An initiative intended to make Dominica “the best place to live, work and enjoy life” has been introduced to the media here in what has been described as a soft launch.
According to Joseph Isaac, the parliamentary representative for Roseau Central and one of the people behind the initiative, The Nature Island Investment Club (NIIC) was formed by Dominicans both at home and abroad who are seeking to create economic opportunities through investment projects within the productive sectors of Dominica, .
“We will be targeting in the first year three hundred people to move up to five hundred by the third year,” he said at a media briefing at the Prevo Cinemal on Tuesday 30th June 2015.
He said in the first year if they would get the 300 members, they would go to half a million dollars and by the third year they have the potential to reach approximately $4 million with a membership of 500.
Isaac said persons wishing to invest can do so by making a monthly payment of between $100 – $250 and no one will be “overpowering” or “controlling” but everyone will be equal.
“We don’t want to give the wrong message as it is a club strictly driven by investment and almost like a pure capitalistic type of club. It is a club with a social conscience and also the vision and the key driving force is an opportunity to come together as Dominicans to contribute to something within the productive sectors,” he said.
The Roseau Parl Rep, who is an executive member of the United Workers Party, is also insisting that the NIIC is not a political organization.
“It is not a political organization. I want you to be clear on that. The United Workers Party is just facilitating the process,” he said.
Meantime, Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Lennox Linton said the idea was born some time ago when it was discussed at length with their partners during their recent trip to New York and was crystalized over the last couple of weeks.
“This is an initiative that comes out of our vision to make Dominica the best place to live the best place to work and the best place to enjoy life,” he noted.
Senator Dr. Thomson Fontaine who also addressed the function is making an appeal to Dominicans all over the world to come on board.
“The club is looking for persons both at home and abroad who are interested in making a meaningful contribution to the country’s economic development,” he stated.
“As we know, in Dominica, currently the economy is not doing very well; there are not many employment opportunities for the young people; the economy is stagnating. So this, in a way, is our response to what is currently existing in Dominica to make an effort to bring much needed relief to the country.”
He continued, “So many times we depend on others to do it for us. We are saying that as individuals, we can join our efforts, our $100 every month, if we pull all of that together we can have a substantial fund that can be used to promote growth and projects on the island.”
Fontaine said they intend to create a “substantial” number of jobs based on the number of projects that they are able to generate.
He said the intention is to target projects in agriculture, agro-processing, the Essential Oils sector, small firms already in existence needing financial assistance, joint ventures and partnerships among others.
I think the investment club is a good idea.

2) An organization where members can meet, eat meals or stay over;

If would appear, Mr. Lennox Linton is the only politician Aaron has known all his life. Native born Dominicans have no opportunity to invest in the Citizenship by Investment projects and in principle I support this initiative, which will ensure that capital raised by Dominicans is issued for projects that benefit Dominicans, particularly in our own country.
I only hope that this institution will not be used as a bank of last resort, because the temptation- and pressure to do so will certainly be there. Secondly, whilst I welcome the support of the opposition for this initiative they should be fully removed from its operations and management, for obvious reasons.

The word club might provide a legal shield when as will happen, people contributing realize that some or most of the money foes to marketing, fund raising and board members expenses.

I have asked myself on many occasions, why doesn’t politicians unite for the good of the people. Since the announcement of the Investment Club, members of the DLP have gone on the political warpath. It has not even got off the ground, the kind of criticisms we have heard coming from the DLP would make your head spin. For instance, the trust worthiness of Fontaine, re the DAAS affair. The alleged spending in the US by Lennox in hotels. The failure of Isaac’s business in Portsmouth. The same DLP who criticized the UWP for not doing anything for the betterment of Dominicans, today, with new management, are on the verge of seeking physiological assistance because of this new initiative. Great job, UWP Team Dominica. I wonder if they really believed leadership is everything, or it was just a ploy to bring down Hon. Lennox Linton.
Any time it comes to financial institutions, it is only wise to look at the characters and past of the people heading them.

It is good that the Opposition is attempting something a little more positive for a change. It is things of this nature that the neutrals who decided the last election wanted to see for so long in the Opposition. They are trying to get people to believe that it is not a political club but whether it is or not is irrelevant to me. I believe they threw that out there for the reaction they are getting. Even so, seeing that most of them are opposition members of parliament I hope the Integrity Commission will call them up on that and have all the legal papers made public. I am having a problem in understanding how this investment company is going to be overseen, does this company has a watch dog and is it registered to do business on the island. because people comes up with all kinds of ways to pick-pocket poor people these days. For any investment company to work it has to start with it own capital as a deposit. don’t let them fool you.

So you want people of this beautiful country to believe your idea is to improve the country’s economy so you named it (THE NATURE ISLAND INVESTMENT CLUB) similar to THE NATIONAL INVESTMENT PROGRAM. Right? That is deceitful. Dominicans are much smarter than you are thinking. You are money hungry and will do anything to get.

You guys may have noble intentions but being fronted by three TOP MEMBERS OF THE UWP then how are you going to convince me and others that it is not political. I think you should front a mix of professionals – I also think that the ToR and objectives of the programme should be clearly articulatyed from day one; to what and how monies collected will be entrusted; is there going to be a board of governors, trustees? is it going to offer loans, grants and if will be seen as a financial institution? or is going to be operated like a SUB? what about transparency – and accountability? these are just a few questions for starters; once these are cleared I am ready to start. I have a couple projects up my sleeves that I am looking for partners to help develop.
At first glance the idea perked me up, but on further reading, my antennas went up. Here is my problem with this:
1. There are lot of people from the UWP involved. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, except it could take a political turn very quickly.
2. Because the UWP is facilitating this, it will be difficult to leave the politics out of it. There is a huge emphasis on job creation. I would like to invest in something that could ultimately benefit Dominica and Dominicans. But that is not the reason I invest my money. I invest to maximize my return. If as a result jobs are created, that is just the icing on the cake. If the business prospers and expansion is required and jobs are created as a result, great. But job creation is not my number one priority as an investor. When I hear that, what comes to mind is a place like Public Works Corporation where people are being paid to do nothing. That may not be the case, but they must promote the profit side (not job creation)

Where can we see concrete examples of the types of projects, can you make something accessible online for those living overseas? Who will be eligible ? Is this an open club available also to foreign Investors? Bring more details forward please..where is the legal backing..how do I know my $100 or $100,000 is safe ? Post a full report online or something..this could go a long long way..and I don’t think there is anything wrong in the Opposition taking the lead on a project in Dominica..We too politically charged in DA, and this may be the primary cause for the lagging economy..Remember an Idea is the single most powerful thing and it’s available to every single mind..If the opposition has a bright feasible idea then so be it..let it be known and supported..Dominica is for all of us..

Every time people ask you ungrateful Dominicans to contribute to development you say people are poor. Dominicans are not poor. It’s just poor management. Now you have a team of trustworthy, financial, accounting and economic experts to head this investment club. People are going to make triple times what they invest. Dr Fontaine is a financial genius that can turn dollar bills into gold.
Is this a pyramid scheme? Who benefits? I thought Dominicans are broke? The UWP says people broke, country broke where are the people getting the money? So Dominicans and the country not broke anymore? The little money to buy milk and sugar for their children UWP want it? The little money people get from the Red Clinic for which the UWP calls people beggars and greedy for and they want the begged money for their scheme? Next month, they will come back and ask for more money again. Didn’t UWP ask for money as they Rioted in Salisbury? How many times have they asked the poor people for money?

I like the Idea of pooling the resources but I’m sure it will help alot if people get a breakdown of a specific project these funds will go towards with projection of cost and returns on investment..or are we to understand that this will be a charitable kind of donation. If we put 100 thousand dollars into contract farming for the production of white potatoes for example, how many people will be employed over what period of time and the cost of labour, potato seeds etc, then eventually, the Market..how much money will this yield at the end of the period and then how will this money be redistributed among investors? Or will there be a bar on the ROI for 3 years for example to allow these monies to go back into the process of production..I hope at least a similar scenario was put forward at the presentation to woo and convince investors..try and keep this thing manageable, ‘because you don’t want a large group investing and making the ROI less attractive ’cause otherwise whats the…
I want to laugh so much, but I will take this seriously. ……………………………………………………………………………. However people are free to give their money to whoever they want. Laugh, because the UWP saying things are so hard, but they want to take the little money they have from people under hardship. Laugh because UWP is scheming, wheeling, dealing and conning so much out of office, I think they will put Skerritt to shame, since they claim Skerritt is scheming and dealing.
Anyway, this is a good test to see who people trust more. If Michael Astaphan, Judith Pestaina, McMillan Jno Baptiste put in a couple hundred thousand dollars in the hands of Thomson and Lennox, then it will be a good sign that Dominicans should follow.
