Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has expressed sadness and concern following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake which struck Haiti on Saturday morning.
According to media reports, the earthquake has left several hundreds dead.
The prime minister made the statement through a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon.
“I am saddened and concerned following the 7.2-magnitude earthquake which struck near Haiti,” he said. “According to initial reports, there are likely high casualties and widespread damage.”
He continued, “We are reminded of the 7.0-magnitude earthquake which struck Haiti in 2010 and left over 300 000 people dead.”
Prime Minister Skerrit said his government offers their support and solidarity to the Haitian people, currently dealing with this latest disaster and to our Haitian brothers and sisters resident in Dominica.
“The Government of Dominica will continue to monitor, as the scale of this tragedy becomes clearer.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti,” he stated.
Meantime, BBC News reported that 1300 people have died and many more are injured with the death toll expected to rise in the coming days.
The epicentre of Saturday’s quake was about 12km (7.5 miles) from the town of Saint-Louis du Sud, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The tremor was felt in the densely-populated capital of Port-au-Prince, some 125km away, and in neighbouring countries.
Haiti is still recovering from a devastating 2010 earthquake.

Everything he touches crumbles to the ground. Lingering tremors include China, Venezuela, Morocco, Cuba as well as some Caribbean islands.

Talking about the earthquake and people of Haiti? I will tell you this much, that I have prayed for these people; especially the righteous ones. But we Dominicans don’t even know where the pieces are from all the fragments of our dignity which have been shattered by EARTHQUAKE SKERITT. Strangers of different peoples are here in my homeland working and my fellow countrymen remain unemployed. Does that bother you? Are you concerned about this earthquake that’s causing havoc In Dominica? When this earthquake is confined to its long awaited chamber, then Dominicans will begin to put their lives back together and breathe freely again. I’m not directly affected by this govt. In anyway. But I’m concerned about my country.

Skerrit is a damn hypocrite who only concerned about his personal success and survival. So hypocrite is that man that I wonder if he would mind another Maria or natural disaster that he could once again use for his political advantage since we all know that he must hide behind his office so he won’t have to answer to y $4+ billion dollars that missing. Trust me if that hypocrite called Skerrit does not get a natural disaster to bail him out, expect him to create one like he used covid-19 to keep block Lennox from taking the information out.
Way off topic. Get a hold of yourself and do not allow anger to get the better of you. Let’s not hate Skerrit; this a destructive emotion. If we stay focus and not get emotional and out of control we can get this administration out of office and bring Dominica back on the track to recovery and greatness.

We will stop ‘hating’ him as soon as he has left the country and we can assess the real damage this man has done over his years in power. Here is him expressing concern and empathy for the people of Haiti. Nothing is wrong with that at face value. But, in Dominica, thousands are desperately in need of financial protection. Their present realities have been further exacerbated by the necessary measures recently put in place by the government.
Mr. Skerrit and his immediate family live in utopia. This has made him insensitive to the sufferings of the majority of ordinary Dominicans. Can a man whose family gets approximately $90 000 per month in rent, security, two salaries, allowances, perks relate to the hardships of a commoner? Mr. Skerrit is a shameless SADIST completely oblivious to the pains of his fellow Dominicans.

This is what I’ve been trying to convey to DNO. Everything that Mr. Skerrit does or utters DNO publishes even if it is inconsequential. It makes one wonders if this media house is on Mr. Skerrit’s payroll.
DNO this is just a suggestion. Try to publish issues that are adversely affecting a wide cross section of the community or those issues that would alleviate suffering and elevate the dispossessed
Here is one example. Many people who are completely innocent are placed in the holding cells of police stations. These cells are not even fit to hold pigs or any other animals. Human feces and urine are all over these cells. The inhalation of this overly offensive odor is deleterious to the health of any human being. Write about this and other aberrations.
