Dominica and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have established formal diplomatic relations during a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations on February 6, 2024. A joint communique to formalize the relations was signed by Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Philbert Aaron, and his Pakistani counterpart, Munir Akram.
A press statement from the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations said Aaron thanked the Pakistani Mission for hosting the ceremony.
“He said the formalization of bilateral ties would open up avenues of cooperation, especially in the fields of sports and climate change,” the statement said.
“Ambassador Aaron said that given the challenges of climate change, the future will be massively impacted, which in turn warranted close cooperation.”

“He expressed his appreciation for the government and the people of Pakistan, and expressed the hope of working closely with Pakistan bilaterally as well as at the multilateral forums to promote understanding and mutual interests,” the press statement noted.
Meanwhile, in addressing the ceremony, Pakistan’s ambassador said that despite the vast geographical zone that separates the two countries, both Dominica and Pakistan were bound by the love of cricket.
“He recalled how the West Indies produced cricketing heroes who dominated the game and were a household name in Pakistan,” the press statement noted.
“Ambassador Akram said both the countries were also vulnerable to climate change which emerged as a shared global challenge. He said that despite hardly significant contribution to climate change, Pakistan was ranked among the top ten countries affected by climate change. He emphasized the need for building resilience to fight climate change.”
He also said that the establishment of ties between the two countries would “ensure substantive, cooperative relationship.”
The ceremony was preceded by a bilateral meeting between the two Permanent Representatives.
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is located in South Asia and is the fifth-most populous country in the world with a population of over 241.5 million. It became an independent state on August 14, 1947, as a result of the division of former British India. It has an agricultural economy with wheat, cotton, rice, millet, and sugar cane being the major crops.
Among fruits: mangos, oranges, bananas, and apples are grown in abundance in different parts of the country.
The main natural resources are natural gas, coal, salt, and iron. The country has an expanding industry. Cotton, textiles, sugar, cement, and chemicals play an important role in its economy.
