Dominica’s dormant media workers association MWAD is on a mission to revitalize the organization.
Spokesman Mathias Peltier Jr., a popular radio talk show host, says MWAD has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday afternoon, hoping to attract the majority of media practitioners on the island, both those involved in the group during its more vibrant period and non-members.
Peltier says there are many issues facing media workers in Dominica requiring attention, and a re-vitalised MWAD will help focus on these matters.
He says too that opportunities including training for media workers are being missed because MWAD is not functioning at the moment.
The organisation’s president Phalia Remy last August relocated to London.
The group’s vice president Raymond Henderson has also been out of state for a while now pursuing academic studies.
Wednesday’s meeting will vote in a new executive, according to Peltier.
Treasurer Carlisle Jno Baptiste, a freelance journalist, told Dominica News Online that he will seek re-election to the post, but could also seek another executive position.
Other members of the current executive include the organisation’s secretary Ferdina Frampton, spokesperson for telecoms company LIME.
During its most recent functional period MWAD (the Media Workers Association of Dominica), had been giving some attention to a proposed Broadcast Act, underscoring some of the concerns it had with that proposed piece of legislation.
