Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has sent an urgent appeal to China to utilise its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to back the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) proposal for the deployment of an international security force to restore peace and stability in Haiti.
Skerrit, who is also the chairman of CARICOM, a 16-member regional integration grouping, addressed the 8th session of consultations between China and Caribbean countries with diplomatic relations with China on Friday and stated unequivocally that alleviating Haiti’s plight is a top priority for him.
“As you’re aware, Haiti is experiencing a security and humanitarian crisis; a crisis which requires the care and concern of all nations,” he declared.
“In order to usher a likely solution to the crisis, there will be a need for a Security Council resolution. We are therefore requesting the fullest support and cooperation of China as a permanent member of Security Council In advancing this resolution,” Skerrit added.
He acknowledged that China, the second largest donor to the UN Security Council’s peacekeeping force, has previously provided “steadfast support” for all resolutions on Haiti and deployed peacekeeping personnel in the nation.
The Prime minister urged the Asian nation to once again provide such assistance, emphasising that “Haiti needs all of us.”
“I have no doubt that our friends, the People’s Republic [of] China, will provide that level of support that Haiti requires now from us,” the Dominican leader said. “ And so we’ll continue to work together, as CARICOM has decided to lead the charge in finding a solution and mobilizing global efforts towards assisting our brothers and sisters in Haiti.”
During the consultation on Friday, China’s Assistant Foreign Minister, Hua Chunying, addressed the Haiti crisis, saying that the government is well aware of the region’s worries.
“I would like to keep in close contact with the co-chair to see how we can help and how we can work together to bring security and stability back to Haiti, the sister nation in the CARICOM,” she said.
Cai Wei, Director-General of the Foreign Ministry’s Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, recently stated similar comments to Caribbean Journalists in Beijing, China.
He said despite the fact that Haiti has no formal diplomatic links with the PRC, but rather with Taiwan, the current situation in the country has caught the attention of Chin.
He said China is eager to help “alleviate the difficulties of Haiti” where possible, pointing out that China had previously gone to Haiti’s rescue, referring to its humanitarian assistance following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in 2010.
Conditions in Haiti are deteriorating rapidly amid widespread hunger, gang violence, school closures and an ongoing cholera epidemic – with children, especially girls, particularly at risk, Plan International warns.
Testimonies gathered by Plan International in Haiti’s South East department paint a bleak picture of the human cost of Haiti’s political crisis – which has fueled a sharp rise in living costs among already impoverished families.
Gang violence has been disrupting supply chains across the country, limiting access to food and making it difficult for communities to reach schools and hospitals.
The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that about five million people in Haiti – almost half the population – are facing acute hunger right now.
What China does is China business to China’s benefit. You think they never considered Haiti?
Why women braid their hair? the braided hair looks so much more decent than the head of natural hair which takes so much more effort and time that we don’t have in our modern world. I love natural hair but let’s be honest. appearance matter a lot
Wrong forum, but we all get lost sometimes.
Haiti has been a perennial problem for eons. No nation or group of nations can truly solve the economic, social and political problems of Haiti but Haitians themselves.
Haiti reminds me of LIAT. No amount of money pumped into the present situation can save it. Stability and progress can only be achieved by the collect efforts of its citizens.
The wanton corruption, greed, selfishness, and the dictatorial tendencies have to be brought to an end. The proverbial ball is in the court of the average Haitian person.
