British University students Kayaking for a cause

It is not unusual for university students from all over the world to visit Dominica but a recent visit by four university students from the United Kingdom did not fall into the “usual” category.

The British students arrived in Roseau on Saturday July 13, after a gruelling 10 hour kayak voyage from Martinique.

They are undertaking a 9 week, 800 mile-long expedition across the Caribbean from Grenada to Puerto Rico – in kayaks.

The 4-man KX Kayakers team hope that their efforts will help raise £40,000 for one of the top 5 Children’s Hospital in the world, the Gt Ormonds St Hospital in London.

Michael Houston, Edmund Magnus, Tom McAlpine and Woody Dewar began their adventure on June 18, 2013 by studying a world map around a kitchen table. The journey began in Grenada and ends in Puerto Rico. They are doing it on their own without any supporting vessels.

The kayakers write on their Facebook page “Relying on human power alone and paddling unsupported, it will be an extremely challenging journey. We aim to cover a distance larger than the Dover-Calais stretch every other day.”

They say with many stints being over 30 miles long, the team will often be kayaking for over 12 hours non-stop, sometimes through the night. The longest stint (80 miles) will involve kayaking for over 30 hours straight. “The whole expedition will be an enormous test of mental strength, physical endurance and character,” according to the university students.

Hurricanes, tropical storms, high seas, sharks, and pirates are just a few obstacles that the team may face. “We are aware that this expedition is potentially very dangerous and many of the risks are out of our control, but after 6 months of meticulous research we are confident that we can safely complete it,” they state.

Boy oh boy judging by your comments above I am shocked to learn that Dominicans have such narrow minds.
this trip is for a good cause that may benefit people world wild.
Let us hope that no Dominican child ever develop an illness where they will require help, support from great Ormond St. Please remember that they are the world specialist leading Children’s Hospital and that Dominica may need to bow to then. All I can say big up Kayakas. As for foreigners coming in and people not trusting them then it is up to the DA gov to wise up.Do their home work.Dominicans are drug mules to

Are you all stupid? Did you even bother to read the article? The irony is that you all say white people are crazy yet you all would run to the USA any chance you get; that you cant trust them yet you all want to dress like them and follow their styles.
According to the article “The 4-man KX Kayakers team hope that their efforts will help raise £40,000 for one of the top 5 Children’s Hospital in the world, the Gt Ormonds St Hospital in London”.
It may not be a conventional way of raising funds, but it is the only way they know how to and you should be congratulating them that they have ventured on this journey to help sick children. Why don’t you all do something locally based, walk with fliers and visit different companies and persons to raise money for the infirmary or for sick children unable to travel to get the more advanced medical care. If you can’t say anything positive then shut your mouths.

anything to be famous, even it cost you your life. Look a young English lady who was trying to swim the channel between England and France just died while trying to swim it. Why do those risky things just for fame. Their choice not mine, i would never attempt anything just to be famous.

DNO should block off negativeness from the public.

I am not going to do anything the dumb for a change. change for what, i value my life and will not risk it just to say i made a change. now-a-days people do anything just to be noticed and sadly enough we in Dominica have joined that ban wagon. Sad, sad, sad, very sad.
