GIS steps up drive to disseminate gov’t information

Acting information officer Tarnia Green

Dominica’s Government Information Service – GIS, says it is stepping up its drive to disseminate in a timely manner, information on the government’s policies, programmes and activities through the print and electronic media.

According to Acting Information Officer Tarnia Green, the GIS is also seeking to satisfy the needs of overseas-based Dominicans in the diaspora through “the introduction of its latest website www.news.gov.dm  designed to complement existing programmes”.

She says the thrust to put out government information far and wide also includes the availability of  “a facebook account (Gis Dominica) and a YouTube account (Gis Dominica)”.

The official information disseminating arm of the government says over the years, the Department has evolved from a fledgling information management function to a broad based news and public relations agency impacting on the opinions of the people of Dominica regarding matters of governmental and national importance.

The GIS is headed by a Senior Information Officer who has overall responsibility for the proper management and performance of the Department which highlights various government policies, plans, programmes and projects.

According to Green this is achieved through a cadre of experienced and well-trained officers who serve the needs of the various Ministries and Departments of Government, the news media, the private sector and the wider society.

GIS programmes include the National Focus television news package aired from Monday to Friday, a range of documentaries highlighting government programmes and initiatives, as well as  live and pre-recorded in studio discussions and profile programmes.

There is definitely room for improvement with regard to quality and timing of Govt. releases but I’m afraid they will always run behind when it comes to “hot” current affairs as everything they put out must have the approval of the Supremo first.

YOU CAN UPGRADE AS MUCH AS YOU WANT BUT UNTIL YOU RECOGNISE THAT THE OPPOSITION PARTIES ARE MADE OF DOMINICANS AND THEY TOO DESERVE TO BE HEARD ON GIS,YOU CAN GO TO HELLE.

Why would DNO post such “You can go to Helle”….I think it is to show the rest of us , how shallow and imbecile some members of the UWP are.

      • want to know
        April 4, 2012

Wikileaks i agree with you, but you know why DNO post”you can go to hell” is because they are all UWP.

There is nothing to stop you from starting a proper “gossip” publication. Go for it if you think there is a market, and give DNO some competition.

    This story seems totally random.
