‘Not a great turnout but a wonderful event, nonetheless.’
That’s how organizers are describing L’Histoire hord Morne Fraiser (Tales from Mt. Fraiser) which was held at the St. David bay in Castle Bruce recently.
The event was essentially a story telling night designed, according to organizers, to take the audience back to ‘an tan lontan’ (the old days) and to the exciting story telling refrain of ‘ Messieur quik! Messieur quak!’ from the likes of Damas and Sawill Challenger, Coco –T, and Cocou (Jack Francis) among others – all, well known story tellers in the area.
It was part of continuing efforts to revive love and togetherness in that community and the entire village of Castle Bruce and surroundings were invited.
Turn out was “satisfactory,” says organizer Marian Jno-Finn “but it was beautiful.” She blames the weather for a smaller than expected attendance, “but those who came by were really happy they came. Sawill and his brother Damas Challenger did what they know to do best – tell stories.”
Jno. Finn adds with poetic flair, “A wonderful ambiance was created with driftwood and kerosene lamps which was enhanced by the sound of the waves crashing on the black sand and the ever prevailing Atlantic trade winds.” She says those who came were “really happy and satisfied just to sit and enjoy the ambiance while enjoying roast breadfruit and saltfish, boiled breadnuts and lentils soup but first served, was a piece of sugar cane. Meals were served in calabash.”
Jno-Finn is thankful to all those who contributed to the success of the event.
“I am very much impressed with our young and older men who gave their love by cooking for the community. Most of the support was received from members of the community who gave their best. They gave money, sugarcane, saltfish, cucumbers, pumpkins, breadfruits, breadnuts and their time. Thanks also to the Parl Rep Johnson Drigo, The Castle Bruce Village Council, Loreen Bannis Roberts, Lazarus and Jonas Joseph – their contributions gave the biggest push,” she points out.
Jno. Finn emphasizes that inspite of the challenges the community faces, Castle Bruce community members are determined to make a positive difference.
What a wonderful idea. I love the idea of bringing the community together. keep up the good work.
I left Castle Bruce 43 years ago and I was just telling my mom that it wouldn’t make an sense for me to go back there to visit because I wouldn’t know any one nor would anyone know me. And we were naming the houses from our house to “wakama.” And although I left when I was a small child, I clearly remembered the only homes in the “wakama” area and remembered the names Sawill and Damas and neneeze. And to actually read at least two of those names in this article is amazing.
Doe panic, you can still go back man! They still love; an when you tell who you are, it will be like you never left. One Love to de Cassie Bruce massive…
