No food-borne illnesses reported during Carnival season, says health officer

Calma Louis delivering remarks

Senior Environmental Health Officer, Calma Louis has announced that there were no reports of food-borne illnesses during the 2024 Carnival season.

She made the announcement during the final press conference for Mas Domnik 2024 held at the Old Mill Cultural Center on Wednesday.

The Environmental Health Department had a mandate by law to conduct food safety surveillance activities.

A team of officers from the department was out at most of the major events to conduct inspections and to provide guidance to the food vendors.

“We are pleased to also report that there were no official reports of any cases of food-borne illnesses from our visitors and patrons at the many events which they attended,” Louis revealed.

She further reported that the majority of food vendors conformed to various food standards as required by law and in keeping with the training they received during their certification.

However, she pointed out that there is still room for improvement.

Louis said the department commended the vendors for their efforts.

“The department wishes to encourage the vendors to continue to improve on the quality of the product and presentation,” she encouraged. “And wherever possible, invest in the recommended equipment such as food warmers.”

She commended all those who were directly or indirectly involved in vending during the Carnival events.

And what about all that poop I past as my behind sounded like a trumpet? So I had to call you to come and see? Unlicensed vendors with no restrooms to pee and no running water to wash their hands. Have you ever seen a street vendor washing their hands on location? No. Hands are never washed. Most people don’t get food poisoning during mass because of the amount of alcohol they consume.
