Man wins dumpling eating contest, then dies

KIEV (Reuters) – A 77-year-old Ukrainian man won a jar full of sour cream for coming first in a dumpling eating contest and then promptly died, local media reported on Wednesday.

Ivan Mendel ate 10 dumplings in half a minute to win first place and a one-liter jar of sour cream in the contest held in the town of Tokmak in the southeastern Zaporizhya region on September 18, Fakty I Kommentarii newspaper said.

Shortly afterwards, Mendel became unwell and died, according to local news websites.

Dumplings, called “vareniki” in the former Soviet republic, are a staple of Ukrainian cuisine and are often stuffed with a range of fillings from mushrooms to cherries.

This just an example of the emptiness human beings exist with in this world, the reason they are always searching for fulfillment.

Unfortunately, they do not obey their instincts, which often comes from conscience, and prompting them to do something meaningful with their time–or walking the path to find gainfulfulfillment.

What is the joy of competing to eat dumplings to win a jar of sour cream, for example? Where is the fulfillment when one dies from this senseless activity?

It is true that this man lived to be 77 years old, but his way of dying does not convey much ambition in him, while he lived so many years, does it!

What brings joy for one man, won’t be the same for every other.

So a man enjoyed eating competitively, and ended up dying after doing so. Regardless of what books and films and fiction may have you believe, death is not always glorious or graceful.

Who are you to judge a persons entire life and ambition simply by the way he died? People die in strange, surprising and to some, ridiculous ways every day. You are labeling 77 years of life by one tragic occurrence that, unfortunately, resulted in death. Contrary to what you may believe, that does NOT make him an ’empty human being’ as you put it. On this page, the only example standing testament to the emptiness of human beings is your comment.

It’s unfortunate that you would so readily abuse the memory of a dead man, especially with a reference to Jesus in your name. Judge not lest ye be judged. If Jesus was real, he would be incredibly unhappy with someone who claims to be his subject making such remarks.

Is this all the prize is comprised of, a jar full of sour cream? It was not worth dying for. At his age, 77 years old it was too much for him to stamina. Those dumplings must have been large ones like bakes or larger; not the small dumpling that Dominicans and other West Indians make.
There are different types of mushrooms, some are edible and some are poisonous. I hope he was not given the poisonous ones. People must comprehend that there are things they can do and cannot do at a certain age. Were it not for that type of competition he could have been alive. I hope that God had mercy on his soul.
Only last weekend I was thinking of making some dumplings with red beans, etc.; was too busy for this. Probably this weekend.
