UPDATE: Pilot dies in plane crash in Dominica

Wreckage of crashed Cessna aircraft

Dominica News Online (DNO) has received confirmation that the pilot, who was the lone occupant of the Cessna aircraft which crashed in Dominica on Thursday morning, died in the crash.

A source told DNO earlier this afternoon that photographers had been sent to the site to photograph the body before it was recovered from the wreckage.

CEO of the Dominica Air and Sea Ports Authority (DASPA), Benoit Bardouille said this morning that the plane, which was traveling from Martinique to Guadeloupe, crashed in a wooded area about 4.5 miles west of the Douglas Charles airport.

Later reports placed the site of the crash in the Syndicate area.

Bardouille said French authorities had informed DASPA that they had lost contact with the small aircraft 6 miles off Douglas Charles Airport in Dominica and needed help from Dominica in locating it.

There is absolutely NO need or urgency to have a hospital in the north east people. None.

I am reading these comments in disbelief, imagine the family off this unfortunate individual having to read that photographers were sent to the scene off the crash to take photos of the dead body.no where is any mention off a medical team for search and rescue. What if there was evidence off life in that body, wher would he be transported too,

Then again knowing the location of the crash it was nowhere close to the airport. Know the flight plan took it from Martinique to Guadeloupe, the crash site was constant with the flight plan. That aircraft was traversing through. Therefore the crash was not related to landing. Douglas Charles is in the North east; Syndicate is on the west. The aircraft would have already flown past canefield in the south, considering it departed from Martinique which is south of dominica.

My source informs me that the aircraft, reg. F-CDNF, apparently is a Socata TB20 and not a Cessna,
owned by the DSAC ( French civil aviation safety authority) for the Antilles & Guyana. Tragic but coming down in that terrain is hardly survivable.

ADMIN: Thank you. We will seek clarification. We reported it was a Cessna aircraft based on the information received from Bardouille and local authorities.

Yet those in authority does’nt see the need for an international airport and the importance of the marigot hospital. I guess they’re walking with their eyes closed.

Life is so fragile and unpredictable. My sympathy goes out to the loved ones and friends. May God give them strength.

I am so sorry that the pilot did not make it, and I which to express my sincere my sympathies to the family; but I am also very pleased that pictures of the body were not shown. There seems to be a propensity, in Dominica, for individuals to reveal every detail of accidents, particularly graphic images. This has had such an effect on me, who is not related to the victims, I can only imagine how revealing these details would affect family members of the victim of these accidents.

That is exactly why I delete them as soon they appear on my WhatsApp!

So whether it is by choice, or the body was not available, on behalf of the families who are left to mourn, and myself too, I am very pleased that DNO did not post any of these heart-wrenching images.

…..but you look at them before you delete them. Sounds to me you regret DNO not publishing pictures, if they have them in the first place.

Trying to land at either airport on the island can be a harrowing task at times. I recall flying home on a twin engine Commander Aircraft loaded to the gills and we had to circle for approximately 45 minutes, before we could land at Melville Hall. During the month of April, the Trade Winds will often exceed what’s allowed for a safe landing. Let’s wait on all foreign governments to rebuild the Marigot Hospital. At least the pilot did not suffer and die on his way to the Princess Margaret Hospital like our locals do.

May he rest in peace..it’s so sad for in a time like this people can be thinking about (vieux skerrit)..instead of what this man’s family may be feeling right now…

When news broke that a small plane had crashed in Dominica I bet you my last dollar that Skerrit prayed to his god that the pilot would be found dead in his plane just so that his sin and iniquity about the Marigot hospital did not hit him in his face

I am sorry he died but honestly speaking I prefer to hear he died in the crash than to hear he was found alive but died on the way to the PMH.

It is quite difficult flying a small aircraft with the strong winds and tropical storms in the W.I. I had flown around Dominica 24 times b fore I felt safe to touch down at Melville Hall airport. I feel sorry n my condolences to the family of the downed pilot. Craig Neal .prior Dominica vacationed. This island is the most beautiful place in the world to enjoy nature and relaxation, but you must get there safely first….
