Men fined for handling and receiving stolen goods

CourtfineTwo men who were involved in separate incidents of handling and receiving stolen goods have received separate sentences at the magistrate’s court in Roseau.

Recently-appointed magistrate, Bernard Pacquette, fined Merjavin Jno Baptiste $500.00 after he pleaded guilty to receiving a stolen lap top computer and David Daniel was slapped with a $2000.00 fine for receiving stolen goods and handling stolen goods.

Jno Baptiste is a sales person and repairs electronic items while Daniel is a road side street vendor. They both claimed in court that “Lucia” brought the computer items to them. Daniel also told the police that a Black Berry touch phone belonging to Suzanne Watty was brought for unlocking by “Lucia.”

The court was told that both men fully cooperated with the police resulting in the arrest of Lucia. Police prosecutor inspector Claude Weekes represented the prosecution in the matter.

Attorney Joshua Francis, represented Jno Baptiste and pleaded with the court for a non custodial sentence, saying that his client was “remorseful for his actions and was also a first time offender.” Lawyer Wayne Norde, made a similar plea on behalf of Daniel. He told the court that his client was 32 years old and he “totally regretted the incident, was also remorseful and a first time offender.”

Magistrate Pacquette cautioned both men about their behaviour and implored on them to walk the “straight and narrow path of the law.”

In another matter court matter, Frederick Xavier who was charged with grievous bodily harm on his girlfriend is now on remand until he finds a suitable surety to stand him bail. He was arrested by Pointe Michel police after he wounded his girlfriend Louise Julian, on April 13, 2013. She is now in Barbados seeking further medical attention for her injuries which the court was told are not life threatening but very serious.

Xavier’s bail amount is $20,000.00.

I hate a thief, especially after my place had been broken twice, but what is someone unknowingly handly stolen goods? Some cases are suspicious, and obvious. But what, for example is someone is selling a sheep, goat agricultural produce etc. How do you verify that it is genuine? Are sales of such items regulated?

Who, on DNO reviews the work presented to us the public? I am more than aware that academic standards have been on the decline over the decades( despite a few re-assuring performance once ina while)
My issue here is if they were seperate incidents what other form of sentencing could they receive?
Now just the blunder and no smart comments now!
have someone proof read before these postings come on.

Oh geez…..is this FET trying to show his smartness under another name. lol lol

The second ‘separate’ in the first sentence could have been left out but I don’t think it is so bad that it is detrimental to the English language. It could have been placed there for emphasis, you never know. There are many subtleties in writing.

I love what you wrote about those Newtown boys. Apart from football all what they can do is to smoke weed ,violence , go gwadala backdoor, crime and traffic drugs and sex sex sex sex people children & gossip and talk foolishness.
I also think that that hardworking government must focus a lot more on the boyz on the block. They need plenty help. And too many young women come up to Newtown to smoke weed and to do stuff. Some of them going high school and also college/BTC and that is not good at all. When there is football by the savannah or a jam nearby you can see it for yourself. Those people does smoke worse than chimneys. And the authorities aint doing anything about this!

Each time I visit it hurts my heart to see them in Montego Bay like loss sheep! It is painful to see how my sweet community has come. Lord! Lord !
WEED use transforms their conduct and they resort to violence at times. Dr. Benjamin will tell you DNO how many young men are suffering from mental disorder from Newtown and the environs. It is a sad state of affairs.
You young girls have some pride and sex while can be super sweet in Newtown and elsewhere but it aint running and have respect for yourselves and there is HIV/AIDS/STD’s etc. And parents monitor your kids. They frequent that Newtown area by the savannah called Sessame a lot and while all don’t smke weed but the temptation is great because it is legal there. You have to look at their lips color. The weed makes it look darker and look out for changes in behavioral patterns. Many of those users get very aggressive or become too calm or unresponsively withdrawn , others giggle uncontrollably and at times for no apparent reason. PARENTS BE ON THE WATCH. It is not only a NEWTOWN PROBLEM but it is the Head quarters for sure and other ghetto areas have similar issues.HELP US SAVE YOUR KIDS.
