President of the United Workers Party (UWP), Lennox Linton, has decried ongoing talks of a snap election which will supposedly be held in December. For weeks now, there has been speculation on social media that Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, will be calling a snap election, similar to the one he called on December 6, 2022.
Many are pointing out that the announcement of various projects around the island is a hint of such a move. Some are even saying that the announcement will be made during the official groundbreaking of the international airport on November 9, 2024, or at the Dominica Labour Party’s Delegates’ Conference on November 10.
Although the rumors have grown in intensity in recent days, they have not been confirmed by Skerrit nor anyone in authority but according to Linton such a move without electoral reform would be a “blatant disregard for democratic principle and an insult to the people of Dominica.”
He also said it would be an affront to democracy and an abuse of power.
“You must understand that this is coming nearly two years after the snap election of 2022 which itself was called two years before the full [five-year] term had ended,” he said.
“That was the fourth straight elections Skerrit called since his 2008 commitment to protect his re-election legacy by preventing the Electoral Commission from putting in place electoral reform for free and fair elections,” Linton stated.
Linton argued that such behavior demonstrates what he described as a “dangerous and authoritarian pattern” in which the Prime Minister acts like “Dominica is his personal domain.”
“He manipulates elections blatantly violating the will of the people to perpetuate his dictatorial rule,” he said.
“Dominica is not Roosevelt Skerrit’s personal property, yet Skerrit’s regime continues to deny the people their right to a transparent democratic process opting instead for rushed, manipulated, fraudulent elections. His repeated disregard for democratic norms threatens to push the country further into economic and social decline while he and his close circle benefit from the system they have corrupted.”
Linton noted that calling another snap election in 2024 would be an affront to democracy and an “undeniable abuse of power,” which according to him, disqualifies Skerrit as a fitting and proper person for being the leader of Dominica.
“So, people I am saying to you this is crunch time, serious business,” he said.
“Not time to be ‘backing and forthing’ on snap elections. It is time to decide where you stand. Do you stand for the man who wants to own and control Dominica for his billion-dollar gain or do you stand for Dominica? We see clearly now that the man who has refused to allow free and fair elections in Dominica for 16 years and four election cycles is no longer qualified to participate in elections (in Dominica)….”
Linton stated that since Skerrit has stood resolutely against electoral reform and free and fair elections in Dominica, he has lost the legal and moral authority to call any snap election or any election at all.
“He must step aside and allow, truly, the ship to emerge. Leadership that will govern with integrity, fairness, and the welfare of the people in mind,” he remarked. “No electoral reform for free and fair election, no more Skerrit. We need to breathe, he must leave.”
He said a large national assembly will be called whenever the snap election is announced.
“As soon as he calls the snap election, we the people in the largest national assembly in Dominican history will let him know what time it is, time to leave,” Linton stated.
Skerrit has indicated that he expects to be chosen, unchallenged, at the DLP’s delegates conference on November 10, to lead the party in the next general election but he has not revealed when that election will be.

Can someone tell me which section in the constitution or laws of Dominica gives the Electoral Commission the authority to independently implement Electoral reform? Last time I checked the government sent draft legislation to the Electoral Commission for their notes and comments AS REQUIRED BY THE CONSTITUTION AND LAWS, it is perhaps close to six months and the Commission has not responded. Why has the Electoral Commission not submitted it comments after this protracted period?

In Grenada Keith Mitchell lost the last general elections after back to back CLEAN sweeps.
Why? Because a young charismatic Dickon Mitchell was able to “SELL” himself to the Grenadian people as a BETTER alternative. Appealing to the their aspirations.
I know in our system of government we elect members to the House of Assembly who then form the government. However, with the current political party structure, it’s ALL about the political leader. So what/who is the UWP “selling”? And are the people of Dominica “buying”?
Mr Linton’s focus should be on fielding candidates in the various constituencies in an attempt to win over voters instead of focusing on rumors. The outcome of any snap election will once again be a victory for the DLP if he’s not prepared to do the legwork. Expecting Dominicans to protest in mass numbers if a snap election is called is not a winning strategy. Mr Linton should know by now that he can’t rely on Dominicans to rally in large numbers the likes which would force the change he so desires. Furthermore, Dominicans are not yet at the point of desperation and Mr Skerrit is fully aware of that so he doesn’t really feel threatened by Mr Linton’s talk of mass protest.
Go out throughout the land and sell your vision of a better Dominica to the electorate and quit the nonsense about protest. Protests have not worked since the seventies.
Linton and his regular word salads. No substance, no authority, no real audience. I’m not impressed! Time to get over your boyish fantasy of becoming PM.
The Honourable Lennox Linton, the best prime minister Dominica has never had. The man has all the pertinent qualities to lead Dominica during these turbulent times. He is hyper-knowledgeable, insightful, articulate, empathetic, integrous, visionary and committed.
While Roosevelt is the epitome of evil, greed and dishonesty, Mr. Linton is diametrically opposite. Dominica needs his statesmanship and intellectual prowess to regain the respect of the international community.

That’s the problem right there, infighting and the refusal to accept Dr Fontaine as party leader. The electorate is fully aware of what’s going on within UWP which makes it more difficult for people to take them seriously. The million dollar question which comes to mind is, who’s making the calls anyway or is UWP just a rudderless ship afloat in the middle of the ocean? It’s time for UWP to get serious and demonstrate they’re capable and ready to move the country forward.
He has all the pertinent qualities including a high school student drop out. We also need a Dominican leader who is as handsome and educated as Maurice Bishop was. Sorry, but Lennox does not possess those qualities. Lennox is all about putting his hands on the CBI money to enrich himself and paying his outstanding bills.

The man opposition party (UWP) is in no position to contest an election even if all the electoral reforms were to be implemented. Thomson Fontaine has made a mockery of his position as political leader. The UWP supporters should be remonstratng for his removal.
That comment will infuriate some zealous UWP supporters. To you, I say, performance is crucial. Don’t give blind support to anyone. What has Dr. Fontaine done to grow the party’s base? Absolutely NOTHING!

I know Skerrit very very well. He thrives on trickery. In 2023 i called Dr Fontaine’s number just to give some advice. The telephone rang and rang and rang until the cows come home. No answer. I had the following to say to him:
a) UWP needs a vibrant and vical youth organisation.
b) UWP needs a visible caretaker in all 21 constituencies.
c) As leader you need to be seen by people in all the constituencies,on a regular basis.
d) Linton can’t do the work for you, he is no longer the leader.
e) Your leadership team is weak, if they still cannot beat Skerrit to his tricks.
f) You don’t need just money to win an election. The election is won on the ground.
I could not say any ot the above to him.
It’s a doggone shame that an arrant fool like Skerrit is using you all as a pappyshow. I don’t blame Skerrit, i blame UWP!

Honourable Linton i have never met you in person, neither have i communicated to or with you in any form. I hold you in extremely high esteem, as a patriot, a very brilliant man and one who speaks truth to power.
It’s well known by all with a functioning brain, that Skerrit’s enjoyment of a free life is predicated upon he being in power. The stakes of he losing power is disastrous not only for him, but myriad of associates. Therefore i blame the UWP, and the other parties for not doing the requisite work to prepare for this tricks by Skerrit the liar. Since general election 2019, i have not seen the UWP candidate who contested the election in my constituency, losing by just 400 votes. By now this constituency should be sealed in a blue bag. You can’t have an ABSENTEE leader and don’t expect the opposition to exploit that. You cant win an election by being on radio only.
