Movado is last major act to be included in WCMF line up

Jamaican Dancehall artist Mavado has been named as the final major act to be added to the line up for the 18th edition of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF).

“This morning with about a month to go before the WCMF our lineup is complete in its entirety and we are pleased to announce our final addition to the WCMF,” Marketing Assistant at the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC), Marva Williams, said at a press conference at the DFC’s office on Tuesday. “We are pleased to announce that Movado our Jamaican Dancehall artist is officially part of the lineup.”

Mavado, whose real name is David Constantine Brooks, was born and raised in Jamaica.

“He is a Jamaican Dancehall artist popularly known to the entire world,” Williams informed.

“He has more than 45 hit songs …and this gentleman, he’s been described as having the ability to voice his experiences and capture the imagination of Jamaican youth every step of the way. He cut the ears and eyes of a new and broader fan base and he knows exactly how to make his emotions appeal universal.”

She stated that every artist chosen was chosen because of their appeal to different crowds. Mavado will perform on the final day –Sunday 26th October 2014.

Music to my ears! This is one of the best lineups

  3. September 25, 2014

OLD people don’t go to shows. They cannot generate enough money to pay them Artists. Just attend the ones you want to attend and leave the Artist and WCM organizers alone.

How do you justify the name WCF with this line up? When Jamaica have music festivals do they include WCK, Kassav etc? Time for a name change

Seychelles is also an up-market destination whereas Dominica is a down-market one. Can’t wait for the new government to put some quality into the place and raise the standard.

Writers, PLEASE PLEASE pay attention to spelling before posting these articles…. it should have been written… he CAUGHT the ears….as opposed to…he CUT the ears….
I would hate to think that he really did CUT the ears and eyes….those words may almost sound the same, but they have very different meanings.

Nothing will please you ppl…Some of you are just a bunch of hypocrites…All those Christians talking about Lyrics will not be attending the show so why don’t you stay out of this conversation. If we are talking about banning music then we should ban BET; Carib Vision; CVN TV; and all the DJs who play Jamaican music. You guys sound like a bunch of pathetic hypos. Dem!!!!

BET is racist anyway. Imagine a channel called WET, every one would denounce it. I’m not watching that crap just because I’m black. That is too patronising.

Put out the cash to bring in the reggae rising stars like Chronix and Protoje… NOT Jah Cure and Movado. More people from neighboring islands will come to see these artists perform hence more profit for the festival.

Free will, freedom of speech is lacking in backwards Dominica. The Lord gave us the freedom to choose not for others to choose for us. My problem is if there was not so much Obeah, alcoholism and sexual perversion in Dominica I would understand the holier than thou attitude exhibited by most Dominicans.

There should be a change it the name of the event to “Dominica Music Festival” instead of ” World Creole Music Festival” cause some of the arts or artistes are not performing ANYTHING creole. some may argue that it’s in the creole season, Yes true that but the event has stray from creole.. cause arts from all genes are on the line ups

    • Smh
      September 24, 2014

Smh!We in Dominica really need to stop being “Dominicas”…Does the Jazz Festival only feature Jazz Artists? The idea of the World Creole Music Festival is to promote Creole music; however the inclusion of other genres is simply to attract a wider cross section of patrons to the show. The balance is music is necessary to attract a dffert section of the crowd…A few other artists will ot kill the show…If u dot like it..dont go!

    • white oak
      September 24, 2014

i do not agree with you.what u must know is that, what we consider to be our creole is not so for other countries.they have theirs and we have ours…each country these acts comes from have different “creole cultures”.so what we are having a mixture or an amalgamation of different “creole cultures”…….A.K.A…WORLD CREOLE MUSIC FESTIVAL.

blogger and Dno let please refresh yur mind about 6-7 years when Mavado decide to come to Dominica there was an outcry in dominica about the lyrics he use all the churches was against him becuase he was using the gospel song to gansta music and he lyrics to about violence and degrading women . During his performance police was backsstage and warn him if any degrading lyrics was sang he would be arrested. Movado has not change. So Dno if you are good media house you need look in archive find out the outcry against movado first performance at the newton savannah.. i see you did not do your research this time very surprise DNO becuase the story has no details about the society outcry in his first performance in Dominica

    • politricks time
      September 25, 2014

Gratel you’re soooo lame for this. The man came yrs ago, he was warned, he respected the warning, the show was a success. What is your point? This is the process that should have been used with Tommy Lee to avoid the embarrassment we caused the man and ourselves as a nation. What research should DNO have done? just to say the church monkeys didnt like that he sang “im on the rock” and he not part of their church? As grown people, we need to put the real problems into perspective and leave the petty issues aside for common sense to take care off. Mavado is a top international artiste, he has a huuuge fan base here with the youth as an artiste, whether he is on a stage here or not. Ya’ll older peple who dont suscribe to the various genres of BLACK music dont have to listen to it if you dont like it. but dont try and block the enjoyment of others who are of age and senses to enjoy what we enjoy. We dont come to your church telling yall about allu religion and preacher and pastor. we respect u and your gosphel songs.

The same Movado who was banned by authorities in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Banned by the government of Guyana

Trademark album “Gangsta for Life’ – was blamed for the stabbing of a student in Trinidad.

The Nation (Barbados) called for all radio stations to ban Mavado’s music.

    And there you have it….
The hypocrisy of the country called Dominica. A WCMF and each year the major act is a performer with less than credible credentials. Reggae should definitely now fall under the definition of Creole music. SMH!

    Read for yourself
Mavado is more known for the violence of his lyrics and as a result he has been banned from several Caribbean countries such as Guyana, St Vincent, and the Grenadines in 2008. There have been reports of violence at his concerts and claims that he “incited violence” at concerts in Guyana in 2010.
See Mavado banned for his ‘gangsta lyrics’ and Mavado accused of inciting chaos at Guyana concert
Mavado has called himself the “Gangsta for Life” after the name of one of his albums.
Mavado has had problems getting a visa to work in the U.S. in the past.
Mavado was unable to obtain a Canadian work visa so he could appear at the Montreal International Reggae Festival 08/20/11.
In April 2010, Mavado and a number of the other Jamaican murder music performers such as Beenie Man and Bounty Killer had their U.S. work visas revoked. It is surprising that Mavado is the first of this group to have his work visa restored.
Mavado was arrested on serious criminal charges in two separate cases in Jamaica in 2011, both involving assault. See Mavado entourage member shot by police dies and Mavado Arrested
Mavado was convicted on charges of assault and malicious destruction of property on May 7th, 2012. He received a total fine of JA$ 100,000 which is about $1,152 in U.S. dollars, a ridiculously low fine. Mavado is due in Court on February 12th, 2013 to face charges of assault occasioning bodily harm.
Mavado is identified as the Jamaican performer who bribed an assistant regional security officer for investigations at the U.S. embassy in Kingston, Jamaica, David J Rainsberger, to obtain a visa to work in the U.S. Rainsberger has plead guilty to the charges

    September 23, 2014

Initially the WCMF was mainly about Zouk, Cadence, Compa, Soukous, and allied genres. Now it has ‘degenerated’ into reggae and soca. Sadly Trinidad and Jamaica look down on our local musician and will never invite them or facilitate them to come to their festivals. One can’t blame them though, everybody looks for their own except the narrow minded fol;ks at the WCMF office.

    • no name
      September 24, 2014

Totally agree with you, have you ever heard of a soca/bouyon/zouk band palying at a reggae festival in Jamaica? Hell no, but you got it right the WCMF office full of narrow minded people, don’t worry everything comes to and end sometime. The good time will end for them soon.
