The calls coming out of Sunday’s convention of the opposition United Workers Party are familiar ones: the need for electoral reform, voter ID cards, as well as a signal that the party could challenge through an appeal, the January 10 court decision that ruled that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and his Education Minister Peter St Jean were legally elected in the December 18 2009 general election.
UWP President Edison James, the man likely to once again step forward as party leader, told delegates that Dominica’s democracy would disappear if the government does not make funds available to the electoral commission to put in place voter ID cards for general elections.
And expressing disappointment with the recent court ruling on the dual citizenship matter, James reiterated calls for financial support from UWP-ites and others to help the party appeal the decision.
The UWP’s parliamentary leader, Hector John who represents the Salisbury constituency, repeated the call for electoral reform when he addressed the party’s La Plaine convention. He said the opposition party welcomes infrastructural development, in acknowledgement of ongoing road and other state projects. However, he emphasized that such projects should be of the highest quality, and provide employment for locals.
John also focused briefly on crime, telling delegates that the UWP had written to the government calling for a symposium on crime and violence but had to date received no response. The UWP parliamentary leader also urged the Dominican public to call for what is right: “Do not be silent,” he advised.
The convention was also hearing from party leader Ron Green, who was making what was expected to be his last speech in that capacity.
Green confirmed ahead of the convention, that he would be stepping down as party leader.

I think we need national id cards instead especially now as everyone needs an id to sign at the Registry. A lot of elderly people have no id and that can be used as their id when they need one.

Hector John is right as the Government to fix his Constituency and if was the Hon PM I will gladly ask the Treasury to redirect he (Hector John’s) monthly check to fix up his constituency after all he is not attending parliament and after 2 years of getting free money he can give up that salary as he is not working for it and the last time I checked he is not eligible for pension at his age.
