An event aimed at “mixing education and elegance” dubbed a Pretty in Pink ball, which was held at the Goodwill Primary School (GPS) on Thursday, appears to have met its objectives.
Educator at the GPS, Tamika Mornacie, told Dominica News Online (DNO) that the event was targeting multiple areas.
“We decided to do something nice for the children because we know that the world today and the environment that they come from especially the neighboring communities Tarish Pit, Stockfarm, tend to be a bit rowdy and a little rough around the edges and when they come to school, they are so hyper and violent at times we wanted to show them that there is a softer side to life,” she said.
“So we decided to do a little mini ball/ prom, kind of thing for them but the color that you see, pink, we wanted to bring across cancer awareness.”
Morancie said that there was a guest speaker who held a “very, very interactive” discussion on cancer with those in attendance.
“We know that so many people have succumbed to this disease and you still have those who survived. So we wanted to recognized those who survived and still fighting the battle.”
Over sixty students in grades 4, 5 and 6 participated in the activity.
Morancie said next time they intend to take aim at bullying.
“We know that bullying is very common in all the schools among children. So hopefully we will be outstanding in orange (the color for bullying).”
“The children enjoyed themselves,” she noted, adding that she believes that the school achieved the goals which were set for the event.
Very nice indeed. Showing an understanding the softer side if life. Good works GPS my school.
