OECS concerned about arrest of BVI premier on drug conspiracy charges; opposes direct rule of BVI from London

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has noted with great concern the evolving situation in the British Virgin Islands involving the arrest of Premier Andrew Fahie on alleged drug conspiracy charges and the release of the UK Government report on the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

Like all persons charged with a criminal offense, Andrew Fahie is entitled to the presumption of innocence, procedural fairness, and a free and a fair trial within a reasonable time.

The OECS has noted the position taken by the duly elected Government of the BVI which, while welcoming the recommendations arising from the Inquiry, rejects the intention of the British Government to impose direct rule on the BVI. It is clear to us that, in principle, it is ill advised to impose direct colonial rule and the history of such imposition in the Caribbean has never delivered the desired result.

The OECS concurs with the elected representatives of the people of the BVI that abolition of Parliament with direct rule from London represents a retrograde step in the evolution of the democratic process that is inconsistent with the United Nations Proclamation of Human Rights to be free of colonial rule. The UN Declaration on granting independence to colonial countries and peoples – Resolution 1514 of 1960 is an international commitment to which Britain is itself bound.

The historical responsibility for strengthening governance in the BVI must rest on the shoulders of the elected representatives and the people of the BVI themselves. That ultimately will be the guarantee of good governance and full, transparent accountability.

We strongly urge the British Government to work with and support the elected Parliament in this process of rectification.

The OECS for its part, is willing and ready to provide technical and other support required by the BVI as an Associate Member State in addressing the governance issues that need attention.

The OECS should applaud & endorse the arrest of the BVI Premier and hope the British & Americans can clean up the entire eastern caribbean since the residents on those islands choose bribery over morality

No, they love these crooks. Have they done anything about that despot in Dominica? Don’t worry, the EU or the US will eventually do the OECS dirty work for them.

Roosevelt for sure should be very worried because he has many friends that are in trouble with the US and the only question to be answered is When will PM be given an all expense paid visit to the USA, especially Florida where some of his friends are.
We already heard that Alex Saab was a close friend of his and Saab is now in US custody and entered into a plea deal with the US.
We heard of the arrest of the BVI premier, Andrew Fahie who is in Miami and is preparing to enter into a plea deal agreement with the US where he will sell out some of his East Caribbean leader friends of his to the US for shorter jail time. I don’t know if PM Skerrit is a friend of his but here is what he said in an address in Guadeloupe on March 14, 2019: “And I am pleased to see here today, the Prime Minister of Dominica, Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit, one of our modern-day champions for regional unity. I have known Prime Minister Skerrit for a long time…” I guess PM will say “ I never knew you”.

Can somebody please tell these guys “go read their proverbs” there is so much garbage to clean in the backyard of the permanent members; the British are quite capable of looking after their own affairs; stay the “Hell” out of the affairs of an “Observer State”.

I concur with the sentiments expressed by the OECS. Colonial rule has no place in this modernity.

Having said that, I am in no way condoning the inexcusable actions of free Premier Fahie, and his accomplices. Racism is still widespread in the United Kingdom, therefore, for the British to directly rule the BVI again, it’s the re-imposition of colonisation in my opinion.

However, most of the members of the OECS, do not come to the table with clean hands. They are some of the most corrupt, discriminatory, oppressive, exclusionary, nepotistic and heartless jurisdictions.

A word to all governments of the OECS. Make sure your house is clean before verbalising about others.

Another waste of time and paper by the paper tiger cub, the OECS. The employees at these subregional bodies are forced to project the views of their populist leaders and have lost their technocratic independence. Who listens and takes notes of this garbage these guys put out about anti colonialism and territorial integrity. I’m sure the US and it’s DEA will ensure that the crook and corrupt Fahie is put away for a long time, as he and all worried leaders should be. The BVI isn’t a full member of the OECS and these clowns are quick to try to turn the conversation to anti-colonialism against Britain, even if the BVI is owned by Britain, yet they talk about territorial integrity. Isn’t Britain free to do as it sees fit with it’s own territory?. The toothless paper tiger hasn’t said a word about the horrible state of affairs in it’s member territories and puts out a waste of time letter about the BVI. I guess those boys and girls have to justify their lofty salaries. What else.

The issue here is Mr. Fahey and his alleged crimes, which is very serious. I object to colonial rule but if OECS are genuinely concerned about that they should not divert attention but ask Roosevelt Skerrit why he opened a consulate for them in Western Sahara, a country illegally occupied by Morocco. Bro one thing I don’t have time for is hypocrisy you hear.

If the OECS had their ear to the ground they would know that, at this point in time, Virgin Islanders overwhelmingly welcome Britain’s intervention as being necessary to clean up the mess that the territory has got itself into.

The writing has been on the wall for well over thirty years.
