Split over Cuba could sink hemispheric summits

Could this weekend’s gathering of about 30 Western Hemisphere leaders be the last Summit of the Americas?

The question hung in the air as the leaders convened Sunday for a private morning retreat.

Washington, backed by Canada, was standing fast against widespread demands to include in the meeting’s final declaration language specifying that Cuba be included in future hemispheric summits.

Finally, the rest of the world is taking a positive stand in support of Cuba’s presence.

It’s about time, it’s more than 40 years now, what do you hope to achieve America by maintaining this evil blockade? Or are you afraid of the astute minds of the cuban people?

and thats y Barack will never win another election in the US. he has the perfect oportunity to shake hands and make up with Cuba. he IS the one to end this bitterness between US and Cuba, but instead he plays ” business as usual” bull……..too bad Barack…Still love u Mrs O.

Tell Fidel and Raul to allow free fair and open elections in their country.
I hope we not trying to use Obama as a scapegoat. So because he black u want him to heal de world in one election term? De tings world leaders were too scared to approach Bush with all u using to bring shame on de 1st Black President of de US?
What is Latin America position on the violence in Syria? Better yet what does China have to say?

I applaud u Barack for maintaining ur stance. Thinking of the Cuban people first before its leaders. Familyu can visit their loved ones and they can send money to them to. I love u Obama. Make us black people proud and don’t be a scapegoat.

Well your point disproves itself…. your point is “thats the reason Obama will not win another election”, well that would be true if the american public were overwhelmingly in favor of closer relations with Cuba, that is just not true, so Obama’s re-election is in no way related to his stance on Cuba, the cubans in Florida who are not voting for him now, would still not vote for him if he established relations with Cuba… and the trut is, you would not like to be living under a dictatorship, where you cant decide for yorself who your leader should be, so it is not an American Problem, it is a Cuban problem, when Cuba is ready for the rest of the world to accept it, it will become a democracy.

So what! If this is the last the thirty Western Hemisphere leaders meet in the Summit of the Americas. What have they accomplished in regards to the drug-trafficking in the region? What benefits have the less fortunate members gain from these show & tell Summits?
You would think that this would be a perfect forum to tackle, unemployment in the region, human trafficking, free trade with their neighbors, and all other pertinent issues to help wipe out poverty in the region. But no. Already, Agentina, Venezuela and Uruguay, let it be known that their Presidents will not sign a final declaration unless the US & Canada remove their veto of future Cuba’s participation. Big deal eh! The ideological divide that seems to stand in the way of progress when it comes to uniting the people of this Hemisphere, clearly demontrates that there’s a long way to go before we can achieve real progress. I say, to Hell with these Summits.

The dramatic support for political change particularly in Dominica. the Caribbean and Latin American countries, shows democracy is the model of governance the people are yearning for.Look who is talking about dictator. Why can’t Cubans vote? Are they not people too? “it’s like dictatorship.” Obama doesn’t give rat about communists who take pleasure in holding people in captivity.Morales and other extremists are not democrats but proclaiming democratic ideals to promote their political agenda.Obama will not be sold.
