IT professionals seek to raise IT awareness & standards in Dominica

DAITP logoThe Dominica Association of Information Technology (IT) Professionals (DAITP), has been continuing its efforts to heighten awareness of Information Technology (IT) and to raise standards in the practice of the profession in Dominica.

DAITP joined forces with the rest of the world to celebrate System Administrators Appreciation Day last Friday and encouraged employers to show some form of appreciation for their IT personnel.

According to a release from the association, many businesses run several of their operations by utilizing computer technology, and with high dependence on the smooth running of computer systems network. “Internet System Administrators are increasingly important to the efficient functioning in both the public and private sector. System Administrators Appreciation Day is a way to give back through a small token or gift to persons that often speed very long hours and many late nights keeping those systems running smoothly in the background,” the release stated.

DAITP is the representative body of IT Professionals in Dominica and was formed to foster collaboration and high ethical standards among those in the IT field. The main focus of the association over the next year will be to strengthen its membership, coordinate IT certification training opportunities for its members and raise awareness of the IT field and IT knowledge among businesses and the public.

The association states in its release that “DAITP intends to engage businesses to hire qualified professionals to perform IT jobs that meet international standards, while ensuring that its membership has the required qualifications, training and high ethical standards necessary.”

The DAITP says it will launch A Tech Tip column in August to “provide useful pointers to businesses and the public in the running of their computer systems.”

I commend this endeavour to organize and improve the IT sector and awareness of IT and IT standards in Dominica. If I could make a suggestion I think a good idea would be the organizing and hosting of events such as conferences and seminars. Much like what was done in the IT fest event. If we can generate enough interest we could even possibly look to get some big names to visit the island and give talks. We should think big, being successful in IT nowadays is all about innovation and seeing the big picture. It’s not just about knowing stuff anymore. It’s about doing things that make an impact. Our people have talent, we just need to bring it out. Creating a strong IT culture in the country and generating interest I believe will go a long way to making that possible.

Man’s worst enemy is one he cannot do without nor avoid. This enemy is called. “MODERN TECHNOLOGY.” Soon he will hate it more than his first loved for it.

No actually man’s worst enemy is ignorance, and the foolish pride that goes along with it. Both are frequently working together to destroy us.

I endorse your comment. The governed focus is about individuals getting wealthy while no concentration is given to ensure the the country develop its skills. The monopoly that Lime holds in high speed will continue to kill the sector. Yes we need lobbyist but those that are willing to stand up against authorities and not those that will sleep in bed for their future gains.
    Dominicans IT is one sector

We need to go back to the soil. Young people needs to be more innovative and also out financial institutions needs to be more flexible not just in giving out cash but in helping those in need with assistance in viable business casses

Dominicans take note the prosperity of our beautiful country lies in our hands. We are the one the will be held responsible for the debt that is being incurred by out present administration. The time has come where we should do something about it.

I will always remain a proud citizen of the beautiful island I call home

    Concern citizen

we need people who are educated in the field as well to step up and not just take a back seat while all of this is going on… everybody when they talk I.T in Dominica is just throw random words together and not know what they talking about… I.T is not just putting on a pc and knowing what a keyboard and mouse is.

      smh

its just sooo ridiculous and unbelievably upside down…you spent your effort and time on: “System Administrators Appreciation Day last Friday and encouraged employers to show some form of appreciation for their IT personnel.”..instead of doing something really useful for your IT business…how about lobbying to get faster internet, how about trying to create law about data protection, how about creating infrastructure for server hosting in Dominica..I can continue more and more…knowing that IT sector is non-existent in Dominica, infrastructure is very poor, LIME monopoly killing any normal IT project…knowing all that you deal with such things….hopeless

You do have great points, but, delivered in an unreasonable manner. All the points you brought up are points that have been discussed within the group. These are things that takes time influence change especially for a group as young as the DaITP(1 year). So before you go of ranting and calling people “hopeless”, you should do your homework. The DaITP is a great initiative that will be addressing these issues in the foreseeable future, and instead of breaking it down, you seem to have the right ideas to contribute to the group. All the work on the Laws have already been done. Right now is lobbying time to get the government to pass them.
