end times, but that is another study.

      Amos 4:11

      “I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. (NIV)

      If you read the book of Amos you find that God promises to overthrow Israel as He overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah for three things: turning away from God which is religious unfaithfulness, being evil to the poor and living selfishly. Homosexuality is not even addressed.

      Jeremiah 23:13,14

      “Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing: They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.” (NIV)

      Here is yet another comparison of the promised judgment of Israel to the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah. Once again the theme is religious unfaithfulness, not homosexuality.

      Matthew 10:11-15

      “Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. As you enter the home, give it your greeting. If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. (NIV)

      Here, Jesus Christ compares the sin of Sodom to the sin of faithlessness in people who reject the Gospel and inhospitality.

      Matthew 11:20-24

      Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.” (NIV)

      Here the Lord again makes reference to Sodom’s destruction as he talks about unrepentant cities that refuse to believe in him or his miracles. This is about religious unfaithfulness and unbelief, not homosexuality.

      If you don’t know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you can know him right now. Don’t be guilty of not believing in Him. Here is what Jesus himself said:

      John 3:16-18

      “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. (NIV)

      Notice that Jesus said WHOEVER believes in him shall have eternal life. The condemnation is reserved for WHOEVER does not believe in Him. He made no mention of homosexuals in this passage.

      If you recognize that you are a sinner and need Jesus to be the Lord of your life then it is a very simple process. Ask God to forgive you of whatever has separated you from Him. That is what sin is. When you ask Him that he will forgive you:

      I John 1:9-10

      If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives. (NIV)

      According to Romans 10:9,10 all you have to do is:

      …confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (NIV)

      At the end of this article is a simple sample prayer that you can pray. There is also some other information you will want if it is your desire to receive Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior.

      If you have known Jesus as your Lord and Savior but felt you had to walk away because you are gay, come back to Him. He has never left you. Repent of whatever you have done to hurt yourself, others and God. He is just waiting for you with open arms. He understands it was all a misunderstanding. His love never fails.

        I am concerned about your effort to explain away God’s judgment upon people in the Old Testament for their homosexual behaviour and then avoid entirely the New Testament prohibitions against this abomination.

        The people God punished in the old Testament for homosexuality were also guilty of other sins. Nobody denies this. In some cases these other sins were sins of omission such as their lack of hospitatlity. Many people were guilty of other sins and not showing hospitality and were not directly punished by God. It was homosexuality that was the CROWNING sin – the “abomination” – that brought God’s wrath down in Genesis 19.

        In the New Testament it is clear that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrha because of their “fornication” which comes from a Greek word meaning “illicate sex” and includes homosexuality.
        It specifies that it was “fornication” with “strange flesh”.

        “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” (Jude vs.7).

        It appears that the men of Sodom would have raped the angelical visitors that night. However, homosexuality was the sin that brought their destruction – the homosexuality they had been practicing among themselves for a long time – not merely what happened that particular night. The law God later gave Moses (Leviticus 18:22) forbid homosexuality not only homosexual rape.

        It is true, in the New Testament the lord Jesus said it would be better in the day of judgment for Sodom and Gomorrha than for some of the cities and regions of His day where the people had actually had the opportunity to hear Him or His apostles preach and see the mighty works they had done. The Bible shows that there are degrees of punishment. The greater punishment is reserved for those who have had the greatest opportunity to be saved! Other people (those in Christ’s day who had personally heard Him preach) had not sunk to the same depth of depravity as those of Sodom and Gomorrha. But “…there is no difference. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:22,23) “… God… now commandeth ALL men every where to repent.” (Acts 17:30)

        The prohibitions and warnings God has given us in the New Testament against homosexuality cannot be overlooked.

    alright then, it’s the begining of the end. why do gays need special protection. they are not discriminated against any more than the average person out there. i have never heard of someone in the caribbean not getting a job because they are gay, or not being allowed in a club because they are gay…. i see gays in the caibbean with the best jobs, flambouyant males are teachers, library workers,police officers etc

    Wow. These really are the last days. I personally do not support homosexuality, but I too am a sinner guilty of my own sins and the final judgment will be given by GOD and not man. Violence against a fellow human fr whatever reason is wrong, just as you would condemn a murderer for killing so too should you condemn a person for resulting to violent acts against a gay individual to satisfy their own personal belief on the matter. There are movements against domestic violence, violence against women and the likes, so why not the ones whose sexuality do not adhere to the “norm”? I don’t believe that anyone should be discriminated against or violently treated because they are gay, however, they should keep in mind that though society and these laws makes it easier for them to go public and be comfortable with their “lifestyle” that there is a supreme being who is looking down an by HIS hands they will surely be judged and condemned like all sinners.

    Signing this statement only makes sense if we are ready to repeal any existing laws that make homosexual acts illegal. How else could we sign an agreement that calls for and end to acts of “criminal sanctions”? I’m totally against prejudice or acts of violence against people that have a sexual preferrences that differ from mine. However, that does not mean that I have to condone those practices.     We the Dominica Muslim Community and the muslim community of believers strongly abhor and deemed illegical under Islamic law the support of homosexuality and homosexuals.

    I tried calling Matt this morning however I couldn’t get through.

    This claim that the declaration refers to violence against homosexuals and lesbians, these people have a greater goal. They are paving the way for homosexuality to be legalized in every country in the world.

    My appeal to the Dominican people, christianity is not the answer. It does not have practical laws to deal with homosexuality. Only Islam deals with homosexuals based on divine law.

    I am feeling a scene of great satisfaction and openness of this issue. Those responsible for representing Dominica I applaud you for your understanding , vision and foresight in this matter.Because at the end of the day people will always be people regardless of your life route. Further , this shows that the government is serious about fight crime and bringing peace and tranquility to all who live in our beloved island. Leaving all Judgement for God whenever he decides to do that, don’t you think that your fellow human beings should be protected from all levels of victimisation and discrimination? Would you be happy if your brother, sister or other family member was gay and they would be constantly harassed and beaten and for the government to provide no protection for them? Like the others have said at the end of the day they’re human beings, and they should be protected. If you’re against people being gay that’s up to you, but don’t be against them being protected.     It says at the bottom of the article that Dominica did , in fact sign the agreement. I hope this is so. We are INSTRUCTED, COMMANDED by the Almighty to love our neighbor as ourself . He does not give us any excuse to get out of that. If we wish to see his face we are to recognize that He created us all in His image. The fact that some people carry out acts distasteful to us and to Him is up to the Lord Himself to judge … not us. That is not our job … our job is simply to love one another as He has loved us. The the human rights we have had to fight for as black people cannot now be denied to others because of their sexual orientation.
