Retired public servant, Irene John, has been elected by her fellow councillors as the new Mayor of Roseau.
John was elected unopposed, at the first meeting of the Roseau City Council since elections were held on November 18.
Five government nominees joined the eight elected Councillors to complete the composition of the thirteen-man council which unanimously voted for John.
The government nominees are Ivan Soanes, Ericson Romain, Lucy Belle Matthew, Michael Moreau and Clemicia Thomas.
Besides John, the elected members are Kimara Hurtault, Vanessa Prevost, Albert Dalrymple, Corinthia Blanc, Reah Brumant, Regina Walsh and Daniel Lugay.
John will replace outgoing mayor Cecil Joseph who held the position for the last 12 years. Joseph did not contest the Roseau city Council elections.
The Council will be sworn in on Friday Dec 13 at 4.30 pm at the Arawak House of Culture.

Madam Mayor, my congratulations to you. As a positive individual and one that I have worked with, I see CHANGE for the City in many forms. Let me assure you that you have my full support and can be called upon at any time once the needs arise. I am certain that the rest of team will definitely give you the support you deserve. Let it not be “Business as Usual” but for betterment of the Municipality “Change will definitely come”.
Congratulations Irene, all the very best in your new job.
You are the Mayor, show your eyes nuh! why these dark sun glasses?
Congratulations to the new Mayor. Everyone deserves a fair chance.
That being said, let’s hope the city will be much cleaner and the open-truck garbage collection is over.
You have much work ahead of you.
Is Irene Clem John’s wife?
Yes, she is the wife of Clem John.
iam very glad that a lady is taking up that post time to powder under roseau arms clean it foot brush it teeth wash it hair and then bathe it all over and its whole body give it purfume it smell to bad
The people have spoken.
its woman time! those with the negative comments, remember it is your words and your negative attitude that is keeping down the country.
When someone is in the spotlight, I believe that people take the opportunity to bring down the person’s character. grow up, Dominicans. stop the jealousy and hate.
I support u a 100% thats all day do
i am sadened by someone who lack integriry is elevated to the office of mayor of Roseau. Is the public aware that the mayor stood bail for a drug trafficer intercepte by lawenforcement in recent times?.i am amazed with the calibre of persons and there achivements, who are evevated to the chair of mayor.aaanother sad day in Dominica and yet another pupett is risen. Lord help us all in this wondeful Dominica.
Langsal, firstly you need to edit any writings before submitting.
Congrtulations Madame Mayor,
i have known u all my life. i know you have always been some one with a vision and a drive. and always wanted to make a change and a difference in the lives of others so now that God has given you that blessed opportunity . grab it and run , do not be side tracked by THE HATERS, they are every where they will be at your every move, walk side by side with God and he will guide u to do the best job within your capacity .ignore the crab mentality of the HATERS THEY WILL BE LOOKING FOR EVERY CHANCE THEY GET TO DRAG U DOWN. this is why Dominica is the way it is for soooo long BE THAT CHANGE U ALWAYS WANTED. BIG CONGRATS Again.
What public office did she hold before the bail business?
Well live and learn. It seems that it is against the law to stand bail for someone. I am only going by the writer comments. I do not the circumstances but when did standing bail not okay? I would like the blogger to tell if no one from the UWP ever stand bail for anyone.
I hope the writer will never be in a situation needing help of any kind. What really is the matter with us anyway.
Congratulations to the New Mayor of the City of Roseau.
angsal, You seem to have some knowledge of the matter of which you speak but I am not certain what you mean by ‘intercepte’. I believe under Dominica’s laws an accused is innocent until proven guilty, the authorities determine who meets the requirements to receive bail and any qualified Dominican is allowed to post bail. So please explain what law did the Mayor breach that would give you the right to attack her integrity?
Your first 177 days, MADAME MAYOR, will count alot and mean alot to Roseau and its environs. Remembering Clem John’s 177, his highest, against St. Lucia in 1965. Congrats Irene.
I doh know for other countries but in Dominica power seems to be within family groupings – both government and opposition.
By marriage the Mayor is related to both the Mahaut and Salisbury UWP candidates!!! Well ,l
Hold up there..Dca is so damn small, so yes some of us are related by marriage and blood; what does that have to do with anything? Give the lady a chance to perform then comment. We all had the opportunity to go up for the post, why didn’t u put your hat in the ring?
hello.. duh! what do you expect?
Congratulations Mrs John. Please take time to understand the City Council Law and work very closely with your Clerk Mr Benjamin and Tommy Baptiste employee of the City Council they know the ropes and will guide you.
woosh “ma lay we” but is the joke. MAYOR. We finish in this country
another labar puppett
You have our support all the way. You can make it.
Stay focused as you develop Roseau to the city it should be.
WHOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.. LORD ammmm
Congrats to Mrs Irene John as the new mayor.I have full confidence you will do an excellent job.My thoughts and prayers are with you for a successful tenure.
Congratulations Mrs John…just put God first in every decision and he will direct your path.
congratulation to maddame mayor god blessings to u and i know u wll do a great job
Congratulations Mrs. Irene John. May God be you guide in your endeavours to uplift the City of Roseau.
She will do a good job. A woman’s touch on the city will be nice.
Congratulations Irene. I believe that you are quite capable. Just don’t carried away. Remember to seek professional advise before making decisions.
The fact that you were elected unopposed indicates that you have the respect of your peers. That is a solid way to start. Best wishes.
Go Irene, your pip in the north east of USA wish you Good Luck,
DO your BEST and GOD BLESS.
Congratulations Irene !!!!
congrats try your best
Eight (8) ladies and five (5) gentlemen make up this new council. We expect a good clean up of the city so I can stop turning up my nose when I am in the city.
CONGRATS!!!!!! Madam Mayor. You are in my prayers. Do not focus on the negative critics. I know you can. Just trust in the Good Lord and He will guide your path.
I thought the development of the city was the responsibility of all the residents of Roseau. Mrs John is hercules? WE have to assist her in every way we can. When store owners put out garbage in flimsy bags, we cannot blame Mayor! When crazy people leave the countryside & come & reside in the city, we ca,not blame Mayor. So let all of us put our shoulder to the wheel and support the new Mayor. Stop the nonsense of criticizing the lady. Congrats Mrs Mayor. May God protect & guide you.
Bad choice, . I am truly sorry for Roseau if we are depending on this woman to deliver.
Irene, you have the capacity to be MAYOR. And again, the women on board also have that capacity. There is one woman by the name of Regina Walsh who has been on council for a while, but I hear she declined the position long time. She is a woman well loved by all in her area, and her slogan for City council election – woman with a purpose, not for self, but for community. That is wat you need in city council. Dere does have too much colour talking and not work doing. Regina continue to work for development of community as you did with the stockfarm children playground. I know you too good. If you say you know your limitation, you know it. Some people does only want to say they in some fing, and nothing not dere. I know you will gve Irene maximum support. ONE love, and Irene do wat Cecil never do, get a way to run those PAROS out of Roseau. And Ms Prevost, do some fine around the streets where you live, kings Lane especially. Dere like a slum.
Congratulations Mrs John I am optimistic that you will do a remarkable Job.
Congratulation Mrs JOHN, I hope Guadeloupe nd Roseau community will foward in developing some school programs and economicals projects…
Congratulations and best wishes Irene. Go get the job done!!!
Congratulations Madam Mayor!!! Please , first order of business, clean up Roseau !
Congratulations to Mrs. John, i know you will do a good job because you have a good head on your shoulder and a sharp tongue in your mouth, do not be afraid to put them in their place when needs be. All of all you with the negative comments, if all you think all you can do a better job why not run for office and make all you contribution. One love.
So citizens who will be represented by these people only have the right to criticize if they run for public office? What a silly thing to say.
In other words, if you don’t run for public office, you should shut up?? Think before you write that nonsense.
A city is much bigger than a supermarket. Can she handle it. Just asking.
Was the former Mayor managing anything at all before he became mayor?
Slim you too meg in your thinking and also negative. Since you seem to have all the answers, why did you not contest???????????? Why can’t persons like yourself say something nice one of these days. And for your information, before you make those kind of statements, do your homework. If you did (I am telling you), Mrs John has been an admirable Civil Servant. Check the records. You seem to only know her in the Supermarket. Enough of this nonsense of saying what we want without facts.
Slim, your question was already answered by the residents; the mayor was elected unopposed by her fellow councilors and the councilors were elected by the residents of the City. At this point, in the best interest of Roseau, we should give the Mayor and Council our help and support to do the best job possible.
lmckoy
and your point is…black people…smdh!
FYI….She will handle it with grace and will put her years of management skills to good use and will most definitely do a much better job than Cecil for sure!!!
Dummy she served as a public servant for many years and also has her own business. Running a business involves budgeting, forecasting, management, accounting, HR, operations, financial management, client management, customer services etc. ALL OF WHICH ARE TRANSFERABLE SKILLS TO SERVING AS MAYOR.
When are we going to begin to uplift our people and encourage them?
BTW I do not know Irene, I am just responding to the content of your comment which can be applicable to anyone.
And the po-lit-ic-king continues
Congrats, rise my sister. Perform, show them that you are capable…it’s all good.
Dear Madam Mayor
Congratulations on your election to this esteemed office.
Anyways, I wish you well. One of your first duties, I think, should be to ensure that adequate lighting is placed on all the bridges in Roseau. I am fed up of walking on them at nights and having to struggle to see ahead of me. When you do it though, don’t just think of me; think of all the citizens that will benefit. Remember that personal benefit is not an attribute of Public Service.
I thank you.
What a joke
In time to come , Mrs. Irene John will replace Tim Tim as the nominee for the Labor party in the Goodwill Constituency and Cecil Joseph will declare enemy with Skeritt and the Labor Party.
Congratulations Mrs John. I wish you and fellow councillors all the best. As a Roseau resident, I hope you all can work with Solid Waste to arrange a better way to collect garbage in the city. All that garbage at every street corner on collection days is an eyesore and a totally unhealthy practice. That is priority number one. Then do something about those dirty stinking drains that Mayor Cecil was in constant denial about although all where you pass, drains just killing your lungs. Work together, forget your colours all of you and make Roseau a city,
I wish Irene John and the Council well. I hope they put all their efforts in making sure that we have an effectively functioning City Council, not one where people simply turn now and then for meetings. We need a council that can find permanent and effective solutions to garbage disposal and making Roseau a clean and beautiful city to work and live. We need safe sidewalks for pedestrians in the city. The Council needs to find creative ways to encourage more residents, including businesses, to pay their meagre taxes to help improve the city.
congrats to mrs irene john god bless u my lady and i know u are going to do a great job cecil joseph did a great job and u will finish what he left behind and it is not a red thing if we want dominica clean red blue or green we all have to put our heads our hands our feet together and work one love
je suits been trite pour la Dominica qui a been changer ces domage
sa a bien changer la dominica
I’m confident these new councilors will spruce up tired old Roseau and bring it back to life
Sorry to burst your bubble but Roseau has always been on life support. This capital city is an embarrassment to the Caribbean region.
Same B******t just a different Mayor!………….Hope they can make some changes in the accounts department at the city council.
Why didn’t you contest the elections just like the others did, that way, you could bring about the change you desire?
POOR DOMINICA
Anonymous, you have taken the time to make three separate comments but were unable to contribute even one thing constructive. Why the h— are you so bitter? If you think you can do better, why didn’t you run for the position? You didn’t even have the b—s to post using your name – coward!
Madam Mayor, congratulations and I wish you and Council great success in the task ahead!

Women representing! I’m very pleased. Let’s make Roseau a city to be proud of once again!
GO IRENE JOHN. You have our support. Make us proud. Surprise the critics!
I am not surprised, as long as you are wearing a red shirt, all top positions go to the DLP supporters. For example, the Chinese, the men and women who are selected to serve on different Boards and councils. The same DLP who talks about qualifications as regards to leadership, is the Same DLP who behaves like a raging Bull. As long as something Red is placed in front of their faces nothing else matters. Dominicans have finally found a Matador in the person of Mr. Lennox Linton of the UWP.
It’s the Christmas season mate, please cheer up and and stop being an angry, sour-spirited individual like your dear blue leader
DNO, where is the picture of our mayor? If one do not know who is Irene John, with posting her photo, no one wouldn’t be in a doubt.
The mayor will not beable to do all the work of the council, all the members have to come together, be it red blue or green, we need all hands on deck
When I submitted that comment, the picture was not yet posted. Now I can see who is the person and besides that , she is my friend but believed that she was living in Salisbury
Well is now beff going to pong. They will have to build an ABATTOIR to process all that meat.
Congratulations Mrs. John. I am sure you will do a great job. God bless you in your future endeavours.
Yes, six women in the council. Not one Govt. nominee! What does that tell you? I’m confident these new councilors will spruce up tired old Roseau and bring it back to life, to everybody’s joy. I want to see it lively at night, with shops and restaurants open and no fear of vagabonds accosting you. Safe and clean with police smiling on foot patrols. Yes, Sir, we are on our way!
Huh!! Read the names of the government nominees again. Not even knowing who they are I can safely say two of them are women.
Irene your record speaks for its self. Give it your best short, Im there with you!
