PM meets with Calibishie residents, addresses gripes about school construction

PM meeting with Calibishie residents

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has met with Calibishie residents today to address their concerns.

Residents held protest action on Sunday voicing concerns about the re-construction of the Calibishie Primary School, and the location of the playing field.

The new Calibishie Primary School is one of six schools that will be built under the China Aid Project for the reconstruction of schools post-Hurricane Maria.

“I thought the meeting went very well and I believe that the issue arose from a lack of more comprehensive consultation with the community,” Prime Minister Skerrit said during a live interview on State-Owned Radio DBS today. “As you know we have decided to build a new school for Calibishie funded by the Chinese government, works are about to start, the contractors have taken possession of the site, but I believe we should have had more consultations and more sharing of information with the wider community.”

According to him, the Ministry of Education held consultations with parents as well as teachers last year and earlier this year.

“I think it is a matter of us having the opportunity today, to share with the residents the plans for the construction of the school in terms of the site and where the school is going to be located,” he explained. “They have concerns about the playing field and where it will be located and of course a road that accesses some farm lands at the back of the school.”

Mr. Skerrit further explained that the plan was to build the school at the front of the land and the playing field at the back.

“And of course, provisions have been made for the construction of the road,” he stated.

He explained to the residents the reasons why the school is to be placed at the front and the playing field at the back.

The Prime Minister also made it clear to the residents that the playing field will not be impacted in any huge way.

“At the end of the day everybody who [was] at the meeting supported the government’s suggestion of the placement of the school and the placement of the playing field,” he revealed.

Mr. Skerrit continued, “Obviously we will need to acquire additional land to allow Calibishie to have a much bigger playing field than they currently do.”

He added, “But I think it’s just a matter of miscommunication, so the decision is that we proceed with the plans as proposed and to commence the school and to ensure that we can construct the school as quickly as possible so that the students of Calibishie who are currently utilizing the school building in Dos D’ Ane return to Calibishie sometime next year.”

Mr. Skerrit said currently the community of Calibishie is in high spirits.

Where were the Leaders of the meeting they had. All the women who was standing against it? Where was spider Web.
So everyone was “shy” to ask the pertinent questions?
Let’s see how it works out in a couple years. Eyes wide open.

Most of you bloggers and contributors to DNO make a lot of sense. But is this your objectives? Just to make sense? You all have been making sense for over 20 years and your senses produce zero results. So what’s the use? Roosevelt is not phased by a million negative statements about him. If we all really knew the type of creature this Roosevelt is we would stop commenting on his every move. Our comments are ineffective in bringing about the change we need as a people. There’s a better way and wiser method to make change happen. We must all come together. Stop insulting each other because of petty differences and let’s see the bigger picture which is Dominica and getting rid of Roosevelt Skerrit. This must be our one and only mission. The opposition has started to catch a fire and we must stand with them. We are very impressed with Lennox Linton and the labor party is very scared of him. Let’s remember him and his family. The fight for Freedom is a tough fight. We’ll be victorious.

skerrit says a lot, firstly a project is conceptualised by an architect, who has to do research into what he or she is going to conceptualise yet, “According to him, the Ministry of Education held consultations with parents as well as teachers last year and earlier this year.” who are the people conceptualising and designing those projects? presently the architect and or a representative from the firm should be the one explaining this issue. this definitely not how projects are realised, the community is also a stakeholder, where is the input of the community? plus UN Resolution 48/13, recreation is a human right. seems there is an effort by this administration to take away this right by placing buildings on recreation sites all over Dominica.

Ask those useless pass sports fellers in my village of mahaut what have become of our playing ground.
they allow politics and a foolish more black to trick them into believing that the schools ok is more important than the playing field.
Question: How is mahaut school performing in sports?
Parents are taking their children to school in town.
Had the ground been extended to its full capacity mahaut could be used a a hob for football, cricket and other sporting competitions for the western district.
With that said, let me strengthen what others have said.
This one man ruler will do nothing to improve the playing field after any school is built.
Dominican have seen all the lies by this man yet then get hypnotised by his words and dimples

  5. Wait Calibishie
    March 14, 2024

My take on that meeting was simply that the Calibishie people got conned. After doing the right thing and standing up for themselves, they all melted into putty in front of this lying, deceiving human being. Mistah is no more than a man, and they way those people appeared to be in awe would make you think the greatest thing on earth was in front of them. Calibishie got lies, side-step, deflection, and the golden tongue of the devil, and they were bamboozled. Whoever heard of old foundations being a cause not to use a location for a new building? The foundation of the house on the corner of Cork and Independence streets was very old, yet where that house was standing is a new multi-story building. As they would say in the states, “Calibishie got hosed”. Wait for the purchase of land to build the road, wait for the purchase of land to make a bigger field, wait Calibishie, because that is all you are going to be doing for the next few years.

imagine Skerrit as a project engineer ……look at how they displaying a little drawing for a community to see.
De people can hardly see what on de paper.
First off Skerrit admits of his government and area Parl rep. for de area lack of consultation with de community …..just announcing something is not consultation.
De lack of communication attitude is present on de so called international airport project as well.
De villagers should make sure that their wishes are met before they put another vote for any dlp candidate.
Are there any plans for investors to build in de immediate vicinity of wesley.?
like restaurants , supermartkets…..is Fresh market going to pen another location?
what about KFC and up scale restaurants and motels?
is de investor of de house of dark secrets opposite the NCCU on Cork street going to do similar investments around Wesley too?
it would be more encouraging to see big local investment moving to de Northeast………..

After following this story from the beginning and watching the PM’s meeting with the people vis social media on 13th March, I have drawn the conclusion that neither the minister of education nor the parl.Rep have A CLUE as to what happening under their noses. What the failed to remedy in 2 weeks the PM did in less than a morning visit? Dominica doesn’t have any minister with TRUE decision-making or taking responsibilities. They’re just figure heads.

Is the playing field just for the school or for the community? How will thr community access the playing field? Will they have to go through the school? Why cant the school have one playing field specifically for its students and the general community have one. My concern is non desirables using the playing field as a means to interfere with school children. Or it becoming a block for the local thugs to hang out at while they wait for their little girlfriend in school uniform to come outside. Skerrit you have destroyed recreation and leisure in Dominica. that is your legacy.

I heard a calibishi resident apologized for thier behavior. if the burning did not happen the gov would not respond. this tells you that this regime is afraid of its population standing seriously that is why a simple March in Roseau is met with heavy police hands. I am disgusted the we apologized to Chinese folks. I cannot go bejin do anything close to what those racist punks get away with in dominica. we are to easily pacified with crap. The SOS need to understand if Chinese come to a village they need to have 5 local reps talk to people cause we will not be pushed around. additionally if the young men arrested are not released more tires need to burn. Right now, ANY and EVERY government worker can freely and openly express their affiliation to their political party IF it is the DLP without fear. Meanwhile the law says they cannot. But no law no constitution can do or say anything about it. We see how things rolling these days. These people are pigs in palaces. They have absolutely 0 standards, except they like nice things they never had or never saw when they were growing up and will do things to get it, even if it compromises their integrity. Greed is their standard. And thats it. They all clamour around the head thief in hopes of an extra fig or dumpling. watch them

Every school that is constructed in this era of modernity should have the requisite modern amenities and facilities if the students are to excel.

There should be both a science and computer lab, a proper library, auditorium, spacious staff-room, plus others. No traditional school building will suffice.

It is imperative that the education planners convene a formal meeting with the relevant stakeholders. This informal, impromptu, coerced, tense, brief meeting with a relatively small crowd of rightfully irate villagers is woefully inadequate.

My question is: What the students and community people expect to use for recreational purposes during the interim? But, again, what do we expect from an administration comprised mostly of obdurate, myopic, self-centered birdbrains?

You are making a great point. However, you must realize that he has to assume their positions because they a weak and not up to the task that was given to them. This is well orchestrated by the leader himself. Choose weak individuals to firm his party and cabinet so her will always be all powerful. This is what the reset was all about. Getting rid of all the individuals who were there before him or came right about the time he came in. Now he is surrounded by mostly newcomer, some who he taught when he was a high school teacher and college lecturer. We need to do what’s right for our country now. Can’t head down the Haitian road.

I am always flabbergasted whenever I see people supporting and brown-nosing this narcissistic, inarticulate, nakedly lying, cartoonish character (Roosevelt). In fact, it makes me cringe.

Not only the residents of Calibishie will be severely shortchanged by this opportunistic hypocrite but the entire nation. What more proof do the people of Dominica want to know that Roosevelt is not prime minister material.

Not even his most fanatical supporter can deny that the Lying King is the least educated and intelligent prime minister in the Caribbean. Take a glance at the academic credentials of Dr. Drew (St. Kitts), Gaston Brown’s (Antigua), Comrade Ralph (SSVG), Philip J Pierre (St. Lucia), Dickson Mitchell (Grenada). This is only the Heads
    OECS.

I learnt that Roosevelt has a mere first degree. He took five years instead of the normal three years to complete it. In addition, he got much assistance as he struggled mightily .

He is still the Leader of the Commonwealth of Dominica and going strong. Nobody knows what you do. That is how insignificant you are with your two year no-meaning degree. And you realize that all these PMs you alluded to are much more handsome and attractive than Ugly Lennox Linton is, they were not High School dropouts, they never set their city on fire, their brothers never had run-ins with the police, they never went to Guyana as an uninvited guest to attend high level meetings causing an embarrassment for himself and Dominica.

Roosevelt lives by the mantra ‘Might is right’. Dominica does not have a participatory democracy. One ‘not so bright man’ runs things.

At the meeting, one of Roosevelt’s lapdog who is facially challenged, tried to embarrass a journalist from EmoNews. Every time he opened his mouth to humiliate the journalist, hogwash gushed out.

This is irrefutable evidence that Roosevelt surrounds himself with uneducated,
functionally illiterate brown-nosers. This quote immediately came to mind – A man is
known by the company he keeps.

Roosevelt, himself, is so daft that he arrogantly refuses to answer pertinent questions.
He prefers to fumble and deflect unscripted questions put to him.

Imagine, a Labour Party political stronghold had to mount a fiery road blockade to get the attention of their demigod. This satanic creature is taken the country to a bottomless pit of darkness and misery.

And in yet another classic case of putting the cart before the horse, Dear Leader proclaimed: “I thought the meeting went very well and I believe that the issue arose from a lack of more comprehensive consultation with the community.” The question is who gets the blame for not doing the “more comprehensive consultation with the community?”

Does this parl. rep ever sleep or her conscience does not allow to rest peacefully at nights?

Electoral reforms are a topical issue. There should be also be constitution reforms. There should be a recall clause in the constitution. If you consistently perform below par, the constituents should have the option of recalling their representative anytime.
