China considers taking cat and dog off the menu

A draft law that would see dog and cat taken off restaurant menus in China is causing fierce debate between animal welfare groups and defenders of traditional values – and highlighting the huge divide between rich and poor.

For the Chinese, eating dog and cat meat is an age-old tradition which, in the 21st-century, sets the country apart from much of the rest of the world. Cat may have waned as a food choice in popularity in recent years, but dog meat is still commonly available throughout China, particularly in the north.

Well, I welcome my chinese friends, Eat as much as you want. Eventually we may not have any loose ones around especially in the City. Help us clean the streets. Just that the chinese populartion is too small to combat our growing problem of stray dogs. I personnally thinks we ourselves should start develope an apetite for Stew, Bar B Q, Roost, Fried, Cooked , Baked Dog etc . And did you know some of us eat Bats in Dominica? A Dominican Menu
    Manicou ( hi breed rats)
    Smoke Cat (Puss)
    Rabbit
    Agouti
    Mountain Chicken (Frog or krapo)
    Viyo (river snails)
    Bats
    Iguana (Lizards)
    Crabs
    Guinea pigs (wardines)
    and
Snake Oil (Lwil tete chien) to fry them all

The anti animal cruelty law is an “expert advisory draft” from China Academy of Social Science and Law, and must be reviewed by the legislative body. How much of it will become legislative propposal remains to be seen.

Also, it does not ban dog/cat meat consumption, only regulation for humane treatment and sanitation for consumer. The academy did consider regional culture and tradition when drafting this proposal.

BTW, if some Hindus think cows are God, should we not eat beef? Dog and cat are considered food animal in many culture around the world. Rabbit is pet in our society, yet we eat rabbits. If intelligence is the criteria pigs are smarter than cat, but pork chops are okay?

Every country in the world have certain foods that may be foreign to us. Some places eat Lamb Brains, cockroaches, animal balls so on. To me dog and cat are nothing compared to these. Look at us we eat frog, (well i dont eat it) but i mean thats our national dish, people from other places might find it disgusting that we eat from. My point is that eveyone has their different culture and traditions. who are we to tell them dont cook this and dont eat this.

In Dominica we need to be more broad minded. We need to open our minds to ideas, to appreciate a different point of view. We will only see the complete sculpture of knowledge in its entirety if we look at it from different angles. Then we would really be taking ourselves to the next level.

There are people who would consider what Dominicans eat to be ‘strange’. All the frogs, crabs, manicu (a rodent: a rat), cat, lazar, agouti, titiwi, snails, snake oil, blood(black pudding) etc. We eat these things because our state of mind have been conditioned from birth to accept these creatures as food. The same thing applies to religious belief and other aspects of culture. That’s is why it is good to travel and experience the diversity of human culture. It teaches one about human nature.

If you don’t eat what your environment provides you die. There are a billion Chinese people in china, do I need to go on and make any deductions from that fact? No, I will leave it to the imagination.

So what’s the big deal about eating a dog? Any answers?

I for one think they should keep their tradition. Look at our National dish, when i’m away from home people don’t believe we eat “Mountain chicken”

I could never understand why Dominicans make fun of Asians for eating dogs and cats when we eat Crapaud, Manicou and Agouti. FROGS, OPOSSUMS AND RATS!

Now I know why there are no longer any problems with stray dogs in the city. I guess the chinese restaurants are taking good care of that. We better be careful what meat we eat when we go to those places eh. I myself keeping my pet dog fluffy well tied down eh.
