Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said his government is continuing in its efforts towards providing care for the elderly on the island. His comment came during a visit to Grotto Home for the Homeless and the Dominica Infirmary where he met with the board of directors this week.
According to him, the objective is to observe what is being done at these institutes, what the government is doing to finance the facilities and management of the facilities, and to come up with a solution to allow for better care provided to the residents of the Grotto Home and Dominica Infirmary.
“What I have done is to put the Ministry of Social Services in direct contact with them, so they will be meeting to go through the specific details and the guidelines I have given and to make some firm recommendations on how the government can assist further, to ensure that the staff can work at an optimal level,” Skerrit said.
He continued, “The requests and concerns are not things that cannot be dealt with, just a matter of working on the details and certainly I believe from our visit both the grotto home and the infirmary will be in a better position to provide the optimal care for the residents.”
The prime minister commended the management and board of directors of both Grotto Home for the Homeless and the Infirmary for doing a fantastic job.
“The place is clean, residents are happy and well taken care of, their meals are well prepared…,” Skerrit stated.
He plans to visit other such homes which include ‘The House of Hope’ to address the challenges there in regards to the physical structure of the building among other issues.

This is a very pregnant statement that highlights the sorry state of affairs in a country led by a one-man band. Does everything have to be I, I, I? What happened to the National Advisory Council that Minister of State in the Ministry of Health Dr. Williams recently announced the formation of to make recommendations for elderlies? You mean the Dominica Infirmary that has operated before this man was even born and the Grotto Home that has been operational since he was in pre-school have never been in direct contact with the Ministry of Social Services? If anything, this statement reflects very badly on a gov’t that has been in office for 20 plus years.
Couple of glaring things I have deduced from Roosevelt’s remarks. There is no “we” in this braggart. Only one man is perfect and omniscient, a fool. Roosevelt is a fool.
Roosevelt is not a rookie in politics. However, he sounds like a political neophyte. Not having the right synergies in place to help these most vulnerable folks shows he badly lacks discernment.
This is incontrovertible evidence as to the reason Dominica is languishing in the cellar position in the OECS in terms of economic, social and infrastructural development. Roosevelt is intellectually incapable of competently managing the country’s affairs. This guy is just an opportunistic bandit. That’s all he is.

$300 is insufficient for me to take one doctors visit, but alas you have no comprehension of figures. My brother gets $300.00 a month, and it can’t buy him an average plastic of groceries, i still have to help him out for 25 out of the 30/31 days in a month.

The government (NB whichever party wins) has a lot of responsibilities – in the country. They have to raise funds to then use for Health, Education, paying public servants, and all the other public non-income bearing entities.
You should be pleased that some $300.00 was made available to the elderly because many of you young people abandoned them and think that someone has to take care of them.
