Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has said that Dominican courts are free and independent and urges anyone whose rights have been infringed to seek redress there.
Skerrit made that comment at the 10th inauguration ceremony of the Roseau City Council at the Arawak House of Culture last night.
“Any citizen can go to the court and put forward a case against anybody who has infringed or trampled on his fundamental rights and the courts in Dominica are totally independent of the executive, the courts perform their functions and these are the things that we have to stand for as Dominicans,” he said.
“We must never give people the impression that the courts are not independent and they are not acting out of their own independence cause this thing is alive and well in Dominica. Where the courts decide on the merits of a case and determine what it has to do next,” he stated.
He added, “Even the prime minister who was brought to court through a petition. Lets go to the court; if you have additional evidence to prove your case then take it to the court, let the court decide and move the process forward. We cannot try to go around the system and try to achieve an end besides going through the legal process …”
The prime minister is convinced that Dominica enjoys the most freedoms in the western hemisphere.
“I am not aware of any country in the western hemisphere that is more free than Dominica, that people can go on a radio program and say what they want about anybody in this country with impunity. That people can demonstrate without seeking the proper permission to demonstrate and nobody gets arrested. Not even in America you can do that, you will get arrested if you go in Washington DC without having the permission to demonstrate,” he said.
“People are free to congregate and to gather and to associate in Dominica. There’s freedom of religion as a matter of fact over the last eleven years we’ve seen more churches coming up in Dominica because people are free to worship in Dominica,” he further stated.
