It’s not just Cambridge University – all of Britain benefited from slavery

Cambridge University has announced that it will finally – just two centuries after the abolition of slavery and about 80 years after the end of the British empire – conduct an “in-depth academic study into ways in which it contributed to, benefited from or challenged the Atlantic slave trade and other forms of coerced labour during the colonial era”.

I’m not sure “in-depth” is how I would describe an inquiry which omits all 31 of its colleges, which hold most of the wealth in Cambridge, and some of which already have verified slavery connections. And it is worth pointing out that, while Cambridge has framed this inquiry as part of its “race equality initiatives”, this conversation was forced on it by students, activists and brave academics.

But Oxbridge institutions are not alone in owing a tremendous debt to slaves. The Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership at UCL has created a vast database that shows just how profoundly slavery shaped modern Britain – well beyond its two best-known universities….

DNO, when you reject God’s word you automatically bring curses on yourself, children and your country so it’s your choice.

Slavery is very much alive and well even this day. And I mean all over the globe.
Just take South Africa look at what they are going through under their own black bothers who were all in the same struggle under the whites and I know they will blame the whites from now and until the messiah returns. But black or white give them the opportunity and they both will do the same thing. The BIBLE spoke of slavery( which it called bond servant ) and JEHOVAH gave clear instructions as to how it must function and neither what went down in the past nor what’s taking place now can come close to GOD’s instructions on that matter.Slavery of the past and modern day slavery both falls under the umbrella of sin and only when the messiah returns that ugliness will find its rightful place where it belong…in hell…

    Senor Cristobal Colombus,
it appears you missed the mark completely with your comments on pre-colonial versus post-colonial slavery. I don’t know about you, but I certainly fully appreciate and respect our ancestors for enduring the brutality of the Trans-Atlantic slavery period and would never minimize their horrid life experiences in captivity.

Though I understand your apparent frustration with the continuing failure of descendants of slaves to govern and lead independent nations effectively in the post-colonial era, we must guard our emotions to ensure that we keep historical facts in their proper context and perspective. That being said; however, I have no contention with you or anyone who believes that the descendants of slaves are currently still in a state of captivity.

It is time we start making more forceful demands at all the international organizations that Black People are part of for our rightful preparations. The whole of Europe benefited from slavery if one has to go through the books.
Black people were the first on earth and shall always be here. So many times they have tried to wipe us out , but here were like shining stars.

Yes. Agreed. But that Plantation Economy/ metropole-hinterland relationship has left us constantly dependent on them and that is why they are rejecting the notion of reparation. Everything we had, they took, develop themselves and sold back to us. That is why when I hear persons speak on the export of primary products, I get troubled because it is no different from back then, only now we are doing so willingly. We follow their regulations as being part of their organization and of course, I understand the importance of globalization but have we realized that the former colonies are the ones looked down on for breaking regulations while not a glance goes towards the former metropoles. They continue to benefit from us. We need to take a stand as black people, not to bring down these other countries but to build ourselves to the race that we once were. Claim our rights and Empower ourselves.

But what is the difference between slavery back then and the modern day slavery involving our government and those Haitians? I see a lot of the principles of slavery in DOMINICA today, as Roosevelt Skerrit to me, is the modern day slavery master and those he has empoverished have become his slaves. Maybe the only difference is back then slave masters were White folks verses today a son of black slaves enslaving black people
