Over half a million dollars for washroom facilities in Petite Savanne Constituency

MP for Petite Savanne Dr. Kenneth Darroux

Eight contractors have been awarded for the construction of 47 washroom facilities in the villages of Bagatelle, Fond St. Jean, and Pointe Caribe to the tune of $583,000 dollars.

The contracts were signed on Friday, June 30th, 2017 in Bagatelle.

Member of Parliament for the Petite Savanne Constituency and Minister for Health and Environment, Kenneth Darroux, proclaimed that by the end of 2018, Bagatelle and Fond St. Jean will be the first communities to completely eradicate pit latrines.

“We are hoping to eliminate all pit latrines by the end of 2018, and based on the list that we have, we might maybe have just about a few people who are not going to receive this time around, but by the end of this year, I want to safely say that Bagatelle and Fond St. Jean will be the first two communities in Dominica to have completely eliminated pit latrines and I want to be the proud Pal Rep to say that by the end of this year,’ he said.

He described the value of the project as “a lot of money” considering complaints received from the public that nothing is being done for his constituency.

“As the Member of Parliament and Minister of Health, I am very, very proud … to some of us its nothing, but to you the recipients, it means a lot to you,” he said.

Darroux implored the contractors engaged to “try to do a good job” and hopes that errors made in previous washroom constructions will not be repeated.

“In fact, I have already spoken with the council and the project officer, so he will be on your back, he will be at you ever so often to ensure that you do a proper job for the person,” Darroux remarked.

He encouraged the recipients and contractors to not be hesitant in notifying the council of any unforeseen circumstances or issues.

I’m a labourite but I’m not blinded like most other supporters (especially uwp people who comment here, and a few labourites) and I think that’s ridiculous that your are spending $10,000 per washroom. You don’t need to build a fancy washroom

I thought there was no longer a Pitite Savanne but the village was transfered to belview, how come there is another chunk of money going to dig more septics and soalk aways, in a vulnerable area is it to eradicate the rest the area what Erica didn’t take to the sea?

  5. Darroux, are you actually a medical doctor, or are you another , who bought a bit of paper the same as your boss Roosevelt Skerrit? How do you a medical doctor defines “Washroom?”

The context in which you are speaking seems to indicate you are referring to “bath-rooms.” For your education only Darroux; a bath-room is a designated area in a house, a modern house containing, a bathtub, and, or shower, a sink (face basin), and toilet!

Most houses in the modern world consists of more than one bath-room. The lager the square footage the more bath-room are installed. When you hear the word “wash-house,” it may indicate a building used or equipped for the washing of clothes.

In that building you will find washing machines, and dryers. They are commonly know as coin operated laundry’s. In a home like where I live, it is equip with a laundry room where you will find a washing machine, and dryer! You are supposed to be an academic educated man, if you are your…

$11,447 per washroom, which by the way is a fancy term for toilet. I expect this includes the cost of septic tanks and water supply. There is a saying in England “where there is muck there is brass” meaning” where there is shit there is money” as is clearly the case here. People, of Bagatelle, Font St. Jean and Point Caribe I wish you a bon repo and please, don’t forget to bring your own toilet paper.

Those better be some pretty impressive washrooms. Public convenience? or for the private households?

  12. July 3, 2017

Good job Doc. It’s just sad to see that we’re approaching the end of the second decade of the 21st century and some people still have limited access to proper facilities. Good luck with the eradication project.

    • July 3, 2017

Quite sad, but the government is helping to alleviate this. They’re doing well with this as we are well on our way to completely eliminating pit latrines.

“%” — Odd to read one of your posts that does not end with an anti-Skerrit chant repeated three times, something that proves that you have no use for news except as it can be bent to your message. Washrooms are something that people need (though most people, left to their own devices, use hard work, ingenuity, and commerce to provide for their needs). “Sustainable jobs” is a leftie worship word. No job on Earth is sustainable, as climate, availability of resources, and consumer preferences change constantly. What a waste it would be if Mr. Skerrit tried harder to pander to you and offer people the false promise that no one would ever have to change jobs.
