DLP Soufriere candidate lays out priorities for constituency

Charles gave her first major speech on Saturday evening

New candidate for the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) in the upcoming by-election to be held in the Soufriere constituency on June 7, Denise Charles, has told constituents that her main focus will be on sports development, small business development, women entrepreneurship and pushing forward the vision of transforming that constituency through tourism and agriculture.

She made that remark at her official launching ceremony at Pointe Michel on Saturday evening.

A by-election in that constituency became necessary following the resignation on Tuesday, 26th April, 2016, of Ian Pinard as the Parliamentary Representative, who vacated his seat because of what he said were allegations made against him.

“Once we stand united, greater things are yet to come,” Charles said. “I can say to my constituents that I am going to be focused on sports development, small business development, women entrepreneurship, and pushing forward the vision of transforming our constituency through tourism and agriculture. We are richly blessed in this constituency with amazing talent and opportunities to achieve the greatest things. We have to work together.”

The 36-year-old said although the party is pleased with the way things are going in this new tenure, “but of course we will never be fully satisfied.”

“We will never be satisfied until everyone who seeks productive work, can gain employment and secure a sustainable livelihood for themselves and their families,” Charles noted. “We will never be satisfied until we have built back a better infrastructure in the face of the devastation to some communities brought on by the storm last August.”

She stated further that the challenges are great, and still there is a lot of hard work ahead, “but we can do it, together.”

“So we have a choice: we can sit and complain; pretend to not see the achievements that have been made; or we can stand firm and focused on the greater things we want to achieve for ourselves and our children,” she said.

She warned constituents to not get sidetracked or caught up in rumours, mud-slinging, false perceptions and bitterness.

“Instead, let us remain steadfast in our mission to improve our constituency, to improve our Nation,” she said.

Charles told constituents that under the DLP administration, there has been significant development in every major sector and according to her, the party will continue its efforts in building a stronger nation.

“What I am saying to you is that this government has placed Dominica on a secure platform for growth. It has worked toward improving our health system, education system, road system and investment programmes to create jobs,” Charles stated.

To her critics she remarked, “With the Lord on my side, whom shall I fear?”

She also pointed out that the Soufriere constituency will not be divided by colour, but united in the common focus of achieving the greatest things for Dominica.

“Make no mistake, sisters and brothers, this election is an important one. There are many who are saying that Labour is already in government with a majority, so there is no need to go out and vote. But I say to you today, as many who are saying that, there are others on the Opposition side that will go out and vote for their candidate so that Labour will be one seat down. Do not be deceived or misinformed, and do not miscalculate, my fellow Labourites. You need to turn out in even greater numbers than you did in 2015 when you gave Labour a resounding mandate to continue to take Dominica forward,” she indicated.

Charles added, “Constituents don’t focus on the distractors who are bent on planting seeds of hatred to keep us divided, yet want to portray themselves as the next best thing. Focus your future and the future of your children and I know that you’ll agree with me that this Government is the best option for such a time like this, in our beautiful Nature Isle. So come out on election day and put your X next to the shoe.”

Higgs Adams who contested that seat during the 2014 general election, will be the Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) candidate for the upcoming by-election.

The party’s leader, Lennox Linton said the UWP is ready to contest the by-election.

Love! it is not the way you all abuse it and if you have a soul you must vote miss Denise. Your friend is your friend don’t matter what. We are the same below but we all different on top. As a team we support each other in good times and bad times. Your anger is the way you all treated Joshua Francis and seeing his opposite right before your eyes. You all are paying the prize for crucifying an innocent member of your team. As for children they were not dropped they were born. Blackberry you cannot afford they have one, they don’t travel by public transport but cannot afford a car, always out late at nights ,you cannot control that how do you expect a stranger to do it for. Good luck in your new post miss Denise. If anyone refuse to vote for you it means they don’t like themselves.

A win by Higgs will give the people hope. it will send a clear message to the DLP that Soufriere people my beautiful people are not hopeless. They are not gaulible!. Their intelligence have been insulted enough, with roads, house money rum. Yet we have nothing. It breaks my heart when I get back home. It is bakes and rum shop . Sad that this young lady seems new to the game and is already letting us know that we must be ‘thankful’ for not having the dirt road that we had when she was a child. Since she is the holder of several degrees which means that she has traveled out of this country, we are sure she knows what development looks like. Ms Charles, does Pointe Michel and Dominica by extension look developed to you? Do you honestly think that the DLP has done all that it could have to develop this country over the past 15 years? You have eyes and a conscience.

You’re willing to sell your soul to the devil for a seat? Really? The innocence of our children and their suffering now rest squarely on your shoulders. You make me sick to my stomach. To listen to this garbage of a speech while ignorning the 800 pound gorilla in the room is simply sad. Parents need to start taking matters into their own hands. It’s high time. So what’s your policy for the Soufriere constituency? You missed a golden opportunity over the weekend of making a public declaration about your ‘POLICY’ and ‘AIMS’ for the Soufriere constituency. What we are seeking from you or from anyone put forward to represent this constituency is “IDEAS IN ACTION” and for not achieving the desired end you’re truly a waste of space.

This represents the most utter and absolute disrespect of the people of Soufriere in particular, and the people of Dominica in general. The decision to have Ian on the stage with you is an absolute slap in the face of every decent and respectable woman: women who have fought so much and so hard for equality, recognition, respect and equality.

I simply cannot believe you could so blatantly betray the cause of every woman’s plight around the world.

It is one thing to disguise the charge as inappropriate behavior but internationally we all know it as as child molestation. As a female, Denise should disassociate herself with such a man. Until then, Denise your words are meaningless and you are just another self serving SKerrit puppet. What is wrong with you people, take a stance for once. It is OK to represent your people, that is always a good thing but you should have told your master that you want to stay away from Ian Pinard, at least people would respect you a little bit more. But because Ian allegedly played the fool, and was arrested and charged for a very SERIOUS CRIME, all of a sudden this woman trying to present herself as a new comer into the mess of the DLP, and wants to present priorities? Why not point to what Ian started and vow to continue them? Is it because he and the DLP have done nothing? She reminds me of my Paix Bouche Parlrep, who was there with the former lazy, peepeep, father in law like Parlrep, who did nothing in 20 years but when Skerrit had enough of him, he dumped him and replaced him with Roselyn, who still cannot get a thing done. IS IT IAN PINARD IN THE BACKGROUND? It is indeed shameful for Dominica, that we have abandoned our children to the extent that many are left at the mercy of vultures…Nowhere in what I read, has the lady condemned CHILD MOLESTERS,and those who VICIOUSLY VIOLATE young children..Lady this is why we are having this nby-election.by-election.Dominpica has retrogressed under Skerrit as PM..He is a square peg in round hole..No proper hospital,no proper airport, agri ulture dead, tourism comatosed, manufacturing buried, all institutions dismantled, unemployment is at an unprecedented high rate,BEGGING has increased,CORRUPTION has increased, CRIME has increased, more criminals have our passports,no tendering for bridge construction, etc….From 2000 to 2016, under DLP,Dominica has become a failed state…You need to be REJECTED, Lock Stock and Barrel by the voters…You are now part of the worst regime in the Commonwealth..SHAME ON YOU LADY!!!

won’t bet on that Constituency based on the fact, many are below the poverty line and unable to think critically of the wider view!

so base on the current situation and trend in a island where the majority are weak i see the labour party unleashes it’s bag of goods, which the feeble citizens there will gasp for!.

it’s a extremely difficult task for UWP to gain that seat.wish they could, but one has to face the facts on the ground…

It’s a cultural weakness across most of the length and breath of Dominica, if they had that gusty will power, the island won’t not sink that low period!!

It is sad. When did our people become so gullible to a few handouts and unable to think critically for themselves. How can it be the correct and honourable thing to resign but campaign so openly. He and the candidate need to be sent a strong message. Dominicans used to be the most resilent and vocal people. People of soufriere constituency, stand up and vote this people out. Do it for ur children.

i think you’re completely WRONG…where and when were dcans resilient no way….when it come to vocal, they chat allot of crap..

if there were resilient there would be many success stories and a thriving environment..dcans are known to settle for crumbs at all levels…
