STATEMENT: College president concerned about the potential for miseducating a generation of youth

Dr. Donald Peters, president of the DSC

A fire occurs at a dwelling house in St. Aroment, Dominica, and not only it is national news but a group of two Dominicans living in the US have formed an organization and are calling on the prime minister of the country to investigate the fire. Is that the role of a leader of our country?

Of course not, that is the function of the Fire and Police services.

But over the past seven years, since Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit became this country’s prime minister, there has been a relentless attack both on his work as prime minister and on his character. This attack is not by the masses, because twice the majority of citizens elected him to be their leader, the second time in 2009 by the largest majority in a national election in the history of Dominica.

The attackers are few and they are about 29 in total and include disc jockeys, people who give themselves titles such as “investigative journalist” wannabe PMs, men who cry on national TV, disgruntled unemployed callers to the radio, a frustrated businessman and now my friend from Maryland, with yet another club, the Coalition in Defense of Democracy (CDD) in Dominica, have joined the group.

While they talk and talk and talk, the PM is quietly developing the country – new road systems, universal education, new welfare caring programs, economic growth, but now he must investigate fires!

As an educator I would like to have given these gentlemen some credibility, perhaps to see if there is anything that college students could learn from them, after all they have been attacking the PM and following the PM’s work for the last ten years. Unfortunately, I don’t know where to begin because I don’t know what the objective of that group is.

In their on-air verbiage they express their objective as bringing truth,  justice  and democracy  and “light to Dominica; somewhere in that objective also is an obsession to convince  us that the PM own or does not own “the villas”.

Now here is where students and all of us get confused by the lessons those gentlemen want to teach us.

Democracy – First, the last time I checked, Dominica is listed by the UN and western super powers as a democracy. Our constitution, which is what defines our democracy, is alive and well. There is an independent judiciary, another requirement of a democracy and there is a parliament (legislative body) elected by the people in open and free elections. In a strange irony, that democracy is precisely what gives the group the freedom to spend their entire life talking about the PM on radio.

Shedding Light and Truth – The second objective is to shed light and the truth to Dominicans. The problem with this objective is that they want us to adopt “their truth” and” their light”. They complain that the PM own villas; there exist a legal document called a deed which says that those very villas are owned by someone else. I guess the lesson to us is to ignore the laws of the land, but herein lays the problem: what are the tenets of democracy or justice that they would like  us to learn when they ignore the very laws and institutions of democracy? The Labour Party won the 2009 general election, 18-3; the talkers claimed that there was fraud in the election (the election was actually observed by two international bodies who declared the election free and fair). The UWP nevertheless went ahead and challenged the election results in court, which is the democratic thing to do. All of the fraud claims were thrown out. The court allowed one of the charges relating to the PM citizenship to move forward and guess what? The investigative journalist and his band of complainers have already tried the case on Q95. Is this the kind of democracy they are teaching? Should a case that is in litigation be discussed in the public domain? Could anyone get a fair trial in that kind of environment where his/her case is being discussed live on the radio?

What concerns me is that at a time when the nation is beginning to move its people towards access to higher education with the PM’s goal of one college graduate per household by 2015, so that our people will have the tools they need to compete in the global village and bring our country to developing nation status, we find a disgruntled group of misguided Dominicans spending their time mis-educating people with non-scientific, poorly researched tales and stories.

What is even more interesting is that they believe they are the moral compass of the nation and is helping the country, when in fact all they do is talk, most of them are unemployed. Shakespeare best describes their stories  when he says “it is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”  (Macbeth Act V Scene V) .Education it seems teaches us that the pages of history and literature are filled with people like those.

Dominica needs its entire population to be educated in order to build our economies. It would be great if those amongst the talking group with any formal education or knowledge in any field come teach us in a formal setting where learning can take place. Living in Maryland criticizing Dominica’s national Police Force, or its judiciary is not how we educate our people.

This is the precise problem within the influential community in our society today. Not just Dr.C. Peters but many other people who we consider influential because of their profession or position and the neutrality and exemplary behavior that is expected of them.

It is apparent that this group of people who in the absence of good governance and(particularly in our case in Dominica with the increase of widespread corruption within government) are suppose to speak out publicly against such issues. Instead they choose not to simply for reasons linked to short term gains and what I consider a lack of understanding on their part to appreciate the influence of their civic duties.

I am again saying that those of you with the PHD come back home (from yoru comfort zone) and do some volunteer work to assist in the social development of our youths. Not at the college but we going to reach out to our youths who are hurting and have turned to violent behaviour and drugs etc. For the love of country – Dominica – I challenge you to come and I will definitely join you since my heart goes out to those on the streets etc and the young undirected youths.

CDD for 2011 – put this as one of your goals . Eveyone we can assist , Our father will be pleased with us.

Regarding the following excerpts, I do agree with the writer whether or not I am a supporter of the DLP or UWP. There has been character assassinations – the kind of insults that are hurled at the man moreso on this forum. Can you deny that? Does that mean I am singing for some kind of supper? I am a very independent person not begging anyone for supper.

This above I totally agree if we were not democratic, no one who spoke whole day on the talk shows and only about the PM would not have been able to do so in an undemocratice setting. whether I voted Blue, Red, Green, Khaki, Yellow, I agree with that view of the writer. Well apparently now I have graduated to singing for my breakfast. That does not matter. We have to call right right and wrong wrong..

“While they talk and talk and talk, the PM is quietly developing the country – new road systems, universal education, new welfare caring programs, economic growth, but now he must investigate fires”

I again beg now to sing for my lunch. Too much talking yes too much talking.. we need some action plan… Can the PM alone do everything? What are the PS and all the other employees there to do? We each have our part to play in the country’s development.. Too much talk and talk. Some of the Able bodied men/women who are only usign their tongues unwisely to just talk and talk, we need to get some merchants to donate some boots and let us do some hard work to help the Government in fixing, clearing, cleaning, beautifying our country. The government cannot and do not have the funding to do everything we would like done in our country. Where have the volunteerism attitud e gone? The could main attitude? Before we talk let us do some form of community work like help to repair someone home or our streets etc. We can donate some funds too . Did not our Heavenly Father say it is better to give than to receive and “give and it will come back to you” I am seeing a lot of infrastructural developments here there and everywhere and a lot of returnees have remarked of the developments that is happenning which some of us are blind to even notice. We are so busy coloring everyone and playing politics one year after the general Election. We do not seem to know what is happenning around us , in the wider world and we seem not to know that we are in a period of economic depression. We need to thank our Father for waht we have achieved so far, even protecting us in the just concluded “Huricane season” Finally if the PM has to investigate the fire, then there is no need to have the Fire Service Chief anymore. Set him afire and PM sit in his chair and also drive the Fire truck.

I can go on and on but Admin may not permit me. Ah Malgares sah please stop this for Our Fathers sake. Let us love one another and cticise constructively giving suggestions and alternatives.

All the best readers for 2011..

    January 4, 2011

Dr. Peters, I wonder why you decided to make a statement on this issue. Has this issue bothered you that much that you saw it fit to write. I was awaiting a statement from you after the protest at the Dominica State College. Instead you hid yourself in your office and denied the students from meeting with their President. People said that you have joined the merry gang of singers; I would think not; since you ought to be an independent PhD; independent thinker who will not mix his words for a mere salary. However, Dr. Peter, I wish you would use your PhD to educate others on the truths and corruption that exist in this country. Yes, we have seen things happening, never before have we had night landing, never before have we seen international cricket played in Dominica; this is development; but we should not cover the corruption that is plain in site with all the development. Please Dr. Peter, show your might – be the educator that you are and stop putting your reputation and integrity on the bandwagon of all those we see singing for their supper. I would not like to think that you are one of them. You seem to be an experienced man, one who has given most of his adult life working as an educator; I would not expect that you are singing for any super, breakfast or lunch; since you should be near retirement.

I hope the next time we hear from you, you will give a better account of yourself.

    God Bless you sir.

Dr. Carter G Woodson in his book “THE MIS-EDUCATION OF THE NEGRO”(Should be required reading in all Secondary School English courses), published in 1939 wrote and I quote WHEN YOU CONTROL A MAN”S THINKING, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HIS ACTIONS.YOU DO NOT HAVE TO TELL HIM TO STAND HERE OR GO YONDER. HE WILL FIND HUIS PROPER PLACE AND STAY IN IT. YOU DO NOT NEED TO SEND HIM TO THE BACK DOOR. HE WILL GO WITHOUT BEING TOLD. IN FACT, IF THERE IS NO BACK DOOR, HE WILL CUT ONE FOR HIS SPECIAL BENEFIT. HIS EDUCATION MAKES IT NECESSARY “!!!!
Dr. Peters, unfortunately, you have just proven yourself to be a PRIME EXAMPLE OF THE “MIS-EDUCATED NEGRO”

It is rather unfortunate that after spending so many years overseas educating yourself, rather than come home and contribute to the Economic & Educational growth of our Country, you have chosen to join the ranks of the other “MIS-EDUCATED NEGROS” whose sole aim is to jump on the “CORRUPTION BAND WAGON”and “SING FOR YOUR SUPPER”
    What a shame !!!!!

Donald, I thought in your opening statement you said you did not know what the objectives of the 20 persons who want to cry down Skerrit were. So why are you numbering them in the other paragraphs? Also how comes you know exactly how many persons formed the latest Diaspora group? If you mentioned 20 people then you cannot check, because the UWP has more than that. So clearly you are just another person with an axe to grind. Just maybe you think that because you say you have a PhD which clearly means Perhaps Has Debt or Petticoat Hanging Down we are as dumb as you? Brother you better clear the way.

Would like some answers as the definition of “singing for your supper”? Should you people be so disrespectful? So one “sings for his/her supper” if she/he agrees with another opinion? Or in order not to sing for your supper then you must never agree with anyone and be cantankerous and always look for excuses not to agree with anyone?. Even the so called foolish man out there sometimes say something that is real and true.

Your words are a typical example of lowly minds and mentality. Nothing good to say as usual? Then say nothing! Your evil words are nothing more than wickedness of the tongue – the power of the tongue and envy and envy is one of the deadliest sins.
I hope that you had responsible parents who honored their obligations and nurtured you appropriately and that you are a model Dominican. The pot always calls the kettle black.
On the other hand, if you were nurtured appropriately and possess godliness, you would not make such a demeaning statement.
I also hope that you are not a Catholic Christian. If you are, I am directing you straight to the Holy Water to wash out your mouth, cleanse it of all imperfections, impurities and wickedness and ask God for forgiveness for your ungodly words. Are you not aware that one day you will pay for your words as imbedded in your evil heart and mind? God knows your heart.
Dr. Peters did well for one who came from humble and poor beginnings. He is one to be commended and emulated. You should sing his praises, follow his example and encourage others, specifically the youth to do likewise.

Why can’t we have real men in Dominica, that’s so few and rare. Men with testicular fortitude that can stand on their own, men who are brave and not afraid of the truth.

Common Peters, I’m really disappointed in you. Not because you don’t write what I want to hear, but because loose respect for your self and position, you deliberately throw away all credibility you ever had.

I think it would be in your best interest to resign from your position, enroll at UWI for Dr. F. Sevrin to educate you.

Donald Peters, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at State University of New York at Plattsburg.
    Peters resigns from PSU
    22 May 2002
    Peters resigns from PSU

PLATTSBURGH – Dr. Donald Peters, who recently labeled three Plattsburgh State faculty members racists, has resigned.
According to an e-mail Monday to the Faculty Senate Executive Committee from President Dr. Horace Judson, Peters resigned May 15, one day after his charges of racism against Dr. Paul Johnston, Dr. Mark Cohen and Dr. Kathleen Whittier were reported in the Press-Republican.

The Press-Republican has learned of racism-related controversies at three of the last five schools where Peters worked, though colleagues at the two other institutions praised him.
Peters was University of Minnesota director of health services from 1988-91 and assistant vice president for student affairs from 1991-93.

Peters went to the University of Mississippi, where he was vice chancellor for student affairs and assistant professor from 1993-95.

Peters worked from late 1995 to early 1996 as vice president for student affairs and associate provost for enrollment at Wright State University, where he faced conflict-of-interest charges when he allegedly had subordinates hire two of his friends.
The matter was dropped when he agreed to resign.
Peters later referred to the school as “White State University” and said he had been charged because the minority president who hired him was under attack from “a group of people.”
After Wright University, Peters took a position as Bermuda College’s vice president for academic and student affairs from 1996-2000.

And in a Bermuda Sun article, Peters said politics forced him to leave after he recommended “deadweight” staff be dismissed.
“They either have to buy you out or fire you for cause,” Green said.”They weren’t going to fire him, so they quietly negotiated and bought him out.”
Green said Peters had some good ideas but tried to get people who weren’t his fans fired.
He likes to play the race card, she said.
“He had an enemies list and accused me of being head of the conspiracy to get rid of him,” she said.”There was never any conspiracy.”
Next, Judson brought Peters to Plattsburgh State as vice president for students affairs and enrollment management, even though a Search Committee didn’t recommend him.

“Peters has made a career of getting payments to leave,” Cohen said.
A DOMINICA-born lecturer at the Bermuda College, Vice President Dr Donald Peters, is at the centre of controversy at the institution involving contract renewal and his replacement by a native educator.
Discord arose after it was revealed that Dr Peters was being challenged by Bermudian Larita Alford, who is currently working in the United States.

Donald Peters in NY race controversy
The controversial former vice-president of Bermuda College has resigned from his post at a US university following allegations of racism he made about staff, The Royal Gazette has learned.
Outspoken Dr. Donald Peters told last night how he resigned his post on Friday after publicly claiming that five faculty members at Plattsburgh State University in New York were blatantly racist.

Dr. Peters, who courted controversy while vice president of Bermuda College until the summer of 2000, said he regretted nothing and would do the same thing all over again.
He said: “Plattsburgh is a weird place. The university is a great place and most of the people are fine, but there is a group of people bent on going right at the president. He’s a black man.
“When he hired me, that was the last straw.During the last two years they have been doing everything possible to distract us from our work.

Dr. Peters concluded: “But the s*** hit the fan last Wednesday.”
Dr. Peters said he actually held a press conference with a reporter in the “upstate” town because he wanted everyone to hear his complaints, saying: “I said I was ashamed to work at a university like this, and so I resigned.”
He said at the time of the press conference he had threatened to resign if no one at the college spoke out against the members of staff he named as allegedly being racist. No one came forward, so he stepped down on Friday.
He added: “I have not yet called the international press because I’m waiting to see if I get paid or not.I would do it all again.I don’t believe I have done anything wrong. The president has a lot of tolerance, but I won’t take any of this crap.I have tried to do my best, but trouble follows me everywhere I go.”
Dr. Peters described his resignation as “symbolic” and said he had already been considering what to do with his career next.He said: “I will be out for a while.I will go to another university or go home (to Dominica) and be a Prime Minister. Right now, I’m taking it easy.”
However, Dr. Peters said he would not remain quiet.
He threatened: “If I don’t get money, the chancellor and the governor are coming down with me.This is racism… I’m being harassed….I know the chancellor is a lot smarter than that.”
News broke in Plattsburgh yesterday of Dr. Peters’ resignation, although his accusations of racism against three faculty members became public last week.College president Dr. Judson has refused to talk to the The Press-Republican newspaper, and last night told The Royal Gazette that he had “nothing to add” to Dr. Peters’ comments. However, Dr. Peters has not drawn a great deal of sympathy from people in the small community. An editorial comment piece in The Press-Republican after his claims were disclosed criticised Dr. Peters for naming three of his alleged attackers but being vague about the other two.
And it said that the latest controversy in his life had nothing to do with racism, but everything to do with in-house politics.
It said: “Peters’ comments are too insidious to leave alone.
“Even though reaction from colleagues, students and alumni has been swift and strong in its defence of the three faculty members and its rebuke of Peters, the damage has been done.I suspect Peters made a calculated decision when he talked to a reporter.
“He offered no evidence of racism – likely because it only exists in the recesses of his troubled mind – because he knew the claim alone is tantamount to guilt, in the minds of many.”This incident is an echo of a similar outcry during Dr. Peters’ reign at Bermuda College in 1999, when he is reported to have called white colleague a racist and white supremacist.
He was given a “severe reprimand” by the college’s ruling board and was forced to apologise for the claims.
Dr. Peters’ also accused of sexual and racial discrimination after passing over a senior lecturer while making an appointment for a top job at the College, resulting in a $100,000 out of court settlement.
But the Plattsburgh newspaper also claimed that Dr. Peters had encountered a similar race-related controversy in another post.
It reported how he worked from late 1996 to early 1996 as vice president for student affairs at Wright State University, where he faced conflict of interest charges after he allegedly had subordinates hire two of his friends.
The matter was dropped when he agreed to resign.
Dr. Peters is later said to have referred to the school as White State University and said he had been charged because the minority president who hired him was under attack from a group of people.

Interesting! Very interesting. Dr. Peters what say you? Those who have eyes to see let them see!! Another discredited Skerritt propagandists.. Soon Skerritt will line all of all you big men against a wall and whip you, and he would be within his rights (Sarcasm) All you cannot tell me, big men like all you, that took so much more schooling than Skerritt carrying water in a borrie for the little bad boy.. What a disgrace? I cannot understand the reasoning and the value system behind that.. How scandalous, disgusting and shameful, but it seems you guys and gals have no shame..

Thanks for posting these excerpts. I was wondering about his history as a tertiary education instructor and administrator and these words give some insight into his professional life.

A few things come to mind when I read through the excerpts: Dr. Peters may be paranoid or insecure about his identity as black man. There is no coincidence that the idea racism has followed him from school to school to school. I was educated in one of the southern states in the USA and felt no racism – and I’m a black man. I did hear stories though…

However, I didnt have the good fortune of moving up the administrative structure as Dr. Peters has and without a doubt, the pressure piles on exponentially as a black man (foreign born no less) moves up the ladder leaving white counterparts behind.

So there very well may have been a valid racial element contributing to Dr. Peters’ woes.

In spite of all this, readers please note that his qualifications, expertise, skill and ability as an administrator was never called into question (at least not in these excerpts). Also, I may have overlooked them, but I saw no references to “red” or “labor party” or any other political rhetoric.

BOttomline is this, by all accounts the man is at least a “decent” administrator who pulls no punches and does what he think works and is right. So of course, he’ll seek to terminate the employment of those who are deadweight, or disagreeable, dissenters, etc. That doesn’t make him right or wrong, but there are always courses of action available for those who think they have been wronged.

Dr. Peters reminds me of the Oscar Wilde quote: ” Some people bring happiness wherever they go; others, whenever they go”.
Obviously, Dr. Peters belongs in the latter category.

Donald Peters, another one SINGING FOR HIS SUPPER. What or who is Peters trying to defend? Is Peters defending an illegal leader of Dominica? Is Peters defending CORRUPT practices? Is he condoning the stealing of people’s money from our Treasury to buy RUBBISH BINS at inflated prices just to make profits to fill the pockets of a few of his ilk? Is Peters supporting the defrauding of the Treasury of monies from that secret, controversial Trafalgar Land deal? Is Peters condoning the Fertilizer Bobol? Did Peters take time to find out about the Susan Olde matter and the whereabouts of the US$400,000.00 she donated to Dominica?

Does DEMOCRACY mean support for stealing, cheating, lying, quick enrichment by those in Public Office through dubious means? For Peters democracy means lying about dual citizenship to the Electoral Commission and Dominicans. Handing over National projects to hand picked friends without Open tendering is Democracy, Peters?

What do we expect Peters to say when the former President of DSC was forced out for an assignment overseas just for Peters to get the job as President of DSC. Peters don’t you have any SHAME? You should be the last person to talk of democracy.

Peters writes that Dominica needs its entire population to be educated in order to build our economies. The main question is what do people do with the higher education acquired. To FOOL people? To manipulate the poor? To use that education to act illegally? To use that education to slowly conduct elections that are NOT FREE and FAIR and to further do so by REFUSING to implement ELECTORAL Reform?

It is so called ‘Educated’ persons like Peters and his colleagues in ‘HIGH PLACES’ who have Dominica reeling in all sorts of economic morass, social and cultural degradation and political decadence. It is not the ordinary, marginalized persons, who did not attend high School, nuh, who are responsible for Dominica’s demise. Those persons, unfortunately are being BAMBOOZLED by the ‘EDUCATED’. FOOLED by the ‘EDUCATED’ BIG TIME. All they get are the CRUMBS, while people like Peters Well FIXING UP themselves.

CORRUPTION PLAGUES our country, but Peters has closed his eyes and ears to those everyday occurrences of CORRUPT activities. Peters now getting his FAT SALARY, so BAD GOVERNANCE is OK. Transparency and accountability should be erased from the English language for him. Dictatorial rule to him does not matter. He could always worm his way in that system working with his arrogant CORRUPT friends. Peters what or whom are you trying to DEFEND? Don’t you realize that you no longer have any CREDIBILITY? And it is you who is charged with seeing the next generation get educated? The next generation will be enslaved all over again doing the bidding of their Masters. Is so you want it? That is what suits you. Further entrenchment of Mental Slavery. The article is further proof of your thinking. Well, CRAPAUD SMOKE OUR PIPES.

I am quietly wondering if I am in the twilight zone, or a Hollywood Movie Production. Dr. Peters, this is the most misleading article that someone of your caliber could have written. If two business partners (Attorneys) are involved in a major court battle where one is alleging that some six million dollars was stolen, and the plaintiff’s home is suddenly fire-bombed, an investigation is warranted.

Although the current administration has made some strides, especially with the Roseau to Portsmouth Highway, they are not beyond reproach. As citizens of Dominica, we are entitled to voice our opinions. It was these same dis jockeys and wanna bees who informed us about the “Rubbish Bin Scandal.”

The present administration can nor will it own democracy, free speech and the right to disagree with policies we believe are not in the best interest of Dominica’s future. While you’re singing the praise of this administration, please enlighten us about the plan for youth development and crime reduction around the island. Thank you.

Dr. Peters call those who have raised questions about the quality of the leadership of Roosevelt Skerrit is providing this country wannabees. By his own words, Dr. Peters reveals that he is a wannabe. When Miss Charles was in the last years of her Prime Ministership, Donlad Peters visited Dominica and told the media that he is interested in succeeding her. When leaving Plattsburg under many clouds, he told a reporter ”I will go to another university or go home (to Dominica) and be a Prime Minister.” So, who is a wanna be ? Who has pipe dreams of being PM like Skerrit?

so doc why u think these ppl wants an investigation ….? is because….wit one man having so much power on the scale of dominican life….and money….and worshipers….our life have become unbalanced……so that is why our judgement is imparied…so we ask police men to protect alleged volehs…and ask prime minsters to investigate fire…..hhmmmppp hahahaha

  21. Bushmaninda
    January 4, 2011

This is intellectual dishonesty. No one really expect the PM to investigate a fire. What is called for and expected is that the PM use his influence (as the PM he does have influence) ensure that a suspicious fire of interest to many Dominicans is properly investigated. But of course, Mr. Peters you are aware of that; hence the dishonesty. How then can you expect to be credible .Doc this tact leads one to believe that you have an ax to grind or that, as some say, you are singing for your supper. The defense of the PM must be credible. You do harm to the battered PM by the dishonesty of your presentation.

Many who are pro Labour wonder why people are upset with the government to the point where they are venting their disgust in scathing attacks on the PM and other pro labour individuals.

It must be understood that it would never go down well with opposition supporters witnessing plane loads of people who are not eligible to vote landing in Dominica today, vote tomorrow and leave the next the day. That was not fair play in the last election and this is considered stealing an election.

How would one feel about the leader of the country governing by default after being in breach of the law as a dual citizen? The people who complain has every right to do so whether they are here, there or over there.

If something is wrong we must be man or woman enough to admit that it is wrong.

Did any of you even read the new year’s message? You really think that a man like Dr. Peters needs a “hand-out” from the government? Yes his first message should been addressed to us students but the man has a Democratic right to speak his opinions, a right all men have (regardless of class) in a Democracy such as ours so to say that he should be saying this is completely hypocritical as this right is more commonly used and abused by the opposition. It seems that the PM has a lot of “supper” that he is handing out and I hope for their sake the food is good considering the amount of grief they are getting. Will a day ever come when these two parties (and their die-hard supporters) realize the damage they are doing to the youth of this country? If the leaders of a country can’t get along at least on the professional level and the country is so politically divided to the point where we attack those who are not for us with hurtful insults, completely forgetting what they have done to develop the country (as imperfect as their efforts are) what does that say to us? The comments against this man’s character to me as a college student and a citizen is both sicking and heartbreaking.

No one asked you to agree but when you disagree with reasons and alternative thinking and solutions – the other side of the coin!

When one disagrees with a particular opinion, he/she does not hurl insults at the person or brand them to a color /party. They look at the various points made by the individual and pinpoints where they think the individual (erred in their opinion) and then shows or gives the alternative or suggestions.

My fellow Dominicans let me make it abundantly clear to everyone that Dominica is a democracy and will remain one. Let me remind everyone that there will be an election in three years. Is there corruption in government ? hell yes ! The questions is; are we going to accept it ? Remember PJ’s administration ? well, Mr Saverin was one of the architect for the change in government. In my opinion, the PM should have fired Saverin for calling for the boycut of a reputable business as retaliation for the business man’s letter this would have been democracy at it’s best. Donald should have written an unbias piece without attacking anyone and without disparaging anyone. Remember, we are all Dominicans and we should uplift each other irrespective of our educational background. Dominicans are very smart and we will make the right decision again in three years and this is the beauty of a democracy. Those of us living abroad have every right to make constructive criticism without any fear of returning home.

“Let me make it abundantly clear”, words of the late US President Richard Nixon, the Watergate crook. I did feel sorry for him though.
You sound like him. You must be residing in the US.
You are so wrong. Why should the PM call for the resignation of Savarin? He spoke as a citizen of Dominica, on behalf of Dominicans, who was upset about what Brisbane did. There is no one to call for Brisbane’s resignation since he is an employer, obviously working for himself.
Brisbane spoke against the PM and against Dominica. He has done much harm to the PM’s reputation and Dominica and its nationals. He is not to be exonerated for what he has done and also to the economy of Dominica.
Know this! Those of you who state that there is no democracy in Dominica, just think of what Brisbane did. Fortunate for him he is residing in a democratic country. Otherwise he would be tried for treason and executed.
Be fair and just. Many of you are not. You do not think, act and speak fairly.

Given a scenario When personal gain and ill-obtained wealth is used to inoculate the minds of a
people then inevitably, an oligarchy (a government in which a small group exercises control especially for corrupt and selfish purposes)is formed. Hence unethical and questionable use of public office is deemed as the norm, authoritarian use of national media houses and preferential treatment at the house of parliament is procured, the judiciary, religious and law enforcement system becomes maneuverable and accountability and transparency become obsolete. Further then wouldn’t one empirically conclude that democracy is threatened or has been depleted? The everyday people are so drunken by the wines of this regime that god and Christ is used synonymously with these figures especially PM Skerrit.

Moreover, the current government hierarchy was able to solicit for themselves an increase of 85% in salaries yet the civil servants can only be offered 3%. (Nurses, teachers, police officers, forest guards, are wailing for a better livelihood). one billion dollars indebtedness, gross unemployment, weaken or no off sure sector, a almost non existent agricultural sector, a ridiculous trade deficit and both foreign and local investment almost unachievable one has to be on another planet to concur with such ineptitude and incompetence.

My people, Roseau have been thrown to the back burner. Sports, infrastructural development, marketing and innovative development of this central point of national development has been totally dissipated.
The stadium should have been of a more strategic approach whereby, locals can obtain access to practice area for multiple sporting disciplines while housing these very same disciplines. The bridges, the financial center and Dominica Grammar school were good achievements. Also the Roseau to Portsmouth road project, the lifting of the user fees for the very young and the aged, and a few others otherwise, it has been little or no innovation, scope, vision, reactivity and strategic planning thus far.

They are in the worst mess imaginable..In your so called economic growth, have you seen it translate itself into employment for the youths of this country? YOU MUST STOP BEING A HYPOCRITE,WHEN YOU ARE REPRESENTING STUDENTS SIR! YOU MUST BE UPRIGHT SIR…i AM AFRAID YOU ARE TWISTING THE TRUTH,AND DECIEVING THE VERY STUDENTS WHO ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LEARNING FROM YOU!…IS THIS THE TRAJECTORY WE WANT FOR OUR COUNTRY?Are we not condemning our children to be liars, thieves, hypocrites and pretenders even before they are born? SO THAT’S WHY WE ARE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE IN THIS COUNTRY,BECAUSE OUR YOUTHS DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT ROLE MODELS..Your bias commentary is an affront to others who hold a similar title, and believe me your credibility is in tatters,( if at all you had any..) You were the same one who once said that only intelligent people should call the “talk shows’? I now understand why you do not call.. TRUST ME YOU ARE A SERVILE AND OBSEQUIOUS FLATTER OF YOUR GOD SKERRIT,and no Dominican should take you seriously!!

A Happy New Year to everyone!
Dr. Peters is correct. Excellent article; well stated. I cannot add too much more to this one.
The PM is not the one to investigate the cause of the fire. It is the obligation of the Police Investigative Services. This is done in every democratic country and Dominica is no exception.
If the Police Services refuse and fail to investigate it, then the PM will have to order them to do so.
It will be difficult for those who oppose to comprehend this. I have noted that there are some who do not appreciate educated statements and who do not place their thinking cap on.
It will be difficult for those who oppose to comprehend this. They project that they possess small, narrow and negative minds that really need to be educated. They do not appreciate what is good, what is stated and written. How many of them are genuinely assisting Dominica and its nationals as they talk and criticize? How many of them are doing good to make Dominica a better, safe and peaceful place to reside?
This should be their New Year resolution and also to be patient, positive and less critical of the PM of all. They have placed a great burden and stress on him which as I always state could be a cause to inhibit him from performing his elected duties appropriately. They must cease harassing him. They need a change of heart. God will be pleased with them and bless and grace them for at least making an effort, to love everyone with no exception and to make Dominica a better place to live.

I will wait and see if he will not turn against the PM too like Tom Fount eventually did. I wonder if he has been following the news or perhaps he has not been taught to make inferences. Perhaps he skipped those classes when he was at high school. You are excused Mr. Topcat. Those of us who know better can make inferences …link issues …read between the lines etc. These are basic language skills that must be mastered by any high school English-A student. Probably he was taught to be selective in when to use them.

I quite agree that it is not The PM”s job to investigate a fire..obviously not. But His silence is deafening.

    • The Concerned One

Then if thats the case he should comment on each and every crime in the state. There is a double murder surrounding the time and no one seems to care. Yes, I would agree that the alleged setting of fire to Gons residence should not be tolerated and condemned. However, this isn’t worst than the two young men who were murdered recently. When the PM speakes he must speak of crime in general and not jump when things happen to a set and stay mute when others are involved. Gon is only being talked about because we are politicizing a criminal issue.

Lets stay focus on what can we do to make DA a better place.

Ha! All I can say is time will tell. What was hidden from the wise and prudent will be revealed to the babes and sucklings no matter how many firewalls they put up.

How can an educated Dominican man tell me that there is so much development going on in Dominica when there is so little productivity. The school I come from tells me if you can’t produce you can’t develop. What we see as development in Dominica today is just a shell that is not sustainable. We will have a rude awakening when that shell cracks – it is just a matter of time unless we seriously look at sustainable development and begin producing to support our developmental needs.

So Bossman deal with your job and train our young people to be productive. When you start doing that then you can talk all you want.

Mr. Peters there are individuals who are going to agree with you and some who will not. I do have concern on how you portray or describe some of the people who without a doubt is bias when it comes to the PM. They have the right to say what they want. This is democracy. Having read your article some may say its bias because of the slant you took, while others may agree because of their polotical bias or their need to appreciate what we as the youth of this country needs at the moment among all these caos. Others may say why don’t you concentrate on running the college and have an article adressing the state of education in the country and a need for we as a people to be united in moving foward. An article with a less political conotation.

It is my opinion that you should have been more focused with a message for the college and students and education. Yes you did make mention of all three but the political slant affects it. I must however say that I agree with many of the things that you are saying. It is a shame that we shout loud when there is negative news about DA and say nothing when there is good. We sell the bad and hide the good. How can we now say that we love DA and is doing right by it? There is no love for country but ourselves.

If all of us would find something good to say about DA, then this would surely be better for us. This by no means take away our responsibility for talking about the ills in the country. Surely there must be alot good to say of DA.

i love your post. very balanced. if only everyone would take this route and be a less political, we might just move our beloved DA forward. Too much slandering is doing us no good.there is already a government in power, a government which although i didn’t help put in office, is in office. therefore, it would be in the best interest of all, to work together and help build i better nation. from sitting quietly and observing the PM, i have know he will give all a fair chance once it has to do with the development of the country.

So my fellow Dcans, i asked that we be less judgemental, that we support our government, that we discussed issues affecting our country and and provide innovative ways of moving Dominica to the next level.

Well said Mr President(DSC). I question the integrity and credibility of these so called patriotic D/cans. I ask myself about their contribution to the development of Dominica, since most of them have a failed record (here and overseas)

If they love DA sooooooo much why are the trying to stop development, just to destroy one young man in the person of PM Skerrit? But they have another thought coming.the masses love and appreciate the PM for his visionary leadership. So, members of CDD, EAT YOUR HEART OUT

Not only are you right on target…but none of those so call educated elite who seem to have all the answers, have ever contributed to Dominica’s Development. So many of these people still owe Dominica for their scholarship, they have yet to repay. All these Doctors and Engineers, haven’t volunteer one minute of their time, to aid the youth.

Here is a project for you all, Wash-Way have a program in Portsmouth, he needs tutors in; Math, Physic, Chemistry, etc…some of you “Educated Elite” can repay your student loans by volunteering one summer per year.

@ Treasury Department: Please delegate someone to investigate and post online all “Dead bit Dominican” who still owe and isn’t trying to pay back their student loans. Also, all those island scholar who have yet to fulfill their commitment to our nation…SHAME on you all!

I am so “F” fed-up with those “Educated Elite” who just keeps on braying and not providing any feasible solutions to Dominica’s problems. A whole bunch of “Reactionary” …. whatever Skerrit do, even his positive and progressive moves, they react negatively too. That’s why the public don’t listen anymore.

Life have to be Balance…fair is fair!!!

PS: But please tell PM Skerrit to give Chavez some room, I don’t like him in Chavez’s back pocket…he is too cool a PM to smell like shit.

It is people like you who destroy nations to build up personality cults.
You put personalities before institutions meant to serve the people
Your kind are selfish and myopic

It is people like you who make us a second rate democracy (if at all we are a democracy)
You act like Roosevelt Skerrit is the Lord of all things seen and unseen; like he is the only person capable of the affairs of state in this country, like it is only him who has spoken and who will ever speak to foriegn leaders, like there has never been other leaders before him and none after him.
You remind me of those Jim Jones’ers down in Guyana who surrendered their very consciences and faculties of reason the influence of one man (who by the way could do no wrong).

Most of what this government is doing are mimics of the UWP projects and plans that they never got to finnish because the people misunderstood them at that time.

The people have been trying to overturn that mistake ever since, But alas, their efforts have been repeated thwarted by a curropt government machinery whose moral compass and civility is directed by only one thing – staying in power and protecting the biggest criminal this country has ever seen. But the conscience of the people is slowly being reborn into the virtues we once had as a Christian people, because they are now seeing the consequence of following the path of evil for the sake of material gain. So with the efforts of the rightious, the platform of the beast will quickly crumble under its own weight because that evil platform upon which it find support is being dissolved by the heavenly virtue of the God who loves His people and who will not see them delivered unto evil.

      Amen

Did everyone of you read the comments above without putting a political hat on top of your head. Read again and again. It would seem that once the person or individual comments positively about the PM, then I guess he is in your words “singing for his supper”. After Merrick’s message to Labourites and UWPites ( I am sure most of you did not read indepth). You all are still obsessed with only hearing negatives about PM.

This is 2011 and stop for Our Father in Heaven’s sake… Is this what we want to teach our young person – to be negative? I will probably have a column one of these days. Still being disrespectful .. to tell the man go and do his job. So those who are castigating and maligning including some of the commentors on DNO… Is this your job to malign and insult and all the negatives comments? You support talk about democracy which we do have because if we did not have democracy… persons like some of you would not have been able to say some of the things you are saying. Yet Mr Peters because he is President of the DSC, should only concern himself with things dealing with the DSC (one of you hinted that he should go do his work and one – that he should have wished the Students – A happy New year). To have a prospersous and all the godies in the land – first we need a relationship with the Father and also we need to address the negativity in the land because if not attacked , we shall not have peace in the land to enjoy all the goodies. You need to talk but he should not talk but looking on the broader spectrum.. He has to talk because in truth and in fact we are confusing the young minds and some are at the State College. Mr. Peters is well within his right to address what is happening in our country as all those negatives will definitely impact on the youths of today – some are under his stewardship at the DSC.

2011 let us get away from that mepuis and mudslinging attitude of 2010 and before.. Let us make objective comments without insulting anyone and also let us leave out political colours out of every thing this year. let us make an effort. Let us pray for our country but before we pray let us get closer to our Father , repent of the wrong we have done in the past (truly repent not in words but by our actions after we have repented and read his words and do our best to walk in obedience with him in following his commandments. He has asked us to be each others keeper and to pray for all yes all our leaders. Only then can we pray and our prayers will be heard and he will send a blessing over our land.

In 2011, we need nothing else but that blessing which our Father has promised us which will filter to each and everyone in our own homes and families once we do his will and this does not include what is presently happenning in our country. Forward we move as one people, one nation, in one accord, in unison under the umbrella of the Great king – the Great I am.

Peace and Love to one and all in the Commonwealth of Dominica.

I agree 100% with everything Doctor Donald C Peters PhD mentioned in this article. The opposition is always negative, all they do is spend time bashing the Prime Minister and can’t seem to prove anything. A handful of negative people with loud mouths trying to sway a whole nation into believing those terrible propagandas. To me its an all out psychological war against the PM and his government, constant attacks on the PM through the media, protests etc. The opposition party is indirectly waging war, a losing battle on their end. The DLP won election at such a great margin, therefor it doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to realize that way more than half of the country supports the government. The opposition is still failing to realize that trying to topple the government is way out of their capabilities. Next election, the United Workers Party will lose again, they will continue losing simply because Dominicans are not shallow minded, we are smart people who knows what’s best for us. Dirty politics is UWP’s best offense, but sadly, they don’t realize that this is played out, they’re so focused on being negative, its beginning to show on their faces “literally”. UWP, stop being mad at the world, if you knew better, you would be governing Dominica right now. The people doesn’t want or need you as their leader for obvious reasons so please respect that.

Be careful what nest of ants you stir.

You are just crying for your supper and do not know where to begin. Why is it wrong to call on the Prime Minister (we) elected to investigate a fire? Since when it got wrong? When Mr. Isidore was brought to court by his former business partner, Dominicans did not call on the PM to give police security to Mr Isidore since mr Isidore is a private citizen like all of us. Yet, the PM gave high police security to him as if it was Obama coming to town. We all know what turn this thing took and two weeks later the same man’s house nn fire. Can we trust that same police force that provided political security to Mr Isidore, with a fair investigation? To get a fair investigation that will satisfy all Dominicans, Blue, Red, and Green, we need the PM to seek help from an independent firm such as FBI and deal with this matter once and for all. Stop singing for your supper! Bye the way, are you related to the newly appointed Attorney General? Just curious.

u have belittled the unemployed populace,,,so mr peters u r saying that people chose to be unemployed,,,well there are some lazy bastards but i’d not agree with such n i don’t think u’d also,,,but it shows that such people like u have forgotten the struggle that ordinary citizens face and have to live with day in and day out,,,lots of the college students especially for some young women have to do major sacrifice to go college,,,even if it means being good to some loan officers,,,that is the sad reality that we face but people like u would not bring down the tuitution fee,,,a college graduate in every home by 2015 would be good but let’s be real,,,thats not realistic,,,ur start from the bottom,,,and that means reinstating the free text books initiative that the u.w.p had for all primary and secondary students,,,and go further by ensuring all schools are equipped with computer labs,,,and information technology is taught or available to all students in secondary schools not just those who do good in maths etc or are hand picked by teachers,,,,i could say more but i feel i have written quite alot so i’ll save for someone else

Dr Peters…I could not have said it any better…you are right on point…Yes, I do believe in an opposition, it helps to keep the government in check and democracy alive…However,we have to draw the line somewhere. When I listen to the so called oppositon “pundits”, I for one, detect a certain “venom” or “hate” in their underlying tones for a young intelligent gentleman, who is sacrificing his own personal life to lead this country. He is respected in international circles for the a\way he is handling and directing the economy of Dominica…Jeeeeez…give Jack his Jacket nuh???
I guess a prophet is never recognised in his own country!!!!
More power to you Dr Peters…. keep on trucking…!!!!

I have predicted that Skerrit will take down a lot of once respoected Dominicans with him. Dr. Peters, we know that Skerrit is running out of propagandists now since the ones that were out lost all credibility, so he is sending out a new group of propagandist.. Dr. Peters, at one time I respected you, but since you bgan yolking with this pirates of the Cariibean I began questioning whether I should continue to respect you. Now you have made it clear to me that you no longer deserve my respect. Sir you are supposed to be an educator, from my vantage point I see YOU Dr. Peters as one of those who are miseducating our youth, one of the basic things that youth need to be taught is the diiference between right and wrong, they are supposed to be taught ETHICS what is your role in teaching vlaues and ethics to the Dominican youth Dr. Peters? This article makes it clear to all of us Sir. This is disgraceful and sad. Do yourself a favor and stay away from the propaganda operation, you are letting us down.. Stop supporting what you should know is wrong.. This little job is not worth your integrity Sir, you have been to much bigger places than that! SHAME ON YOUR DR> Peters, I am sure you know better, which tells me that you are being intellectually DISHONEST!!! Is this all we got in Dominica.. Poor the next generation.

For Some reason you guys think whenever you speak everyone must just return to the rock of which they crawled from. Mr. Peters with due respect while i believe it is the role of the fire dept to make such an investigation you make it to obvious that your aim is to depend skerrit. You have no morals or values because your track record from the various colleges that you were part of speaks for itself.

Man you need to know your place and just shut the hell up

What the joke for me this morning therer. You are not even taking the time to wish your students a happy new year but you want to come on DNO delivering your politically motivated message well i see right through that!!!!

      January 3, 2011

This is exactly what happened at last general elections when the credible Frank Baron weighed in on the corruption and villas debate but againt the PM’s corner. Do you all remember the heavy weights of “upstanding”, “reputable” Dominicans that were traipsed out to give statement, all carrying brief for the PM?

Well boy Donald you really scraping the bottom these days. The things a man must do to ensure steady income, I guess.
