Speaker of the House, Alix Boyd-Knights, has withdrawn her nomination for the presidency of Dominica because of fear for the safety of her family, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced.
The prime minister confirmed on state-owned DBS Radio on Wednesday morning that the nomination was withdrawn after Boyd-Knights insisted that she wanted to step down and decline.
“She has written to me on the matter citing a number of reasons,” Skerrit said. “On of which being her concern for the safety of her family because of the inflammatory statements and comments that have been made by elements within the opposition party here in Dominica.”
Despite this, the prime minister said the government believes Boyd-Knights was the ideal candidate to be Dominica’s head of state.
“We still hold that madam speaker was an ideal candidate, that she has the necessary qualifications to be president and I dare say more qualified than many in this country to be president of Dominica.”
He stated that Boyd-Knights had championed the rights of women for decades, has recognized the importance of advancing women academically and professionally and is a ‘bold articulator of issues.’
He pointed out that the speaker is well recognized regionally and internationally but despite this he stated, “I cannot force the presidency on anybody.”
“It is a matter of the person having to accept,” the prime minister stated. “She accepted initially and listening to the very inflammatory comments that have been made and out of concern for the safety of her children in particular, she has indicated her decision to decline the nomination of the government.”
More than anything else i am of the view that it is THE POWER IN THE PEOPLE that has brought about this turn of events. The very MANY decenting voices on the DNO poll is a clear indication that this nomination was against the wishes of the people inclusive of members of the DLP who had the country’s best interest at heart.

As I listen, there is constant mention of the outstanding, and not so outstanding qualifications of various individuals who are vying for positions of public service in the Isle of Beauty. It occurs to me as I hope it does to the general populace, that the over emphasis on academic achievements at the neglect of those service qualities that really matter, [such as Honesty, Integrity, Family cohesiveness, Servant attitude, Work-ethic, and Humility, and self Control, Contentment, [NOt greedy for money]is the step in the wrong direction that Dominica has taken, and the nation is already being confronted with the results of that decision. As important as they are, academic achievements pale in comparison to the servant spirit that must be the outstanding trait in the character of every would-be successful public servant. I am shocked and disappointed in the attitude of those critics who do not appreciate an educated and experienced candidate as you. It is because some of them do not think beyond and cannot see beyond.

I suspect the real reason she declined the nomination is that the PM, realizing the widespread objection to her nomination including from Labourites, wanted to withdraw the nomination but faced uneasiness of telling Alix Boyd Knight that he wishes to withdraw. So, Alix offered him a way out by declining the nomination, and Alix may have been shocked by the widespread opposition to her becoming the Head of State. There was no threat to her or her family.
Anyway, I am happy that she will not be the Head of State. She does not represent the unifying force that Constitution requires of the President.

hmm. so while they claim a drop in external demand for their services led to their downsizing in Dominica, they are expanding in Grenada?
It’s obvious that the prime minister is playing down the damage to his own credibility, or what’s left of it, after this politically inept attempt to force on the public someone who is the very antithesis of decency and public esteem.
But since politicians are expected to put a bright face on even the worst lapses of judgement I am not surprise by his decision to defend the indefensible. But it would have been more politically correct to admit his error of judgement which would have made look human, rather than sticking to the fiction that his choice of the controversial Speaker was the right one, something that flies in the face of logic, the facts on the ground and good old fashion common sense.
Indeed the only upside to this disastrous nomination episode is that it presented new UWP leader Linton the opportunity to flex his political muscle.
I’d bet Skerrit is not at all comfortable with what Linton demonstrated. I can smell the election excitement in the air.

Credible information from the window of the financial center indicate that there was dissent in the old cabinet and some members decided that they would publically oppose Alix Boyd Knight nomination. As the Zozyo in the window I was surprise because Skerrit told us that the nomination of Alix Boyd Knight was a Cabinet decision but are we surprise at the lies.
Boy there was one particular fouchette that was extremely vocal and was the first to threaten the PM.
So she championed the rights of women for decades,but does that include the decade ending 2010? If so, I dare say I missed her advocacy for the rights of Mrs Emanuel after the attempt on her life Christmas morning 2010.Can you DNO or anyone else out there direct me to comments,writings,opinion,advice,declarations that Knights may have made on the fire-booming of the elderly lady’s home.

If the people were so threatening why would she stay at a house where the threat is so much greater than the security she would get at the state Palace. In fact knowing her Alix Boyd would summon police protection is a fly pass to close to her – you know what.

This is our problem in this country. We focus so much on qualification – education element that we forget the morality that once was used to make wise and counsel decision for the country. Alix Boyd-Knight may be educated but her respect and concern for others particularly those who do not see eye to eye with her and those who she considers lower than her does not qualify her for such a high position in the country. We see and testify of her relation with persons in the community where she lives and look at how she treats the opposition as the Speaker of the House. To support and even nominate the said person for the office of President in the country is a clear illustration that our country is doomed.
It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.”

The speaker has over the years created an image for her self of which is very “PARTISAN, BIAS & UNBECOMING as a speaker. A position which NEEDS one to be very fair & balance.
No one must wish or carry out any harm to the speaker and her family. If they do then they must face swift justice and be punished!!
Still, this is very unfortunate that this has created an image of instability for, the office of the president.
The speaker will now have time to ponder on her faults as a speaker and hopefully make swift remedy to that!! This we can all be supportive of!!
