DBS GM sacked

Days after the Information Minister Ambrose George told a press conference that “all is well at DBS” the General Manager Mariette Warrington was fired.

There has been no real explanation regarding the in-house conflict between the Board of the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation and Warrington, but reports are that they were on shaky grounds.

Dominica News Online was informed that Warrington was handed a termination letter on Sunday by a bailiff.

Recently, there were attempts to change the locks on the doors at the radio station, without Warrington’s consent, but she protested the situation, forcing the intervention of the police.

The terms and conditions of the termination are still not clear and the Chairman of the Board of Directors Aurellius Jolly refused to comment to the media on the matter.

George had informed the media last Wednesday that Warrington was on vacation, while the Board was reviewing the position of general manager.

He said that recommendations for the restructuring of the Corporation were made several years ago.

The Acting General Manager of DBS is Shermain Green-Brown.

Shame on you…. shame on Dominica…….shame on we all …….some do it by email……… in Dominica we do it by a bailiff. Never have I heard or seen someone get fired by bailiff before.

You change your lock when you want to put out your man or your woman and even that is on legal in some cases.

For the remainder of his tenure, I would be hard pressed to believe anything Minister Ambrose George ever says

How can anyone take Minister Ambrose George seriously at this point?

Poor Mr.George, the man does not even know how to respond to a simple question. He is the one I really feel sorry for. He has sank so low . All he had to say that we are constantly reviewing or key personnel and programs to ensure that the state owned radio station is doing its utmost best.

The manager knew it was coming if she is worth 2 cents about her so it should not be a surprise.

All of you preaching politics seem to forget when UWP came into power the then General Manager was changed and Dennis Joseph was made manager, Ferdinand Frampton was his deputy and GROOVY BAT was made news editor. The BAT had created such a mess and showed his incompetence that he was asked to resign. So why all this talk like is the first time things like that has happened?

Well all this is not the point? DBS is a public corporation, not a private company like Garraway Hotel. TGH does not have to account for their hiring and firing; but DBS does. let him who fired Ms Warrington — the minister or the Board — explain to the public why she was fired. There may well be a good explanation, but the public has a right to know. UWP-style governance is not good enough. It is not to be emulated. Let the public know please.

WHO are the members of the Board? WHY was the last Board dissolved? Were there sanctions applied to anyone as a result? Is this one of the things the DLP meant by “the next level”?

By the way I am one of those who were of the view that DBS needed new management — mainkly on grounds of standards (especially as regards the English language), programming and efficiency. However things need to be done properly; and the public does have a right to know why Ms Warrington was terminated.

Could someone explain to me what is really going on??? …but what valid reason does the Board have for letting Marriette go? … she has complied with the Board’s decisions…I would really love to know what the real story is behind this…. Marriette should make a public statement and put them to shame…

i used to wonder if only one set of people could sit on boards. Anyway, it is sooo amazing how those people on the board of Directors are so inconsiderate… To think that they are all working people, and just because they were given the power to do so, take someone’s one and only job, and sit by the roadside and make jokes about it. Especially when the reason is just because she refuses to be puppet, and would not make nonesensical decisions just because they said so. So now thepath is cleared for the real puppet master. Somebody else wants to be manager, and everyone else dances to that drum like little children under a spell. But what goes around, comes right back around, and when someone else who has more favour with the PM, or the board wants the position too, WATCH YOUR BACK!!

I am sorry to read Ms.Warrington loosing her job but why should any sensible DOMINICAN be surprised with the action of the GOVT I wonder if she will be called to testify as to why the Oppositions parties were refused air time I hope she help to bury the GOVT because they are using her as a scapegoat and I hope she do not go down alone.
Things are out of control on the Island and people cannot just turn a blind eye any more we all have to start speaking out .

Shame on you Mr Ambrose George, you were given another chance by the people in your constituency for which you should be very grateful for, I would like to know if there are ant Employment Standard Act in Dominica? and what are the Rights of The Employees and Responsibilities in Dominica? i read last week that the Manager of the Radio Station is on vacation, i would like to know if she is back at work, if not how can she be fired whiles on vacation, In the USA where I am employed for the past eight years, thee is no way in hell that i would be fire if on vacation, if the employer decide that his is not in favor of my performance, he or she will call me upon returning from my vacation, and do a performance evaluation and, if it is that i need to improve on something that i am not doing right, i will be informed, and given a period of time to do so, but there is no way that someone will be fire d from there job while on vacation if that is the case. In Dominica people tend to take things too lightly, and think that because they are bosses or ministers in Government they can do whatever they want, this is wrong and so wrong, was there a review of her performance if not, Mariette need to find her self a food attorney a suit the Radio Station and also Mr Ambrose for wrongful dismissal, i say for some big bucks, madam, and to Ambrose George, what you were involved in a few years ago, others took the rap, but had it been in the USA you would be surely sitting in jail for a long time, do all the dirty works, on day it will come back and hunt you your children and their children, continue do the dirty work and some day some yours will come again, Unions and the CAS is not the right moves for Dominican workers they need to be covered and protected by Employment Standard Act… after working in the station for all these years she will not be receiving any Workers Compensation, the PM who is the leader of the State, the Parliamentary Reps, the Senators and the rest of the employers in DA need to read The Dominica Employment Act if there is one, Ambrose you were spared a got a second chances please use it the right way and do not do the party dirty job, by hiring, firing and victimizing others, for what goes around comes around and when it will come around you the second time, you will see, remember you family, your children and their children, shame, shame shame and to you Mariette hold tight

  17. April 19, 2010

Dominicans take heed there seems to be a trend of sudden firing and layoffs we have to take these developments seriously for today it is D.B.S who knows how far this sort of occurences will lead too you heard it first on D.N.O the pot is starting to boil over soon the masses are going to get fedup of all these sudden developments and the rule of law will be compromised. Remember Patrick John and the events of 1979 i pray we do not arrive at this ugly day and a word of advise to my fellow law men and woman start going back to the drawing board and prepare for what seems to be a vocano in its early stages of erupting the examples are evident eg recently it was Layou, followed by Senaco, now Calibishie lets not sit on our hands and be taken by surprise. The air of tranqulity in Dominica is begining to smell bad and if the situation is not adress A.S.A.P we all will be sorry. PS “That`s not a threat but a warning cause it semms some body is asleep at the wheels. prevention is better than cure. From a true patriot Dominican.
    Peace.

  23. No manager around, no evidence
    April 19, 2010

Petitions have been filed in the courts by the opposition UWP regarding several irregularities which occurred at the 2009 general elections. One of them has to do with DBS Board not allowing equal access on the National Radio Station to the opposition, so that their views could be aired to the Dominican people The then Manager complied and had to implement the board’s decision amidst cries from many Dominicans of unfair practices which are against the laws of Dominica.

In 2009, the fiasco involving DBS Board where thousands of dollars were questionably spent forced the Minister responsible at the time to dissolve the board. It was embarrassing but nobody was seriously dealt with. If any investigation was conducted, the people know nothing of the result into that matter.

Dominicans must read through the lines. Even after Warrington as Manager defended DBS, and the DLP in many of their actions, in fact just recently, she is axed. No Manager Warrington around, maybe no evidence from her re. petition filed. is that the thinking that fueled that move to fire? Should the Dominican people speculate? The Minister has a responsibility to explain to us what is going on at DBS. But who cares? Mr. George does not have to explain anything to Dominicans, because he can win his seat anyway without the explanation. So much for respect and trust for people, good governance, transparency and accountability. Those words mean nothing now.

I found to be very interesting that the Information Minister Ambrose George told a press conference that “all is well at DBS” and a few after the General Manager Mariette Warrington was fired…

Mr. George knew exactly what was going on & yet still he chose to lie to the public to cover up the situation which was on the brink of blowing up… 1 thing d.ca have some real trustworthy government ministers… they know the truth about things but chose to lie to the public about it, they must be taking us for fools??? What ever happens in the dark will always come to light!

I feel there is a lot more to this situation than what we know so far… I hope that Miss Warrington will bounce back on her feet soon cause it rough in D.ca dem days

Oh! boy. Another round of political stupidity perhaps has hit the nation’s station once again. What a tangle web we sew. Will she go easily – it does not seem so. Whilst there is no indication of the reasons for the current situation, but it will nevertheless most certainly to result (seemingly so) in a long drawn out perhaps, court battle. The political fall out couldbe immense – Marriette coming from a strong political family. Has the cost been counted Mr. george? All Mariette’s poitical enemies from two past general elections will now rally to her cause. ex[pect a nasty backlash, Sir.

Why is my Parliamentary Representative, Mr. George, always th one to do the dirty work of firing?. His political troubles continue to haunt him
