Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has stated he will not allow his dignity to be “dragged” in Dominica, whilst reiterating his position of relieving the state of his $32,000.00 monthly rental at the end of his two-year lease.
Dissent flared over a decision taken by the Cabinet of Dominica on June 9, 2020, to approve a monthly payment of EC $32,000.00 for the property from Mercury Properties Development Ltd. in Morne Daniel for the Prime Minister and his family.
Leader of the Opposition, Lennox Linton, was among many who strongly condemned the “hefty” approval and wrote to Skerrit, demanding immediate revocation.
In October, just three months in his new residence, Skerrit assured opponents of his $32,000.00 rental property that the lease will not be renewed at the end of the 2-year contract.
Reprising his position on his recent Anou Palay show on November 29, the Prime Minister stated, “I have started making plans to relieve the state of the money that it’s paying for the prime minister and I am moving to build my own residence for myself and my family so that I will have my own keys for the home and I think I will be better off that way.”
He added, “It’s unfortunate though that a prime minister would have to spend his money, whether it is borrowed money from the bank, to house the prime minister. It’s unfortunate but that’s how it is and life goes on.”
According to Skerrit, he is hoping to get out of the current accommodation paid by the treasury before the two-year lease agreement is up.
“I’m pushing with lightning speed on this,” he declared, adding, “I will not allow his dignity to be dragged on the streets of Roseau or anywhere in Dominica, so I will have to use my children money that I was saving for them to go to university at some point to build them a home for now and we will see what happens when they get to university age. So I am pushing very fast to get out of this rent and then the people’s tax money as they always say that’s paying my rent,…the government will be able to use the $32,000 as the government wishes to spend the money every month.”
The property which the prime minister is renting as his official residence at Morne Daniel is owned by Mercury Properties Development Ltd.
Some have suggested that Skerrit should relocate to his home in Vieille Case, an option which he stated that he too considered at one point. However, he said that he was concerned about the impact the distance from Roseau would have on his police security officers and their families most of whom live in Roseau and environs as well as the increased cost of providing security for the prime minister in Vieille Case.
The question is simple: why would you lease a property for two years at the cost of EC$768,000 or EC$1,536,000 over four years when it would make more sense to have a purpose-built Prime Minister’s residence? Mr Skerrit is a thief and a liar who is is defrauding the Dominican people. Whilst most people are suffering under the high cost of living, Mr Skerrit’s stomach become bigger and bigger and his face becomes more evil as he becomes more and more like his counterparts in China and Russia. But the day will come for all of these dictators, including Roosevelt Putin!

A am from Vieille. I am younger than Roosevelt Skerrit. While I was an usher at the Pentecostal Church, Skerrit as an acolyte at the Roman Catholic Church. We went to the Vieille Case Primary School. He went to PSS then to DGS. I went to BTC.
I remember Skerrit staying by his Aunt. I am not sure but probably in the little veranda room.
I was happy when Skerrit became Prime Minister but feel like he has disgraced himself since because of some of the questionable things he has been alleged to have done since becoming Prime Minister.
Skerrit already has a multi milliom dollar house in Vieille Case which he said he built for a few hundred thousand dollars. The State makes housing provision for the Head of State (President) and Head of Government (Prime Minister). Why can’t the Prime Minister’s residence at Morn Bruce be rebuilt as the official residence of the Prime Minister… Why must the Prime Minister put the state under such pressure?

A Prime Minister’s contract should be properly negotiated and established to avoid this type of embarrassment. The PM should have had clear terms of reference and responsibilities and a formal compensation package like all other prime ministers in Caricom.
It seems that none of the other Caricom prime ministers have similar complaints and concerns. His allowances and salary package should have been better handled.
The fact that after renewing his contract three times, he feels so let down is telling on the government officials who handle such matters.

To begin with, ‘Mercury Properties Development Ltd.’ is outrageously GREEDY. It’s not because you’re renting to a Prime Minister to be charging that much for rent. That $32,000.00 Monthly rental is enough to renovate the previous PM residence. Roosevelt, himself, should’ve known better than to enter a property so expensive knowing full well some people on Island doesn’t even earn that much in a year. Some doesn’t earn a fraction of that amount. No, he doesn’t/shouldn’t have to build his own home. So, he is now going to take our money AGAIN to build ANOTHER home and still ask us to pay for it. We know he lies all the time so of course he will forget what he said and ask us to pay. What is wrong with building a PRIME MINISTERS RESIDENCE? He can build as many homes as he can …. but there should be a residence that belongs to any PM.

Morne Daniel probably have more notice than Morne Bruce. That building at Morne Bruce was big enough for everyone else, it should be big enough for him; it could be renovated, it’s in a quiet area, but some people want what they want and will stop at nothing to get it. You, DNO, has conveniently omitted this additional burden on the overburdened taxpayers.

I do believe that Roosevelt Skerrit will either build or buy his own house but not necessarily in Dominica. He has accumulated enough funds, probably in the name of an off-shore company, of which he is the beneficiary that will allow him to reside in a tax-free country like Dubai. He has firm connections in the U.A.E.
He may even continue to benefit from our CBI programme if he has made a deal with an agent in that territory that entities him to a cut of every Dominican passport sold.
Remember, at the beginning of his reign he said that he wil not be te one to leave office with nothing and I do believe he will be true to his word. Roosevelt Skerrit is not the man to play second fiddle to any successor and he will depart before he is pushed, which I believe may be soon. It would be difficult to extradite him from Dubai to face the music back home.
