H.E. Moshe Sermoneta is Israel’s new Ambassador to Dominica. The Ambassador presented his letters of credentials to Dominica’s head of state H.E. Dr Nicholas Liverpool on Wednesday.
“Throughout the years, Dominica and Israel have maintained friendly relations that were reflected principally in Israel’s commitment to the development of Dominica. This was done through technical assistance extended either directly by the Centre of International Cooperation of the Israeli Foreign Ministry or in cooperation with CARICOM and the OAS’s Young Americas Youth Business Trust (YABT),” President of Dominica H.E. Dr Nicholas Liverpool said in welcoming the new ambassador to Dominica
“As recently was last month, for example, Israeli experts participated in a YABT Rural Tourism Business Lab that took place here in Dominica. In the same vein, we are now coordinating a visit of an agricultural expert to the country with a view to expanding our development assistance activity on the ground in accordance with the priorities of the Government of Dominica.”
He is confident that there will be continued cordial relations between Dominica and Israel.
“I have no doubt that you will continue the work of your predecessors in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation which already exist between our two countries and will explore new and better means to improve and deepen bilateral cooperation as we strive for the development of our people,” he said.
The President continued, “Dominica has not been able to take full advantage of the numerous training courses offered by your country because of the high cost of air travel. It is Dominica’s wish to discuss with your country the possibility of fully funding a few of the courses, in order to encourage broader participation, and also to explore opportunities in areas such as energy, food security, health and education, which could form part of a technical cooperation agreement between our two countries. Our cooperation with your country in the regional and international arena can be counted upon and we look forward to providing continued support for the candidacy of the State of Israel on various international bodies in appropriate circumstances.”

I think some folks misconstrued the basis of my original post; somehow some have gathered that my post was a critique of Jews and/or the state of Israel as a whole. Far from it.
I totally support the state of Israel; I do n ot however, support of some of their political and militaristic policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians. As someone whose forefathers were victims of the slave trade and all the systemic ills that resulted there-from, I certainly empathize with the Jews. However, let’s face it, some of their policies are downright wrong, bordering on criminal, in their dealings with the Palestinians. Some may argue that the Palestinians look for it, that some of the things they do – like Hamas’ call for the destruction of and eradication of the Jews – amounts to self-inflicted wounds, and I would agree, but that doesn’t mean you should treat all of them the same. Yes it may be difficult to determine friend from foe, but when you start off from a position that all are foes, what you sow is what you reap. I will never agree with Hamas’ current political objectives; their humanitarian objectives on the other hand, appears worthy of support.

Behind the scenes one must keep their eyes on the United Nations…you see folks, next month the Palestinians intend to table a resolution in the UN seeking global recognition for a Palestinian state. The resolution is guaranteed to pass at this point, but Israel and the US are engaging in a determined effort to persuade “third world” countries not to vote for it. This, I suspect, is the logic behind Israel’s suddenly overt foreign affairs reach outs. It’s more like a reach-around (those familiar with American slang would know what that means). Since when did Israel care anything about diplomatic relations with anyone else but the US? and to a lesser extent Europe and Canada? mush less small islands like Dominica? how about never.
I think you just hit the nail directly on the head with a clear precise blow. I was wondering myself how come all of a sudden we were establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel. Especially with Dominican leaders being so vocal in their support of Ghaddafi’s regime when the entire rest of the world is condemning it.
But the upcoming UN vote for the establishment of a Palestinian state is an extremely hot button issue which the Israelis are fighting tooth and nail to prevent from happening. Just last week they offered to resume peace talks in an attempt to dissuade the Palestinians from going forward with the vote.
Ofcourse it doesn’t help their cause that just a few days after that offer they resumed building settlements in East Jerusalem.
Guess we’ll just have to see what happens.
