NiPP Gospel Song Contest: season 2, slated for early December

(L-r) Julian Riviere, and Jerry Lloyd, the artists in conversation

Jerry Lloyd and the ‘Caribbean Cowboy’ Julian Riviere are featured guest artists at NiPP’s gospel song contest grand final. The church and gospel music enthusiasts are in for a rare treat of country, and soul-stirring, handclapping, and devil stomping gospel music, when two of Dominica’s most loved artists, Jerry Lloyd, and the ‘Caribbean Cowboy’, Julian Riviere, take to the main stage of the grand finale of the NiPP’s Gospel Song Contest: season 2, scheduled for December 9.

Lloyd, widely regarded as the pioneer of gospel reggae and gospelypso in Dominica and the subregion, and Riviere, the standard bearer of country gospel in the Caribbean, will be the featured guest artists at the NiPP’s gospel spectacular, which will be held at the Bill Daniel Memorial Park, Goodwill. The NiPP (National Institute for Praise Productions) made the big reveal when it officially released the names of its thirteen finalists at its recording studio on 76 King George V Street.

This ‘once in a blue moon’ collaboration between Lloyd and Riviere, will mark the very first time, in more than 40 years of ministry, the two titans in gospel music will share the same stage and perform together at a major gospel event. Each will present and perform a repertoire of infectious and authentic country and gospel music that have become staples in gospel music and Christian radio, not only in Dominica, but around the region. The two artists will also sample some new music from their upcoming works.

The Caribbean Cowboy and Jerry Lloyd will not only share the same stage, but they will also share the mic and songs in a first-time-ever duet that the NiPP has dubbed “reggae meets country.” Both artists are excited about the prospect of performing and ministering together on Saturday, Dec 9 at the grand finale of the NiPP’s Gospel Song Contest: season 2.

“It’s a real honor to have the opportunity to share the stage with Jerry and to sing some of his songs,” Riviere said. He described Lloyd as an icon, pioneer, and trail blazer in gospel music in Dominica. “I am looking forward to singing with him, to praising the Lord with him, and to bringing glory to God along with him,” he said.

And while people may not necessarily associate Lloyd with country music or country gospel “because that is not a place anybody has ever known me to be,” Lloyd is just as eager to team up with ‘the Caribbean Cowboy’. “[As] for me,” he said, “it’s going to be an honor to sing with Julien and to dabble again with country music as I did in the past. I am sure with his prowess in that department, he’ll put me up with some tips that will help me.”

The ‘Caribbean Cowboy’ Julian Riviere and Jerry Lloyd will take to the stage after the thirteen finalists in the NiPP’s Gospel Song Contest: season 2 have presented and performed their original songs. The thirteen finalists and their songs are Brandon Cuffy (I pledge allegiance), Hope Olaleru (Come), Victor Bique (Spiritual Battle), Shane Maloone (Save Me), Nyel Grove (Always and Forever), Blessing Jno Baptiste (Thankful), Kenrick Lawrence (Broken Chains), Nickisha Yearwood Leatham ‘Change’ (Broken For Your Love), Philson Christmas (Tak Tak), Janae Jackson (For You and Me), Jemima Rolle (Fire, Fire), Jenillia Richards ‘Solace’ (Remedy), and Nacheal Walsh (Daddy You’re My Everything).

Thus, competition aside, come Saturday, December 9 at 8 pm, patrons and gospel music lovers in Dominica will be treated to a rare and unforgettable night of country and gospel music across genres from afrobeat to gospel zouk, and a worship experience that is sure to thrill, inspire and

Why should you guys adopt the styles of the circular world and desire to vainly show of in gospel song competition? There will definitely be no Holy Ghost anointing, no moving of the spirit and only self gratification.

Is this a money driven endeavor? Why don’t you guys register to sing calypso for carnival and let people roll their behind? Read all the Bible and see where competition was rebuked by the Apostle Paul. “Who is Apollos, and who is Paul?” All such entertainment is just vanity from those who have FALLEN FROM THE FAITH THEY ONCE PROFESSED. Repent! And return to your first love. Don’t allow your ego to drag you back into the filth.

The word warns us to, “Come out from among them (the world) and be ye separated, says the Lord.” So I beseech you to take warning and cancel this vain gospel song competition.

This is nonsense. Were you born a Christian or a human? Christianity was not African people’s religion but it was forced on them by Europeanns. As African people. our ancestors practiced Spirituality. They had connections with the universe and nature and not an image that is supposed to be in the sky. We have come a long way from spirituality to religion, which will take us no where. How can you be in the world and not be a part of it? What is it in the world that you are not a part of, carnival? One does not have to be religious to abstain from carnival. Do some research and tell me in which history book you’ll find Jesus except the bible. The Bible is just a book, written by Europeans to keep Africans from practicing spirituality.
