Driver claims ‘sexting’ led to crash

NEW PORT RICHEY, Florida— At first, he told sheriff’s deputies the minor accident was another driver’s fault. Later he admitted to “sexting” while driving. Ultimately deputies decided Phernando Cuello of Tampa was drunk and took him to jail.

According to a Pasco County Sheriff’s Office report, a deputy found Cuello after another person flagged her down and told her about the accident just before 3 a.m. Sunday. Cuello, 29, of 3923 Pine Limb Court, first told the deputy that someone “cut him off” on State Road 54. Then he said he was exchanging steamy text messages with his girlfriend.

A deputy noted the driver’s strong smell of alcohol, glassy eyes and slurred speech and gave Cuello a sobriety test, on which he performed poorly, the report said. Cuello then refused a breath test.

He was charged with driving under the influence and released without having to post bail.
