Police search for tuberculosis patients who walk out of hospital

Health officials at the news conference. Dr. McIntyre is 3rd from left

Police are in search of two Haitian nationals who left the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital while being treated for Tuberculosis (TB).

This information was according to Health Minister, Dr. Irving McIntyre, who was addressing a press conference recently.

Dominica News Online (DNO) understands that they left the hospital between 8:00 pm on the 9th February and 7:00 am on the 10th February 2020.

“There were two Haitian nationals in isolation on the ward… I don’t think that they discharged themselves. If anything, we found out that they left. So, it wasn’t like they were going to the nurse and get a discharge from the hospital; we would not allow this,” he said. “Two of them absconded and that information was relayed to the authorities. The search began for them and it’s still ongoing.”

According to McIntyre, there are special protocols in regard to this.

“We know exactly when these patients get discharged and when they get discharged, we send them out to the district and then the district health team is aware of where these patients are, so the contact tracing can go on and then the treatment can continue,” he stated.

Meantime, according to the health minister, some unofficial sources said that the Haitians could have left the island.

The foolery which has emanated from the Minister of Health (MOH) suggest that he lacks the basic medical knowledge to continue in this post. This could result from (a) sub-optimal training, and/or (b) The MOH was not the brightest candle in the pack. Either way, I suggest that he be removed from this position to avoid further embarrassment to D/CA.
He says with Coronavirus (1) D/CA has things under control; The world at large is still struggling with the outbreak, (2) Outlines a plan to protect D/CA from the virus, yet he fails to mention the first basic step to contain a contagious disease, that is quarantine and he makes no mention of guarding the entry ports to the country, (3) D/ca is the first country in the Caribbean to test for the Corona virus, only to recant the statement 2 days later, (4) He claims that there is no TB outbreak in D/ca, only to recant 11 days later and (5) he and the CMO are engaged in the criminal act of releasing infectious TB cases into the community!

Haiti is plagued with tuberculosis; the health department will never succeed with the way they operate. the state should make it mandatory that every Haitian national in this country should be test for TB and Aids whether they have permission or not. A special ID should be given to them which they should be responsible for paying for. This is to certify that they are not contaminated whilst they came here for work the State is obligated to know their health status, if they fail to comply they should be deported, irrespective even if they are from Caricom, remember we have a work force to protect. We can only accommodate healthy people and not sickly people; Dominica is not a quarantine country.

That is a heavily dangerous post. Marginalizing people with whom we share the same history with. The Haitian people have suffered enough, and Dominica should not participate in criminalizing them.

TB is common in the Caribbean; it is not restricted to Haiti. And, your statement about they being tested for AIDS is even more dangerous. That stigma is attached to the Haitian people based on misinformation and prejudice.

The minister of Health does not have a clue about what he is saying. The statement below suggests that the Minister is saying that a person with TB is always infectious….read the statement!!!
“We know exactly when these patients get discharged and when they get discharged, we send them out to the district and then the district health team is aware of where these patients are, so the contact tracing can go on and then the treatment can continue,” he stated.

He speaks about ‘contact tracing’ that is been able to identify the persons with whom the infected entity may have come into contact. It would be logical to assume then that the hospital is discharging patients who are still infectious! a very dangerous practice. Why isolate patients whom you are going to liberate to the general public whilst they are still infectious? We know that generally patients with active TB who have been appropriately treated for at least two weeks are no longer infectious, so no need for contact…

I suppose nothing; not tsunami, fire, hurricane or TB, was going to prevent the two individuals from playing Mas!!!

I pray they exercise an abundance of caution in order to avoid putting themselves in further peril and the general public at risk.

This is some serious “sheet” if you ask me! They did not check out themselves but left the hospital and may have left the island? What kind of spin, BS is that? Bro they check themselves out and hulled “hass”. I hope they not in a carnival band coughing, hacking and breathing in people face. I tell allu pray for us if just one person come in our country with corona. That government MUST GO soon.

This administration has turned this island into a complete failed State laughing stock in the Caribbean! Poor Dominica, the land where incompetence is god and king! And of all the great medical doctors that my land has produced, the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital is the best name we could come up with? Could not honour one of our late great doctors!? Wey, wey, wey Dominica, why do your children hate you so and love all foreigners over you?

    Imagine if they had Coronavirus….

    • February 25, 2020

Well folks will just come down with Corona..Sadly,,not the one from Mexico that will get them drunk,,it’s the one from gina that kills..
You know,, how often we want to do what’s right in our eyes and expect to remain in our comfort zone nice and easy,,forgetting that there’s a GOD above who said that,There will be no rest to the wicked,,he or she will be like the waves on the sea shore..I’ve never gone to the beach and saw no waves on the shore even when the sea is most calm.GOD has used diverse diseases in past time to deal with mankind and HE can certainly do it again today..Like our little saying goes,,time changes so do men,,I’ve never heard so do GOD.In contrast it’s GOD changes not,,HE’s the same yesterday, today and forever…Again,HE made good and evil and HE could use any at HIS own pleasure to bring about what so ever HE desires..The clay can’t tell the potter what to do with it..We had no say in who our mother or father should be..
Do not forget GOD in these times…

They did not discharge themselves they say. Of course they did not and this is purely an academically argument by the authorities to absolve themselves from any blame. Instead they should admit that the security arrangements are inadequate to keep people with infectious diseases secure. They probably had already paid some people smuggler to take them to Guarda that night and did not want to miss the boat. Our borders are like a sieve with a hole in it. Nobody saying anything because of the money to be made and people who are not involve but know do not say anything because they are too afraid for their life.

The police them need to follow the same highway Skerrit took when he brought them here; who knows they might find them along the way waiting on the next train. I just can’t understand how a national leader could be so irresponsible to bring down so many Haitians that are frankly not in good health.

It’s probably a coincidence that he had to fraudulently impose the title of doc to his bad legacy! :?:

Square pegs in round holes!!! Was that story read over before it was posted? Is the minister accusing someone or people of kidnapping and harm g the sick patients? According to him, “I don’t think they discharged themselves…….”. Well Mr Minister, if they didn’t discharge themselves and the hospital care providers didn’t discharge them were they kidnapped? We’re they killed on the hospital compound and disposed of there to? I understand why Skerrit is fearful of you folks addressing the media. What message are you sending? Please go back and speak to the media and say what you really meant.
