Mahaut baker, Akim Ismael, wins top honours at inaugural Caribbean Baking Awards (with video link)

Akim Ismael with winning trophy

Akim Ismael, the master baker behind Mahaut’s beloved ADI Creations, has risen to sweet success at the first Caribbean Baking Awards held this past weekend in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Ismael not only secured the prestigious first place in the overall baking competition but was also the recipient of the Rising Star and Cake Hero awards, which were determined by popular vote online.

The competition showcased the finest bakers from across the Caribbean, and it was Ismael’s exceptional skills and creativity that truly distinguished him, ultimately earning him the highest accolade of the event. The event kicked off on February 16 with a Cake & Wine Tasting Showcase, where Cake Artists from across the Caribbean unveiled their stunning creations under the vibrant theme of “CARIBBEAN VIBES.” Participating bakers were tasked with incorporating colors or showcasing elements of their island culture, along with providing a historical narrative of their respective islands through their intricately designed 2 or 3-tiered cakes.

Ismael’s winning cake, infused with a secret ingredient of gooseberry jam and pulp expertly prepared by Kervin Vidal of KV’s Delights and Patricia Emanuel, made a profound impact on both the distinguished panel of judges and the enthusiastic public. Its exquisite blend of flavors and meticulous craftsmanship left an enduring impression, solidifying Ismael’s place among the Caribbean’s top culinary talents.

The culmination of the event took place on February 17 with a grand award ceremony where Ismael clinched his well-deserved win. Humbled and honoured by his triumphant victory, Ismael emphasized that winning these awards was not solely a personal achievement but also a resounding testament to the relentless hard work and unwavering dedication of his team and the steadfast support of those who stood behind him.

“I want to thank everyone who supported, those who voted online, my sponsors, my team, my employer, the Convent High School, and my family and friends. I am thrilled to have copped the overall prize in this competition and I am proud that I represented Dominica to the best of my ability,” he expressed.

He further stated that participating in such a prestigious competition was an invaluable learning experience, one that will undoubtedly ignite and intensify his passion for baking. As he continues to hone his craft and push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of baking, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of excellence.

Ismael was accompanied by a dynamic team from Dominica to include, Jodie Dublin-Dangleben of Jaydees Naturals, Tamara Lewis-Celestine, Jodie Shillingford-Trew from Jodie’s Sweet Art, and Leandra Lander from Lovelee Things.

Congratulations to Akim Ismael and his team for their outstanding performance at the Caribbean Baking Awards.

Editor’s note:

Beverly Julien who represented St Vincent & the Grenadines came in second while in third place was Timoy A. Titus who represented Antigua and Barbuda.

Agree with you ibo, always makes me proud when I see our people are excelling.
We need first the village and parish to invest in Akim business.
Akim, bro never stop working hard, unfortunately, at this moment Dominicans are broke, nevertheless, mr laville and his cronies with all the money should partake in your business.
Everything in Dominica is political so let not be afraid to speak truth.
