LIME Jamaica not retreating from mobile market

Editor’s note: Some time last week DNO ran a story from the Jamaica Observer newspaper titled ‘LIME to retreat from Jamaica Mobile Market’. It now appears that Garry Sinclair, LIME’s Managing Director in Jamaica’s comments seemed to have been misconstrued. The Observer has since issued an apology. Below is the letter sent by Sinclair to the Observer’s editor.

Dear Sir:

I was extremely disappointed with your headline and lead sentence of the story in today’s Caribbean Business Report which says “LIME to retreat from mobile market”.   Your newspaper has made a declaration that is totally false.

In my presentation at our AGM, I stated that going forward LIME would be leveraging its position as the country’s only full service provider and competing vigorously in all our markets – landline, mobile, internet and business solutions – rather than placing a disproportionate emphasis on any single aspect of our business.   To hear these facts and conclude that we would be “retreating” from the mobile market is a highly unfortunate misinterpretation of the information provided.

Even the content of the same article completely contradicts the headline and indicates  that our “mobile services will not be neglected”.  I did point out that the current regulatory framework for telecoms makes it extremely difficult to compete in this arena, however we have no intention of retreating.

On the contrary, we have invested approximately $3 billion in the expansion of our 3G mobile network – the fastest in Jamaica – to cover St. Catherine, Ocho Rios, Negril and Montego Bay.  Added to that, is our launch of Jamaica’s first digital Mobile TV service which is redefining the mobile market.   This level of investment and innovation is indicative of a company that intends to stay the course and continue to give Jamaican consumers the kind of world class technology and value for their spend that they deserve.

In fact, on August 1, 2011, LIME will celebrate the 20th anniversary of our introduction of mobile service to the Jamaican market.  We are extremely proud of this milestone and I take this opportunity to assure our customers and the wider public that we will be here to serve them well into the future.
