Despite troubles PM generates excitement

The PM addressing the nation on Independence morning

When Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit appeared at the Windsor Park Stadium on the morning of November 3, Independence Day, he was greeted with thunderous applause.

So great was the enthusiasm that rippled through the crowd one commentator concluded, “This man is as popular as ever.”

Dressed in a dark blue suit with a madras bow tie, the Prime Minister appeared confident.

But while he addressed the nation on Dominica making strides, the issues that haunt him and his administration never seem far away.

The most pressing at this time is the just completed dual citizenship case which has the potential to re-arrange the political landscape and the future of politics in Dominica.

Defeated by Skerrit in Vielle Case and Education Minister Petter Saint Jean in La Plaine the United Worker’s Party’s Maynard Joseph (Vielle Case) and Ron Green (La Plaine) set in motion a series of events that have captivated political watchers, commentators and ordinary citizens at home and abroad.

Using a little known clause in the Constitution that bars dual citizens from non Commonwealth countries from running for or holding political office in Dominica, the UWP went to court alleging that both the Skerrit and Saint Jean were French citizens at the time of the last general election in 2009.

The court case itself brought to the fore many juicy facts, previously unknown to many Dominicans, including the fact that Green himself was a US citizen for 15 years while holding political office and UWP President Edison James infamously admitting, “I knew he (Green) was a US citizen but I always considered him a Dominican.”

While the public eagerly awaits the judge’s the decision on this matter Skerrit has not curled up in a fur ball to await his fate. On many occasions he has come out swinging and his ‘win, lose or draw’ comment has drawn the ire of his critics.

But for anyone who thinks that the judge’s decision is going to put an end to this matter should think again because Senior Counsel Tony Astaphan has hinted that the matter is “far from over” and it could well end up in the court of appeal. How long this might take is beyond anyone’s knowledge at this point.

Meanwhile other issues keep surfacing and resurfacing and rumors continue to swirl unabated. Detractors continue to complain that Skerrit has accumulated suspiciously significant personal assets in his short time in office. Other rumors circulate that Skerrit receives money from Venezuela and China, and that he may be personally involved in the sale of Dominican diplomatic and tourist passports.

And then there is the so-called fertilizer and garbage bin ‘bobol’ where it is alleged that the government purchased garbage bins and fertilizer at highly inflated rates from a US resident brother of a senior government minister. There is the villas issue and the alleged fire-bombing of a well-known former magistrate. To make matters worst, confidential cables from the US embassy in Barbados leaked by whistle blower site Wikileaks have painted a not so flattering ‘profile’ of the Prime Minister.

But all these seemed far away from the minds of those who screamed and shouted and danced enthusiastically to greet the Prime Minister on Independence morning. When one person in the crowd was asked about the Prime Minister’s troubles, he simply said, “It’s all politics man. We the people run things.”

I visited Dominica recently and I had to ask, how are you people surviving. yes there are little development here and there but lord the people are suffering. As far as I see the only people prospering are the drug dealer, no lie. they can build mansions but the poor people are struggling, food are so expensive yet no or very little income, gone are the days of large banana and coconut plantations, farmers who once use to florish are no longer. I had to ask what is our main source of income? we have fertile soil yet we import food that is so expensive, poor people cannot aford. young people leave school and there are no jobs. No wonder so many are turning to drugs or are forced to migrate. Something must be done, yes we can and should do better. Help the farmers, produce more, export more. We are blessed with natural resources use it to help eleviate poverty in our country and enough of the politics.

DNO have you recruited a writer from Skerrit’s secret police or his campaign? It sure sounds that way from the article. I suppose you will call that balance journalism. If you are not a part of the solution you are part of the problem.

ADMIN: If you don’t want to read, there is a word in English call “ignore.” USE IT.

I don’t think Dominican’s hate Skeritt. I for sure don’t hate him. I hate most of the things his name is involved in because I know one day he will be out of power and somebody else will have to replace him. To me, I have a problem with some of the people he associates with and the way in which he has curruptly abused the office of the PM for personal gain. That to me is a serios problem because if it is ok for him then when he is gone his successor will feel they could do the same thing and get away and that is a bad example for the country. However, there is nothing bad about the man Skeritt and he is very likable. I guess he knows that and can risk doing evil knowing that he is popular and loved.

But I don’t understand why DNO put this one out anyway. To me that’s not news worthy especially at a time when his fate in in the hand of the court.

I find DNO is too political and always looks for ways to protect and promote Mr. Skeritt.
If there is something that is going to affect Skerrit, DNO will not put it out. When they put out an item where Skeritt is being criticized, they will accept comments that will do very little damage to Skeritt but those that would really send the message home, they are very quick to ignore and will tell you that it’s because they want to protect themselves from law suit. However, when it is time for people to hit on beth or individuals like pastor BJ or Lenox Linton, they allow you to say what you want and on them even nasty things on BJ’s wife, and they will put it out. Lawsuit is not a problem but it is a problem when we say things about a PM we elected and pay.

Facts are Dominicans dont paid attention or discuss issues at and lenghty levels

its all about the bling in Dominica its sad but thats the truth, country could be sold in a few months who cares, the citizens are timid to take actions so thats leaves the island to be doomed..

a few try but sadly they cant create or make a dent to crack open the society to discuss issues..dominicans see and love what shins but isnt real, bears no fruit at all.but they embrace the fact thats it maybe shining how can you ever think of convincing a society with that level of thinking, it may take 42 years as the libyans did but dont see any changes around the corner.

once he can paid off the churches and a few so call high profile folks they will continue to keep the lid on dominicans, thats the truth, once the unions are dormant as they are nothing will bring a uprising..dominicans are quite contended with Skerrit if they werent you would see some form of action to make a hault..

its just talk and more talk in dominica, jokes, folks drink their $2.00 rum and pretty much say so thats how it goes and thats it…..dominica is a classical case of where the citizens just dont get it period sad but thats the truth nothing bothers them at any level, thats why i see this regime stil able to sneak out of the back door and stil govern through their spin doctors and the churches upholding their evil deeds..

According to the holy gospel, Jesus rode on a donkey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday and the celebrating throng was huge. The people shouted hosanna and waved branches of the palm tree – a sure sign of victory. They were so excited that they removed their coats lay them down in front of Jesus. Alas! a few days later those same people crucified Jesus.

Say what you will, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has done an excellent job of leading Dominica during a time of extreme financial difficulty. The global financial crisis has shaken the region and the world. Yet in Dominica, under the leadership of our remarkable PM, we have not only survived… we have thrived! Dominica is developing faster than ever before, better roads, better housing, our new State House complex, improvements in Education, and so much more.

That is what was reflected in the enthusiasm displayed when the PM addressed the nation. Skerrit truly is a man of the people and the people love him. Divisive politics will never change that regardless what the few vocal critics on Q95 and in the UWP say the fact remains PATRIOTIC DOMINICANS LOVE OUR PRIME MINISTER!

What all you trying now – to create infighting now? Well well haterz behaving with the subtle enemy all you not easy now. Now you want to make it look like party supporters fighting against each other. All you not easy.

Father God guide and protect us in this time when man aided and abbetted by the “Evil One” will stoop so slow to gain power. Father this land is yours. You have blesed us this far with so many good things – water, food, and so many other things that we are blessed with . The space here is not enough to mention.

The question has to be asked. Given all that has been said or alleged about the Prime Minister, why is it that he still commands such great and enthusiastic support wherever he goes in Dominica? Doesn’t that say much about the calbre of the person?. Should that support be interpreted to mean that Dominicans support corruption or imorality? Far from that though. I belive the PM is popular because his detractors have failed to make any headway because they do not have any evidence to propve their allegations. They bring suspicion to every action of the government and the PM in particular. Every action, every word of the PM is rebuff by the oppposition as anti-development, corrupt and immoral. They do not give him any credence for anything good. As far as they are concerned he can do nothing good. That is the biggest problem of the opposition. So when Mr. James says that he ALWAYS knew Ron Green to be a US citizen, but ALWAYS considered him Dominican, but by inference, Skerrit as a French citizen is not and was not a Dominican, the Dominican people see through these double standards and do judge THE OPPOSITION. It cannotbe that two individuals, by virtue of your own standards are infringing the laws of the country, but you choose to challenge one without even acknowledging that the other was or is equally guilty of the crime you have so clearly identified.

Skerrit is no perfect being but the non-ending, 24 seven opposition (mostly media based)to every and anything he does has not and will not deliver government to the oppostion. Unfortunately, the opposition has not learned from the outcome of the last general elections. In fact they have in soem ways turned thier ire against the Dominican people and referring tot eh Dominican populace as supporters of corruption and immorality.

“Win, lose or draw”. The PEOPLE of Dominica, not ‘people’s parliament” will be the final court of arbitration in this matter when the time comes – by-election or general election. No amount of name calling or villification of the masses of Dominicans will work. Common sense and an understanding of who is working for the development of Dominica and who has been able to achieve so much in so short space of time is all that matters. The opposition better learn a thing or two from Skerrit.

By the way, if I had a choice between Roosevelt Skerrit and Hector John for Prime Minister, the choice is clear. Hector John does not have the charisma, appeal (not physical) that Skerrit has. It is a chalk and cheese matter.

Leave the PM alone! stop Hating! Look objectively at what is happening in Dominica and even if you do not want to love him. Give Jack his Jacket and Lizzie her lipstick! The commenter says that in your “eyeses” (my spelling and emphasis) person like your self and the others want to make the PM as though nothing he does is right. ???????????Would you like to be treated in that manner when you become PM or Minister or whatever. You and any of the others can become PM or a leader as well. Stop and answer my query- Would you like to be treated in tht manner? Do unto others as you would like them treat you, your family and loved ones.

While Mr. Skerrit my have made some errors like every other human would, never have we seen so much development in the country. For those who did not hear it, Mr. James one said that the West Coast road was not a priority… is this the kind of people we would want to represent us?

God bless Mr. Skerrit! Rather than constantly criticizing him, why don’t we lend a hand in helping to move our country forward?

What? You were obviously not in the Park! Their was a very large crowd and almost all were cheering wildly for the Prime Minister. There were of course a few who came to chant down the government and be negative but for every 3 of those there were at least 18 positive-minded patriots.

Stop hating! Hating will only destroy you the hates not the one who is hated. As for me I don’t care who hates me as long as God loves which I know he does. I want to do his will for my life.

Haterz be aware that the person you hate is not even aware of your hatred and that hatred ‘ will quaver your l’estomache’ and it only your heart that will be hurting whether it is the PM or any other person you hate. So let go that hatred and be at peace with all mankind.

The opposition has not let off and they have no plans to let off on their 24-7 “everything bad in Dominica” opposition to Skerrit. Why should Skerrit supporters let off now. Now is the time to redouble our efforts to let the world know that what they hear on Q95 does not represent the views of the vast majority of the Dominican people.

So if people hardly take note of Spagss and his puppet response to the owner of the UWP is no fault of Skerrit. Take that

      • Aye Dominique
        November 7, 2011

When you support you need to have a clear idea as to what you’re supporting. I am no UWP, but I stand for integrity in public office, what do you support?

You’re talking about let off, you all will let off, trust me you all will. It took Libya how long again?

Blood shed cyan stop in Libya as we speak, if this is how you all want it then, no need to fight over anything, you all got it, just continue on your ignorant path.
