COMMENTARY: Obama shifts the political ground once more

Obama

The American presidency is often described as a “bully pulpit” used to advance new ideas and initiatives, new ways of doing things as well as to support old traditions and worthy practices.

In encouraging his fellow Americans to support the Second World War, Franklin Delano Roosevelt described four freedoms — freedom of speech and worship and freedom from want and fear — as ideals worth fighting for in Europe and for helping downtrodden people at home. In his inaugural address, John Kennedy said that a torch had been passed to a new generation of Americans who were “unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this nation has always been committed…”

I find it amazing that time and time again we, as Catholics hear reports of pedophile priests who molest young boys, and the debates never get this heated, nor do people say I’m not going to a Catholic Church any more. It is my opinion that the Cardinals, Bishops and Archbishops are usually silent when there are accusations that a child was molested by a priest, yet, they are always ready to jump on the band wagon when the debate involves gays and gay marriage. All they do is shuffle the priests around like a deck of cards from one parish to another. Talk about hypocrisy!

One comment on the Jamaican Observer website reads, “the missionaries did a very good job on us” and I concur.

In my dealings with the Bible and religion I’ve come to believe this: God (represented on Earth by Jesus) wants us to love each other regardless of our differences. There are countless stories about Jesus accepting and welcoming people who had been casted out and discriminated against by the rest of society. So why now do we want to do the same to gays?

I no longer subscribe to any religion and I’m a heterosexual man, but it pains me to see the things we do to exclude fellow human beings just because they’re different. If getting married will make a gay couple happy, why are so many of us working so hard keep them unhappy? We have more important things to worry about.

You can love someone and not agree with what they say or do. When Jesus “hung” out with people it was to restore them unto God. To clean them from sins and change them toward God, but He did this in LOVE not hate.

      @ My2Sense
I concur with your views in its entirety. In my opinion, this is what each person should ask him/her self: if a gay couple gets married, will that affect, impact or alter my life in any way? It will not change anything that I do, so I’m not bothered by it. Most of us think its a big sin; ok, so is adultery, murder, theft, envy, etc. We all will have to give an account of our lives to God, and I say its between them and their God. Who are we to judge? 8)

You think when you go to the pearly gates they will ask if your read the bible before they decide to let you into Paradise or not? You can read the bible a thousand times but you will be judged on what you do.

I stop my campaigning, Mr. Obama has really dealt a blow to my support for him, I’m no longer a supporter for his reelection, and my object right now is to get him out of the White House…cause he has no morals, and he doesn’t really know what he actually stand for anymore? My issue right now is let’s keep the in private, and focus on who can turn this world economy around at this point. My Obama can no longer lead!

Are you Catholic? If so, have you stopped attending “Mass” because of all the scandals involving priests molesting young boys and robbing them of their innocense? President Obama never said that he was going to draft legislation to allow gay marriage. He simply said that he supports it. Juxtapose that with what Catholic priests are accused of. They commit heinous acts against helpless and innocent children.

“Im is somebody Pickney too!” Yes we are all equal in the eyes of the Almighty, we must learn to respect each other regardless of Race, Religion,Sexual orientation,Class, or what have you. The key is consenting adults this does not mean someone can bugger and get away with it. What married people do willingly behind closed doors is not anyones business but their own. Get over yourself Hater’s focus on the more important issues at hand.

Doing something behind close doors does not make it morally sound. It is true that one cannot spy or intrude on one’s privacy. All of us must die and give an account to Allah.

I support Obama and hope he wins the next election but I can not agree with him on this one. For me it is an axiom that marriage can only be contracted between a man and a woman. This has nothing to do with any Holy Scriptures either. If equal “rights” have to extended this far, then any union between any individuals, beyond the age of consent, should be legible for “marriage” status. Imagine my father has died, my mother is alone and beyond the age of child bearing. I, her son, love her and want to take care of her. Why shoul we not be allowed to legally marry also? or indeed, why not legalize polygamy through the expediency of “marriage”? And how about priests, who fall in love, gay or straight and want equal rights too under the law of the land. Is their church going to deny them? I fervently wish everyone happiness, whatever their sexual orientation and living arrangements,by all means afford them the same legal rights as traditional heterosexual couples, but same -sex marriage will always remain an impossibility for me.

Kudos to Obama for standing up for human rights. And shame upon the unthinking Dominicans who, in another article on here, made the strikingly foolish statement that they loved Obama but would vote Republican because of this. That has to be one of the most politically ridiculous things I’ve seen in a long time. Shame, too, on David Dixon, the person who commented on the article above (the linked version), since what he wrote is historically absurd. When a real scholar wants to talk about such things, we can talk.

A shameless and disgusting political ploy pandering to the gay vote.

Marriage is a function of our church and a sacred vow. How can any church support the perversion of what gays do? Anybody remember the sickening display by the two cruise ship passengers in public doing their thing in front of women and children?

Is this what Mr. Obama supports? I have news for you Mr. Obama, marriage is between a man and women.

      @ Done.

you wrote “how can any church support the perversion of what gays do?” What does the church say about pedophile priests? Do they support the perversion of what they do to these young boys? They took an oath to uphold and live up to the moral teachings of the Bible and the Church, didn’t they? This hypocrisy makes my blood boil.
