The establishment of a ‘Youth Enterprise’ managed by the National Youth Council is among plans put forward by the council.

First Vice President, Sharla Gabriel, made the disclosure at the Inauguration Ceremony of The NYC Executive which was held at the Fort Young Hotel earlier this week.

“We want to establish a youth enterprise managed by the National Youth Council of Dominica,” she said. “This enterprise we want to establish because we want to increase our resource base, but that is not the only reason.”

Gabriel continued, “We also want to establish this enterprise so that we can make employment available for the young people, we can get the young people back in the agriculture business and this enterprise we want to do is based on agriculture.”

According to her talking to young people from a distance will not give the council enough information, “so going out there to them can help us see a better perspective of what it is the young people in the country wants.”

She also presented the work plan for the next two years.

“We have prepared our working documents which will guide the council over the rest of the term,” Gabriel stated. “Some of the documents that we have prepared are the executive agenda, the institutional strengthening strategy and the work plan for 2015-2017.

She indicated that the  Executive agenda covers meeting all the youth groups across the island, “not just the district councils but at least if we can meet with the youth groups personally to hear their voices, to hear their needs, and to hear what it is that they want…”

Gabriel stated further that the complaints don’t always usually meet the council, “so we will be going out to them.”

This is a splendid idea. I have always felt that much more can be done to engage the young people particularly in the rural áreas. I would like to know more about this youth enterprise so that I could support it in whatever way I can. DNO could you find additional information on this activity?

Don’t really understand that. Are they going to set up a manufacturing company, to produce what? Will it be government subsidized? Can they be more clear please. I just hope this will not be a state enterprise because governments can not run a commercial business properly.

After reading the article, I still do not know what is a youth enterprise in this context. Is it a funding mechanism to assist young people who would like to be involved in agriculture? A definition of the term would be helpful.
    Thanks.
