Plans progressing for Kalinago anniversary celebrations

KalinagoPlans for the 110th anniversary celebrations of the Kalinago people are well on the way. According to Public Relations Officer of the Kalinago Indigenous Nation Developers, Emily Boyd, the celebrations are set to begin on July 4th, 2013.

Boyd said “everything is coming together right now. We have sourced the sponsors that we need. Although we still need some more sponsors, we are grateful for those that we have. Everything is set and ready for the celebrations.”

However, she indicated that lack of support from the Kalinago Parliamentary Representative Ashton Graneau is one of the major challenges faced by the committee.

“One of the challenges, which is very unfortunate is that our parliamentary representative has given us absolutely no support and that is rather unfortunate and quite depressing for us to have to deal with that” Boyd stated.

She also noted that not enough sensitization was done since many people do not know or understand the reason for the celebration.

Boyd said that she is proud of her Kalinago people since they have progressed significantly over the years.

“We have come very far to even be able to say that we have existed over all these years and through all these adversities and the mere fact that we are still there and we still exist, with a rich heritage indicates that we are going places. We are still one people and we are not forgetting who we are.”

An opening ceremony, national torch relay, and a traditional costume and “lapo cabrit” parade are some of the activities slated for the week long celebrations.

    Oh oh!!!

    I wonder why?

Could it be that his office was only informed at the last minute?

Could it be that its a political thing?

Or, could it be that some people just know how to use others?

Or could it be that the community does not even know the significance of what is being tried?

One more thing, please tell the community how much it is costing, and how much money/kind was obtained!

I this Haitian Kalinago need to know now!
