Agriculture minister, Matthew Walter, is to represent Dominica at a meeting between US Vice President Joe Biden and regional leaders in Trinidad and Tobago on Tuesday.

The meeting has been described by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit as ‘important’ as the US and the Caribbean continue dialogue on relations between them.

“We believe it is an important meeting, an important encounter at the political level,” he said. “This is something we have always told the US, being in touch on the political level so that we can look at issues affecting the relationship between the US and CARICOM.”

He said the meeting serves as a precursor to a meeting with President of the US, Barack Obama, which is yet to be scheduled.

Biden arrived in Trinidad on Monday.

Leaders from across CARICOM and the Dominican Republic are currently in the twin-island state for the meeting and talks will focus on matters such as regional security, trade, human and social development and energy.

Biden is expected to leave Trinidad after the meeting on Tuesday, just a few days before Chinese President Xi Jinping, is expected to make the first visit to the Caribbean by a Chinese leader.

DNO, I don’t think that we have real Dominicans commenting on this site, for someone to advise Ross University to leave the island is not from a Dominican. We have alot of jealous nationalities on this site poisoning the minds of our nations people towards our leaders and other alike.

We can’t even do the jobs that theses guys can do , yet still we continue to curse, bad talk and wish bad on this blessed country of mines.

He’s not good to represent the Government as “Minister of Agriculture; so why then was he picked to head this office? all you have jokes papa. Also, America knows all those who are dining and wining with dictators, and would not have acknowledged the PM at that meeting. Therefore, the PM is avoiding all embarrassments. He maybe is afraid to eat food and drink water at such meetings…hehehehehehe he hiding boy..lol. The race for the Islands is toughening between China and America. We must choose the lesser evils. I say go with the USA. But i’m waiting to see how close this Minister of Agriculture will get to Biden.

According to DNO and I quote “The meeting has been described by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit as ‘important’ as the US and the Caribbean continue dialogue on relations between them.” But yet still he sends the minister of Agriculture, not even the Minister of foreign affairs could go and represent us. Lord help us?
DNO newsonline went on to say, “Leaders from across CARICOM and the Dominican Republic are currently in the twin-island state for the meeting and talks will focus on matters such as regional security, trade, human and social development and energy”. So my question is why did the PM send the minister of Agriculture? If I can take a cue from who is representing DOMINICA, we have not taken this meeting seriously and this Skerrit led DLP government continues to snob the Americans. Does Dominica expected to benefit from that meeting or any subsequent meeting to follow? I am afraid the answer is NO.
Our actions are being watched very closely by the US Government and this is why the citizens of this country are being treated the way we are at the US Embassy in Bridgetown, Barbados when we apply for non-immigrant visa.
Well we cannot get monies under the table nor make doggy deals with non-bona fide businessmen. If there is nothing personal in it for us we don’t bother to attend.
Are we the only country which sends a minister that his portfolio is not even an item on the agenda?
I am sure that the PM will go to Trinidad when the Chinese President Xi Jinping, visits there.

Exactly, so why send our Minister of Agriculture. Roosevelt Skerrit too high to meet with V.P. of the U.S.A.? They must be shaking their heads in Washington.

      @ John Paul:

As long as one has prepared thoroughly for a meeting there should be no difficulty in aptly representing the good PM. Also, if a statement such as the one which you indicated was made by the Minister was so stated in honesty what is the issue with that? Also, what exactly does that have to do with representing the PM? You need to contribute more wholesomely and sensibly to this discussion.

As it concerns a man’s decison to quit active politics the same can be hinged on a variety of issues none of which I am sure is a lack of desire to serve his people whom he has been representing for more than 15 years. Once again I submit that you need to be more appropriately informed prior to contributing to this discussion.

      • lol
        May 28, 2013

I too believe that you need to be appropriately informed of what is happening in present day Dominica. This Minister of Agriculture has been there for the past what 15 years, and under his supervision, agriculture has died and buried. There is practically no more agriculture in Dominica, he has a lack of foresight, no vision, no sense of innovation to revive this industry and for my part should have been fired long days much less to be representing us now at any major meeting.

Just talk and no action.I see Joe Biden as a big joker.
Just a question, what monetary assistants has the Caribbean Islands received from the U.S.since the accession of Obama as president.I know we blacks love the Democratic Party.
I can remember Rosie Douglas boasting about going to the U.S.to campaign for Bill Clinton in his first term for president. When he became president Clinton destroyed our banana industry. We all can remember there was a preferential treatment for A.C.P. bananas.Clinton took the European Countries to court (WTO) and effectively dismantled the little preference we had.

In light of how important this meeting seems to be, as for as the PM articulated, and knowing the capabilities or lack thereof, of the Agriculture minister, I’m just thinking should, some one more capable be representing us at that meeting….. but then again who?… I guess the saying “ IF NOT SKERRIT THEN WHO” is quite appropriate in that circumstance. hehehehe

    May 28, 2013

Once again we see Skerrit Labor Government attitude towards the U.S. Government. An important meeting involving the Vice President of the U.S, he not being present, in my opinion he has snubbed Mr. Biden and the U.S. Government by staying home.I wonder had the Presidents of Cuba, China or Venezula meeting in Trinidad, would he stay in Dominica. If I was in Skerrit’s place, I would be the first Prime Minister to meet Mr. Biden, in order to seek assistance from his good offices in terms of Dominica’s relationship with Carnival.

PM forgets that we have relationships with cuba amongst other un desirable states and he also forgets what he as said concerning the west and our links with ALBA who thretened to join Argentina in a war against the UK,this is act of a desparate man who will sleep in any warm bed as long as he gets paid, this is just a lack of vision,a lack of backbone and a lack of integrity.By the way what is our foriegn policy…………shake hands and beg from everyone and anyone.
