Lennox Linton is Chronicle’s Man of the Year

Lennox Linton

“In our struggle this year to preserve Dominica as an independent democratic republic, no voice has been as articulate, unrelenting and uncompromising as that of journalist, Mr. Lennox Linton.”

These words from the December 7th issue of the Chronicle, set the stage for the newspaper’s justification of its selection of Linton, host of the “Between You and Me” talk show on Q95 FM, as its 2012 “Man of the Year.”

The Chronicle identifies some of the key areas of Linton’s advocacy as his “meticulous” chronicling of “the failings and manipulation of the justice system” and challenging and forcing  the Integrity Commission “to live up to its statutory mandate to ensure integrity in public office.”

The newspaper also credits Linton with exposing “highly questionable government procurement practices even when those charged with oversight responsibilities have maintained their silence”.

The Chronicle reminds its readers that a few years ago, Linton forced the return of over half a million dollars which the paper says was illegally expropriated from Dominica’s treasury.

It attributes government’s decision to enact a procurement bill which proponents claim will help prevent “similar acts of corruption in public sector procurement”, to that investigation by Linton of the “Garbage Bin Bobol”.

Another of Linton’s accomplishments cited by the paper, is his his education and sensitization of the public about “the shocking failure to investigate and prosecute those responsible for the December 25, 2010 fire-bombing of the home of former Chief Magistrate, ex-serviceman and octo-generian, Mr. Glenworth O.N. Emanuel.”

The Chronicle credits a petition to the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court spearheaded by Linton, for a decision by the court to fix a date for hearing this matter, “within days of receiving the petition signed by over one hundred citizens”.

Linton has also consistently criticized Dominica’s economic performance in the areas of foreign direct investment, export earnings and GDP growth as being well behind those of our neighbors in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU), a state of affairs he insists is unacceptable, especially given the fact that we have the largest cabinet of ministers in the grouping.

According to the Chronicle, “The integrity of his advocacy on Dominica’s economic challenges has been fully vindicated in a recent report from Business Monitor International in association with the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank which confirms that Dominica holds the cellar position in tourism based ECCU economic performance.”

The paper points out that Linton has tarried “as the conscience of the nation” and not been deterred from the path of righteousness, despite being vilified by his detractors, ‘effectively’ denied employment by the authorities or by anyone associated with them, receiving veiled threats, and ostracized because of his vocal and principled opposition to government wrong doing.

“He has offered hope to many who, for myriad reasons, are reluctant  to express their concerns about the path which the authorities have embarked upon,” the weekly publication posited.

The Chronicle sums up its citation of its 2012 Man of the Year this way:

“And so, for his pro bono Herculean efforts to preserve our democracy; to make all our law enforcement officers live up to the high principles of their office; to bring to justice those who have committed heinous crimes against  the State and its people, and for his efforts to preserve and uphold the provisions of Dominica’s constitution, The Chronicle selects journalist, Lennox Linton as its Man of the Year 2012.”

Lennox Linton did not “force the IPO Commission”(as The Chronicle says) to inguire into the allegation of breach of the Code of Conduct by Skerrit for using his Office for private gain. The Ipo Commission rejected two of Linton’s allegations against Skerrit and thought it necessary to investigate the third allegation by holding an inquiry under the IPO Act. The Commission gave full reasons for its decison which is contained in its Third Annual report to the House of Assembly. Both lennox Linton’s and Skerrit’s supporters and lawyers have attacked and condemned the IPO Commission for this.Nobody seem to want the Commission to do its job in accordance with its understanding of the law. They have attacked the Chairman Julian Johnson and selected Commissioners including Babs Dyer,Sir Brian Alleyne and David Bruney in that same Chronicle, and also on Kairi, Q95, and in the DASS and Citizens Forum. They want the IPO to be their footstool.Every thing is partisan and upside down.”Plee tar plee twiss”.
Lennox Linton deserves great credit for his work in exposing the procurement scandals of 2009 and should have been given that accolade in that year.

    • December 25, 2012

Dont be too petty give the man his due it dont matter if they decide to act on the third issue they did but ask yourself who is preventing the IPO from doing their job it is right in your face do you have what it takes to speak out against what your boy Toney and Skeritt are doing now by the looks of things the only persons who will be allowed to be on the IPO will be supporters of theres so I would suggest to try to get on board.

Well Done Lennox for keeping us informed. You presentations have been of a very high standard and raised to the level way above that of those labour party members in the house. They are all stuck at the next level or stuck somewhere in a toilet. HOw disgusting.
Lennox, you have educated us, you have openened our eyes and ears and your stern presentations have been consistent and true. Well done, we wait for more truth of matters of state, the others of the animal kingdom just cannot match…………they are still locked within the Supremo caballevel.well done Lennox well done

Heartiest congratulations to Mr. Lennox Linton on his marvelous award. His hard work, honesty and efforts are appreciated. For, it takes a certain amount of courage to do what he is doing. Lexicographers tell us that courage is that quality of mind which enables men to encounter danger and difficulties with firmness and that cowardice is the want of courage to face danger. By his perseverance, Mr. Linton can certainly teach our people a great lesson in courage and cowardice, particularly those politicians and PIPS who sold out for their mess of potage and then try to pretend that they are eating take out.

May Gog bless you Mr. Linton and give you strength, knowledge, enough resources and community support to continue. Your award epitomizes your selfless approach and extraordinary devotion to the Nature Isle. And, as the little children say, “one day, one day, kankadee…

You know something GanghamStyle? I agree with you!

Based on the criteria that they used for choosing Lennox Linton, the Chronicle has seriously hurt its credibility. Not saying that using specific criteria Lennnox is not in fact deserving of such an award but The Chronicle really went overboard and was talking about someonlese it seems.

They should have stuck to two criteria. 1. his unwavering diligence during the Labour years and 2. he consistently generates national dialogue which is paramount to a country’s survival.

To me that’s where it starts and ends. Peeping Tom was right in pointing out that some of the reasons that the chornicle cited really belonged to others like Jerry Brisbane. Now there’s a man who deserves man of the year! Has he been afforded such recognition?

Anyway GS, indeed! The Chronicle should be more neutral and far more careful if their year end award is to maintain any degree of reverence at all!

BUT, nice bump for the opposition I guess amidst Skerrit’s frustrating ability to defeat the system.

  19. Seriously ?

The Chronicle Newspaper is the most consistent printed paper in Dominica and all those who criticize are the first to buy it because they know it carries truth in it.

On the queestion of Lennox Linton; the man has worked hard to “open up Dominicans eyes” to the increasing high levells of corruption and has brought up a lot of issues that would otherwise not be exposed…

Because some of you do not support the man and the Chronicle you will not identify with the man being bestowed man of the year 2012 by the chronicle newspaper but the man deserves the title and thanks to lennox Dominica is not a one party dictatorship state…

I prayed for Tony on saturday night, because I really thought the man would have had a heart attack as the Chronicle announced that MR.LENNOX LINTON was the man of the year.I understood from a friend that Tony’s major problem was because when he was selected the man of the year his wife Porcia was not mentioned, whereas the Chronicle mentioned Mr.Linton’s beautiful wife. In a few days the Integrity Commission will meet to discuss accusations against Skerrit that he either owned or partly owned the Villas.I understood emails implicating Skerrit as the owner of the Villas will be presented. We must not forget that those same emails were referred by Skerrit and Tony as being cut and paste.I hope the commission will request that the originals be produced at the hearing.

Dorrival, I’m sure there are many Americans, who would subscribe to that view. That is the beauty of democracy. People are entitled to express themselves and have a choice. The trouble in Dominica is that we have very little tolerance for someone else’s opinions and take umbrage at the slightest deviation from views that do not strictly agree with our own. I am nt naive to so ignore the fact that Ennox has hi political motives however Lennox certainly deserve such recognition not only be ause he as single handedly exposed te filthy and immensely corrupt attributes of the Dominica Labor party but that te quality of his research and presentation cannot be denied. In fact the quality of presentation by hs detractors on Kairi ( none of them) can compare to that which Lennox serves.
So far Lennox has been the one exposing the lies coming from SKERRIT and Tony and it has been working very well indeed. I am so impressed with the way in which Lennox through his consistency is able t prove Cotradictions , be it from Tony, Bubbles, CRAZY, SKERRIT ,the priest attorney, the passports salesman senior attorney, the evil priest and pastors, Isidore et al.
Lennox’s tenacity is admirable. His willingness to keep going after the truth is unprecedented , in Dominica. So far all that he has done to reveal the massive corruption with the Tony Astaphan Labor Party have been credible; We know who own the villas, we know about the French passport maneuvers, we know without a doubt about te bobol with fertilizer, we knw about the money laundering to return the loot ack to the treasury, we know about the Layou River Hotel fiasco, the bubbles lies, the Felix Gregoire silence, the Denny Confession, Tony’s lies by any and all means. The lst goes on.
If Tony can get the recognition then certainly anybody else can – even Denny Shillingford would become a worthy candidate

Further thats what makes Dominica 3rd world. In fact not 3rd world more like 6th world! That people with Lennox’s skills for investigative reporting cannot operate successfully under the wrong government unlike say the USA where you have a Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly making hundreds of millions of dollars under Obama or you have a Bill Mahr having his own multi-million dollar deal with HBO under Bush.

      6th world versus 1st world.

The Chronlcle may well be within its undisclosed criteria to name Mr. Linton as Man of the year but, the reasons that it has submitted for doing so are not only vague and abjectly weak but also confusing. The Chronicle could have done a much better job of its citation.

I actually agree that Mr. Linton is deserving of such an honour, not because of some noble pro-democracy stance, which is ludicrous, or of his «achievements» in criticising the government; but because he has been steadfast in his advocacy for what he considers to be deserving issues.

However this is where the Chronicle falls short: It confuses Mr. Linton’s self-serving efforts with noble deeds in the interest of preserving «our democracy!» Let us examine briefly a few of the most preposterous claims made n the article.
1.DNO: “meticulous” chronicling of “the failings and manipulation of the justice system” ….Well, Mr. Linton’s sense of justice does not extend to his own definition of justice. In other words, justice is only served when it serves his interest; otherwise, he will resort, like a tempestuous little boy to tantrums dismissive of every institution that he claims to want to protect. Did you hear Mr. Linton cry down a certain lawyer and former top UWPwee leader when that lawyer was found to be involved in questionable conduct? I don’t hear Mr. Linton crying out for the police officer and his family whose house was firebombed while they slept or watched TV. I do not hear Mr. Linton crying out for justice for the victims of many unsolved murders in our island. Justice cannot be selective. It is a farce to link Mr. Linton with any serious attempt at improving our justice system. He speaks out only when it serves his interest.

2.DNO: «It attributes government’s decision to enact a procurement bill which proponents claim will help prevent “similar acts of corruption in public sector procurement”, to that investigation by Linton of the “Garbage Bin Bobol”….No. This is nothing more thana weak effort at inflating Mr. Linton’s résumé. Credit for this bill is more aptly placed at the feet of others, e.g Mr. Brisbane, Mr. Leblanc of ACE Engineering, and Government .
3.DNO: «Another of Linton’s accomplishments … his education and sensitization of the public…» If our schools educated our children as Mr. Linton is claimed to educate, Mr. Linton, himself, would be protesting against the schools as an arena where our children are brainwashed. He has spent the better part of the past years struggling in a «fishing expedition» to arrive at conclusions that make sense, to no avail. Over and over again, he proves to be miserable at arriving at conclusions. How then can he «educate» when his logic is as wobbly as Humpty Dumpty on a tightrope?
4.DNO: « The Chronicle credits a petition to the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court spearheaded by Linton”. Oh Please! Any riff raff can use the same mechanisms used to access the Court. No big deal here.
5.DNO: «The paper points out that Linton has tarried “as the conscience of the nation” … » Lol! Come now. I don’t that even Mr. Linton believes this. If he has been unable for more than 10 years to reap the rewards of his efforts, how then do you conclude that he has this much impact on the «nation?!» LOL!!
6.DNO:« “And so, for his pro bono Herculean efforts to preserve our democracy.»….Well, this is another huge joke. Democracy? Unless the Chronicle’s definition of democracy is mob rule. This man has bent into all sorts of convoluted positions to brainwash the public and to persuade it to reject the results of a legal process that he will admit is sanctioned by the same document, the Constitution that he claims to champion. Frankly, Mr. Linton has proven to be more a threat to «our democracy» than a facilitator.

I would name Mr. Linton Man of the Year though. I would do so because he has succeeded in keeping Dominicans thinking about the state of our nation. Presently, no one does it like he does. Through his constant shameless, unmitigated and unprecedented bombardment of our ears with suppositions, gossip, rumours, phantasmagoria, and facts, he inevitably forces us to ask questions about the direction in which we are heading. Some of us question whether freedom of speech means freedom to say anything, while some champion his brand of journalism as a model for all nations. I think even his enemies and detractors pay attention to what he says. Most Dominicans clearly do not agree with him (as is evidenced in recent elections). However, I think it is correct to give him credit for keeping certain public issues on the front burner, doing what the official opposition has refused to do. (BTW, the alleged firebombing of a house at Goodwill is not a public issue.) Credit is also due to him and others for helping return monies to the Treasury, I think this is Mr. Linton’s greatest achievement, his apogee. He has not proven «bobol» in either the fertiliser or garbage can scandals, but he surely has proven that we were overcharged. Thanks!

So, by all means, the gentleman is deserving of such an honour, I think; only, certainly not for the reasons stated by the Chronicle. Then again, what can we expect from the Chronicle?

Tom, please don’t let your political persuasion cloud your normally lucid sense of judgement. Lennox is not a saint, nor does he pretend to be but he certainly provides a very healthy counterbalance, which is essential if we are to preserve our democracy and for that he is to be commended. Just imagine we would only have GIS to go by for instance.

Your problem dear person is that you are peeping and not looking and therefore miss alot. i would suggest that you take time out to have a proper look instead of peeping.
1)because you didn’t hear doesn’t mean that he had nothing to say about the former UWP political leader.
2)As much as you may want to give credit to others, the very nature and wording of the act suggest that the reason for this act is solely due to the bins transaction.
3)you certainly have no sense of logic if you cannot see the logicin what r. Linton says.
4)yes that is a big deal because no riff raff has found it fit to do what he did.
5)you too do not believe what you have said here.
6)What can say? you are so brained washed that you cannot see past the utterrubbish being dished out by a certain SC.

I belive you forgot to discredit this one, “The Chronicle reminds its readers that a few years ago, Linton forced the return of over half a million dollars which the paper says was illegally expropriated from Dominica’s treasury.”
Go ahead Peeping Tom have a go at this one and tell us the truth?

That was just a bunch of “jibberish”! You seem to be jealous of Mr. Linton. Do something positive for your Country – rather than spewing garbage and discouraging those who make an effort. Lennox never claimed to be perfect – but he sure has more credibility than the entire corrupt Skerrit Govt!!!

A lengthy piece of garbage. You have got to live with it.Linton is the Chronicle’s man of the year, for his bringing to light all the nefarious activities and malfaesance in public office of those imposters who are posing as leaders here in this poor and failed country. WELL DESERVED LINTON!

      December 11, 2012

Peeping Tom this is where Lennox separate’s himself from your operation team – Tony was given the same recognition last year and Lennox Linton did not go all out to criticize the chronicle or to launch an attack on Tony so as to devalue Tony’s award. Lennox has proven time and time again that he has more class and excellence than those on your side of the fence. Hairy Chien Mais dir danye blanc.
The honest man cannot deny that Lennox is worthy of the recognition.
By the way Lennox did chastise Earl Williams – several times.

Excellent choice!. This man has been the biggest and sharpest thorn in the flesh of the 18 pieces of plastic referred to as the corrupt cabal, posing as a government. The sharpest thorn in the flesh of a corrupt regime that has brought the country to its knees as one of the poorest in the Caribbean. Instead of doing what they have been elected to do, time after time after time, they find themselves concentrating on this one man, and the matters of state are neglected.
Lennox is the flagship of patriotrism on island, an excellent individual, with an umblemishd record re honesty, integrity and character. Thanks to your entire family Lennox for giving Dominica such an honourable gentleman, who despite the vitriol, vituperations and invectives hurled at him, he continues to comes out stronger and stronger.
Without you most of us can imagine the level of corruption, the malfeasance that would prevail on island. It makes most of us double, treble or even quadruple our love for you, and the tremendous amount of pro bono work that you have done, and continue to do on behalf of all of us.

I have always felt that success is not about money or fame but of victory. The names that endure are not those of big money men and women but of those who were victorious. The success and endurance of Jesus the Christ is victory over death. The essential successful person is one who has victory over fear. Fear is the key to the front door of success or the slinky even stinky backdoor of failure. Lennox Linton has been raised up for this victory for while the rest of us cower and tremble close to the backdoor exit in the darkest shadow of “see nothing-say nothing he stands on mountains and strides out boldly going where the rest of us are too scared to go. Congratulations Lennox. For you it is appointed to ride the stormy seas.

I’m in agreement with the New Chronicle news paper for choosing Mr Lennox Linton for their Man of the Year . I believe that this honor to him is deserving for the following reasons : he has been relentless in his pursuit to uncover lies , tricks , illegalities and scandals in public governance – for not giving up on the fight for truth and transparency in public office and government – for sacrificing his life , time , talent and intellect for the sake of humanity and justice . I don’t know Lennox Linton personally however I have listened to his talk show from time to time and I’m convinced that he is truly a brilliant journalist . Many have questioned his qualifications to define him as such but those who have questioned , we trained by him and received their experiences from him . Lennox is extremely clever and eloquent and no one can take that from him . Job well done Mr Linton and I’m truly happy for you and your family- congratulations !
