Gov’t ministers promise numerous projects for Soufriere Constituency

Austrie said the money for housing development is already with the village council
Austrie said the money for housing development is already with the village council

Agriculture Minister, Johnson Drigo has announced future undertakings, amounting to $536,000, which will be implemented in the Soufriere Constituency.

At the same time, Housing Minister Reginald Austrie has revealed that $700,000 has been set aside to provide for the needs of over 150 families.

The ministers made their statements at a Dominica Labour Party (DLP) rally which was held in Scotts Head on Sunday.

Drigo said the projects will be effected under phase two of the Caribbean Aqua-Terrestrial Solutions (CATS) program.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, through the Fisheries Division, will be undertaking the following, under phase two of the CATS project. A new boardwalk for the Champagne area will be constructed,” he revealed.

A new floating jetty is also among upcoming projects for the DLP in the constituency, according to Drigo.

The jetty, Drigo said, will serve those in the dive tourism industry, as well as our fisher folks from the area, for loading and offloading fish, and for the securing of Local Area Management Authority (LAMA) patrol boats.

Renovation of the LAMA building, to include changing rooms, toilets, and an interpretation centre is also on the books for phase two of the project, he said.

CATS is implemented jointly between the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), the German Development Cooperation, and is meant to addresses the increasing vulnerability of Caribbean small island developing states and low-lying coastal states to climate change.

Meantime, Austrie said the DLP has been assisting the people of the constituency from since 2008.

“And between Pointe Michel, Gallion, Soufriere we spent over $2-million taking care of the housing needs of the people of this constituency and it continues because right now in the village council of Pointe Michel , of Soufriere/Scottshead, we have $700,000 to take care of the needs of over 150 families in that constituency,” Austrie said. “The money is with the village council, your name is with the village council, that is not what we are promising you, that is what that is already there waiting for you.”

Austrie made it clear that it is not because of the upcoming by-election the government is assisting that constituency, “it’s because we know that there is a need for housing in this constituency and we are meeting the needs of the people because that is what you vote for your government to help you in time of need.”

He stated further that under housing the government has another list in place for over $700,000 to take care of the housing needs of this constituency.

This vicious cycle of promising to undertake capital improvement projects in a particular constituency when an election is due, needs to be revisited by the voters. These short term projects have very little impact on the long term wellbeing of the constituents. Will these monies help to provide long term sustainable employment for the young men and women who sit by the road side all day long with nothing to do? You don’t have to dislike one party or the other to ask serious questions. There has to be a new way of thinking on the island. When a group of human beings remain in a permanent state of survival, simple logical conversations will convince them to maintain the status quo, even though it might be to their detriment.

The promise of all those projects is strategic lying. When are the projected starting dates for these projects as well as the expected completion dates.People of the Soufriere constituency pie is falling from the sky. This is nothing new in politics. It’s like shoes and socks, they go together.Remember when government gave back pay to public servants on the eve of general elections.I know that the people of Soufriere constituency are smart and won’t be taken for a ride like suckers.

But DNO I did not see what the “CORBINET” minister, Justina Charles promised. Isn’t she the minister responsible for children’s affairs? I expected to hear her say what plans she has in place to protect our miniors from those wild….that are out there looking for fresh meat. Isn’t she a mother? Doesn’t she have grand children? In this by-election I don’t care to hear Drigo talk about agriculture. I don’t want to hear Austrie on any subject let alone a by-election that has to do with a government minister that was arrested, bailed, resigned twice, according to him, for allegations of a very serious matter that has to do with a minor. I want to hear what Justina Charles, a former first, former nurse that may have given care to minors that were sexually penetrated by a male and a nurse that gave birth to many babies. Her speech should be the most important one and that’s what I want to see.

The man gave himself that name so what’s the deal? He is on record saying he has a horse leg and a donkey leg. We giving too much protection to government officials when they themselves behaving like the names they give themselves.

I want to know if the minister who told the nation last week that he has a horse leg and a donkey leg is now standing on the donkey leg or horse leg?

All these free stuff is not good for a country that is behind,Its doesn’t matter small it is these funds should invested areas that could create jobs,Our city is in a mess bad drainage and sidewalks, The government should use these funds to do some development in the city so when visitors come to our shores they will come back again,Our city is not attractive.

People in England are being asked to donate towards the repair of the Soufriere school, yet the government is promising loads of money to Soufriere post election.

Why oh why would we remit our hard earned cash to fix the school when the government is wasting all Dominica’s revenue?

the ……… are getting richer whilst the majority of the population is living in poverty.

I honestly hate what this government had done to our country.

How and why are these people allowed to abuse my people with these wild promises before an election?

  25. Politics is associated with a lot of lies and tricks but this DLP misingtars must not be so blunt and in your face with their lies. Are they saying the Soufriere constituency use to be located in Marigot and that’s why they couldn’t benefit from any of these projects? Or, are they suggesting is because the DLP did not like Ian Pinard in 2005-09, Sam Martin in 2009-14,, then Ian again in 2014-16, but now they got a candidate they like so they will give her the sky? They must not take the people for fools man

oh really? year in year out, election in election out. Since the 90’s maybe even long before the people of soufriere crying for a jetty for the fishing village and watersports providers. Promises made and broken and ignored year in year out. If you people listen and believe again, well it would be absolutely obvious that we are fools in this country. yes it is because of the bi-election that these promises are now being made again. i refuse to swallow the nonsense you are trying to fool the people with.

Same old garbage, provide jobs for the people so they don’t have to rely on your failed government. There is an old saying “teach me how to fish so that I won’t rely on you giving me fish when needed. We need jobs and not hand outs which is given because of this election. When election is over the people will be forgotten again. My people wake up and smell the coffee and take action before it’s too late.

It is ironic you know how these people thinks. Free education to u. Calculations are done base on request. So if you needs a nail and u submit your invoice to government an I wants a 2×4 all is added. So the request isn’t the same price. Only a political novice will divide. But the good thing is Government is meeting the request. Unlike all you who have to meet the request of ONE MAN TO PAY ONE MAN.

That makes the situation worse as one person or organisation may get much more than others. i prefer if you tell me everyone/everybody will get half a bread, as opposed to you may not even get bread because others ask for more than their share. And we all know how these things go. I ask for 100,000 for a project, only 27,000 is actually put into the project. Why because a new ride have to buy, child mother want $, family member sick…you pay a man and he “never do the work”.

They belittle the people’s integrity with guns whenever the people want to protest; they use galvanize and plywood as spare parts and bribe money- cash , free bus and free drinks. After the election the people go back to being hungry while the government create tribalism and enmity among the people.

So they bribing with their guns, spare-parts and money
    Trying to belittle our
    Integrity now
    They say what we know
Is just what they teach us
    And we’re so ignorant
Because every time they can reach us (shoobe, doo-wa)
    Through political strategy (shoo-be, doo-wa)
They keep us hungry (shoobe, doo-wa)
And when you gonna get some food (shoobe, doo-wa)
Your brother got to be your enemy, we-e-ell!
