His Excellency Deng Boqing, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Commonwealth of Dominica, bid farewell to the island he has called home for almost four years in a reception at the State House on Wednesday evening.

During a brief discourse with those in attendance, the Ambassador, who makes his way now to Nigeria, said: “On the eve of my departure, my steps seem to become more and more reluctant. Dominica, the isle of nature, is the place where my good memories reside.”

He spoke of the bilateral milestones achieved during his tenure. “I have been privileged and proud to witness a steady progress of China-Dominica bilateral relations. High-level political contacts have kept channels for dialogues wide open, nurturing our mutual trust, and in turn nourishing our relations.”

He assured that China has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Government of Dominica in developing its national economy, even in a time of the unprecedented global financial crisis.

Prime Minster Roosevelt Skerrit, during a ‘pat-on-the-back’ speech, commended the work of the departing ambassador.

The PM lauded his ability to amplify the vigor of his predecessor and secure the trust and confidence of the people of Dominica.

“Diplomacy is entrenched in mutual trust and friendship… China kept all promises to Dominica,” Skerrit said. “You served China but worked for Dominica… Dominica is a great friend of China… I feel a deep sense of regret that you’re leaving.”

Meanwhile, Ambassador Boqing cited two of his biggest achievements for the people of Dominica during the past four years. These include the ongoing rehabilitation project of the west coast road that commenced in February 2010 and the Windsor Park Sports Stadium.

He considers these as notable milestones in “China-Dominica economic cooperation”.

“Thanks to our two peoples’ concern and curiosity about each other, our cooperation and communication has been dynamic and diverse, covering the fields of agriculture, health care, education and culture,” he said.

In the past few years, over 130 Dominican professionals went to China for seminars, and 90 full university scholarships were granted to outstanding Dominican students.

Ambassador Boqing expressed gratitude to His Excellency President Liverpool and Mrs. Liverpool, Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, other cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, government officials, leaders of all political parties, Dominica Police Forces, SSU in particular, and the friends of diplomatic corps, for their strong support to his work during his tenure as Ambassador.”

“May our two countries enjoy everlasting friendship and even closer mutual-beneficial cooperation,” he concluded.
