Prime Minister Honourable Roosevelt Skerrit will lead a delegation on a week-long visit to China to mark the occasion of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of Dominica and the People’s Republic of China.
On this visit the Dominican leader will meet with the President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang and other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China.
The Prime Minister will hold discussions with leaders of China’s top state-owned enterprises, officials of the Ministry of Commerce and China Global Advisory; and address the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2024, which will be held in Boao, South China’s Hainan Province.
Prime Minister Skerrit is accompanied by Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Melissa Poponne-Skerrit; Minister for Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security, Hon. Dr. Irving McIntyre; Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy Hon. Dr. Vince Henderson; Minister for Tourism, Hon. Denise Charles-Pemberton; Minister for Health, Wellness and Social Services, Hon. Cassanni Laville; and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernization, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Empowerment, Hon. Darron Lloyd.
Dominica’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, H.E Martin Charles, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Missi Henderson and Press Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Mrs. Dionne Durand-Smith are also part of the delegation.
In the Prime Minister’s absence from the state, Hon. Fidel Grant, Minister for Public Works, Public Utilities and Digital Economy will serve as Acting Prime Minister.
Anybody with common sense should be asking; if there’s a Chinese embassy in Dominica one of the largest in the Western Hemisphere; with an resident ambassador, along with approximately seven (700) hundred other people residing within. Why couldn’t Roosevelt and his delegation of ten bag-pipers simply go to the embassy to celebrate and party with Dominica new colonial masters?
Assuming Roosevelt and his brown paper bag-pipers or carriers did not have some ulterior motive, and even if the Chinese are secretive of what they are doing behind the fence parameter laced with almost a thousand volts of electricity, if the party was that important, they could have rented space in one of the hotels he gave money to foreigners to build which are empty always hence the money they will be spending in China for food and hotel accommodation in could be utilized in Dominica.

Tax payers will be paying a minimum of USD$225 per person per day for this unnecessary one week trip just for travel allowances. That is, USD$15,750, or nearly XCD$43,000.
Flying commercially, the basic economy fare will cost a minimum of XCD$13,000 per person, or at least XCD$130,000 for the entire over-bloated delegation. Of course, that is an extremely conservative figure since most likely, they will not be travelling commercially, and even if they are travelling commercially, they are unlikely to utilize basic economy fare.
And of course, we will have to add to that the temporary salary increase that Mr. Grant will get in his capacity as acting PM.
It becomes more obvious each day that this SELF-SERVING government is extremely insensitive to the plight and the needs of the people of Dominica.
A government that is engaging is situations that they cannot get themselves out of. All of them are US citizens or residents – I hope they make sure that they do not come back home.

Dominica is in dire financial straits, no doubt about this. This trip with this many Cabinet deadbeats, will add significantly to the ever ballooning national debt.
