British PM at odds with university over admissions of Caribbean students

Cameron

LONDON, England — One of the world’s leading universities is in a row with British Prime Minister David Cameron over the admissions of black Caribbean students.

Oxford University has described as “incorrect and highly misleading” figures quoted by Cameron on the number of black students admitted to the prestigious institution.

CMC reported that the prime minister said, “I saw figures that only one black person went to Oxford last year,” adding, “I think it is disgraceful… we have to do better than that.”

But an Oxford spokeswoman said that the number of UK undergraduates of Caribbean black origin is 26 and there are 14 mixed students as well.

She added that 22 percent of students at Oxford are from the ethnic minority and described the prime minister’s statement as “unfortunate”.

I always say there is no smoke without fire. Remember Harvard in the U.S. ? There was a time that blacks were not allowed to study there.
I do think that there is still a certain degree of prejudice against blacks in England, no exception in the US and elsewhere.

firstly i know for a fact that cameron could care less about if we enter oxford and cambridge. there is a poll coming in may and he is desperately trying to boost his status with his antics.

now on that article, it is sad that this is going on. obviously oxford and cambridge seem to both be racist institutions and i for one would not like to go somewhere and live there for three-six years to be looked down upon. if they do not want me i do not want to be forced into going.

going to any other university gives the same degree, just not the same status. yes you have to work harder to get to the destination but that is the story of us proud black people life. so let us allow oxford and cambridge to carry on with their racist antics and get on with our lives, become successful nevertheless and show them that we don not need them as a people. at the end of the day, karma is a b&*%&. and no i am not racist. just a fact stater

That’s shocking but most students these days prefer travel tot he U.S. just because of the strength of the pound and without scholarships being provided to the U.K as opposed to other countries then CAribbean students are left to migrate to the more appeling detinations, but I do agree that this is appuling and needs attention

I’m sure when this article is talking about Caribbean students and students of Caribbean “origin” they are referring to British born black people of Caribbean parents therefore the comment about Caribbean students left to migrate is not relevant.

      How many Apply?
How many can afford the tuition (in POUNDS) in the absence of a scholarship?
Ask those questions before your condemnation
And stop blaming everything on race just because a certain race is not available in significant numbers everybody ready to cry racism however when you hear about all black colleges and universities not a whimper is brought out (and I am of African Decent), If you apply with the credentials and don’t get in then you have a case but get all the facts first

waw…they can afford the same way their own kids can afford..wat u think nah? there are caribbean students who arnt international students and who pay the same fee as the british nationals..this isnt america..its much easier to go to university in the UK the fees are not problem when you have student loans and grants…so dont get it confused.
