Grounding of CARICOM Airways an embarrassment for Dominica – Opposition Leader

Opposition Leader Hector John

Leader of the Opposition Hector John says it is “a total embarrassment” that Dominica has given permission for St. Lucia-registered CARICOM Airways to fly to the country.

The air carrier launched its service to Dominica in December and had announced it would begin two flights into Canefield Airport from January 2, 2011, but the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) has ordered the airline to stop flying until it becomes legal.

“I see the grounding of the CARICOM Airways in Dominica as a total embarrassment for the government,” John has stated.

The legality of the airline came to light in November 2010 when St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves refused to allow CARICOM Airways to fly to his territory, saying it was operating illegally.

John believes Dominica should have followed suit.  “Why Minister Blackmoore did not take the advice by the prime minister of St. Vincent and question the legality of CARICOM Airlines operating in the region?” John questioned.

“I am asking Mr. Blackmoore why did he take that risk?” John stated further.

The ECCAA says CARICOM Airways does not have the necessary Airline Operation Convention (AOC) and has instructed the airline to cease operations until it has been issued with the AOC.

The PM should desolve the house and call an election so this fighting can all stop.

Best of all he would have cleared his name as an outside France citizen.

I can a sure one thing he would win the election upside down.

Best case is for him to resign his seat and call a bye election and put his name back up for election.

    Politics is all timing…

Salisbury people have always been proud of who they are. This man is becoming an embarrassment to the name, Salisbury. Colleges usually prepare a person to be positive but his negativism lacks anything that is being taught in college. I wonder if he was sleeping when the sun was up and working at night instead of studing. He needs to drive the people of salisbury to the Roseau market so that they can continue to provide the dominican people with fresh watermelon year round.

I realy thought that the uwp were a force to reckon with, after having been badly beaten in the december general election,i realy wanted to be sure that t least the opposition party was the watch dog that would ensure that things are done properly in the country, but alas i was and am still disappointed, they started first like people who did not know what to do,by boycoting parliament, too bad, then they continued on a cry cry system, nothing satisfies them, the advise i have for the uwp is we need a real and positive opposition party in dominica,so get rid of those old folks in the party, get some strong vibrant young people into the party, start to restructure the party in preparation for the next general election, these crazy things they are doing just aint working, infact it is getting the people more and more disappointed at them, don,t believe i am a labourite, i am a neutral proud dominican who wants what is best for my country, by the way mr green democracy is alive and well in dominica, don,t waist your time on trying to bring what is already all over the country.

We are all assuming that the Minister did not take the necessary steps to investigate. After all, the issue was resolved quickly and it was also stated in another article that the order to cease flying was issued prematurely.

Why are we so quick to think the worse of the govt? Why didn’t the opposition, in the interest of the public, come forward from the beginning. Why wait now – as a decision to cease flying was issued?

Look how quickly the matter was resolved! Goes to show that everything is not a big deal as the OPPOSITION wants Dominicans to believe.

People think for yourselves!!!!!!!! Have some sense. Not everything is always as it seems!

WHENEVER YOU AND THE OTHER MEMBERS OF YOUR PARTY WHICH IS THE UWP OPENER’S THEIR MOUTH, IT’S AN EMBARRASSMENT TO THE WHOLE COUNTRY IN THE EYES OF THE OUTSIDE WORLD. So while reading this comment I get the news that an agreement has been reached. I still blame the poor judgment of the minister and lack of due diligence However, it is evident that the opposition is staying true to their name. They oppose everything without fail or without even understanding the details of the case. Crying foul to something that he himself know nothing about, while an agreement has been reach leave much to be desired. They really need to drop this leader, it is better to thought of as a fool, that to speak and remove all doubt. I tell you he keeps confirming this daily. But all over Roseau selling nice wash rag and sweet soap, I wish some people would buy some to wash their face. It looks like their forehead getting greasier aa!

How can the request from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) for CARICOM Airways to halt operations be Blackmore’s and/or the Government of Dominica problem? Is CARICOM Airways a Dominican airline? Does the Government of Dominica own shares in CARICOM Airways? How, therefore, is the grounding of CARICOM Airways an embarassment for Dominica?

    • wesleyman
      January 3, 2011

Simple William, The govt. of st. vincent notified the govt. of st. lucia that since the airline had not gotten the required authorization, st. vincent would not allow them to oerate there, the embarassment is that the govt. of Dominica did not do it’s due deligence in considering the safety of the airline and whether or not is was proerly authorized to conduct the flights in the aointed routes by the governing agency. It my friend is the resonsibility of the govt. to ensure the safety of it’s citizens.

Another intellectually dishonest point. Although in your case I think it’s simply that you’re not that bright and can’t analyze situations beyond the surface.

When the SVG PM (the same SVG that’s a primary share-holder in LIAT) challenged the legality of Caricom Airlines in November, why didn’t Hector John investigate and issue a press release on the issue back then?

What happened, he didn’t want to distract attention from the dictatorship claims? They were busy plotting the suspicious fire at the home of the elderly gentleman? Too many court cases they didn’t have the time?

If Caricom airlines wasn’t safe to fly, John as opposition leader should have been leading the campaign to ensure that they were not granted permission to fly here, or to make Dominicans aware that they were unsafe to fly on.

Was he hoping for a plane accident to place the gov’t in a bad light and score further cheap political points? For him to only now raise questions shows a lack of initiative and pro-activeness by your party of hate.

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Attorney General Laurenzo Rudolph Francis has said that the aviation dispute over landing rights for the St. Lucia registered CARICOM Airways has been resolved and a statement to that effect is expected to be released by the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA).

Tourism Minister Allan Chastanet had threatened to ground two Vincentian carriers operating here unless authorities in Kingstown allowed the St. Lucia based carrier to land there under a reciprocal CARICOM arrangement.

However, in a recent ruling the ECCAA announced that CARICOM Airways was operating illegally, and has ordered the carrier to immediately discontinue its operations within the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

Francis, who accompanied Chastanet to Antigua and Barbuda for talks on the issue last week, while not providing details of the agreement, indicated that the ECCAA has acted hastily in calling for the grounding of CARICOM Airways.

“We have been able to amicably resolve the matter following our talks last week and I am happy to be in a position to help clear up the legal ramifications involved in what is in fact a complicated issue,” Francis said.

“The matter with ECCAA was primarily a legal one and the outcome of the talks suggested that the regional body acted prematurely in grounding the carrier as they did not have any legal basis.

“As Attorney General I considered it my duty to assist the Minister of Tourism and Government in general in this matter and I can assure you that it was very successfully resolved,” Francis added.

He said that he expects the carrier to resume flying shortly.

“We intend giving CARICOM Airways as much support as possible in keeping with our long term goals of making St, Lucia a hub for tourism development and travel within the region, that essentially is our interest,” Francis said.

This is so pathetic; these people will support putting people’s lives at risk for POLITICAL MILAGE?? Are you kidding me? This is oh so sad and beyond ignorance. It is ok to support a party or a person blindly if that is what ones chooses to do, but when it involves risking the lives of Dominicans, it is another matter, this just proves that some people in this Dominica will support anything the illegitimate Prime Minister and his yes does in this country, people the quicker you get rid of this imposter, the better it will be for Dominica.. As a Dominican it makes me sick to read these kinds of irresponsible, ignorant, disgraceful comments from the blind supporters of labor party.. Their modus operandi is always the same, kill the messenger with mapuis! Even if they look like total brainless idiots in the process.. Go read up on what is referred to as a straw man fallacy!!!!

Typical intellectual dishonesty, carried out on a daily basis here by UWPites and co-conspirators.

Where did you see anyone supporting people’s lives at risk? People were criticizing Hector John for running to the media to try to score cheap political points every time the gov’t makes a mis-step, instead of being a pro-active opposition leader who not only criticizes but provides viable solutions/alternatives.

There is nothing irresponsible, ignorant or blind about this stance. If Hector was a diligent opp. leader he wouldn’t wait till its announced in the media to celebrate the government’s ’embarrassment.’

From the time the SVG leader highlighted this issue he would have carried out his own investigations then raised public awareness about this in the country.

If these organizations are not competed and credit worthy in their deliberations and the functions, then we have a bigger problem than we think.. That does not negate the FACT that Skerrit is an illegal Prime Minster based on his citizenship status sorry

One would think that for … man like that he would have at least some brains. But then again when you barely get a degree at 40 years what can we expect. He is soo busy trying to criticize the government it clouds his judgement. First of all Dominica does not own an airspace so he is talking about things he knows nothing about. Secondly, the minister did err in his judgement as the due diligence should have been done and made a requirement to address the OECS aviation requirement. To make s statement that it is an embarrassment on the government shows the venomous hate that these people have for the government. This need to get into power is beginning to cross desperate lines. Politics can make the ugliest monster uglier, I staying far from that!

      January 3, 2011

      @GAYnPROUD –

I do not agree with Mr. John’s methods but I think you are out of line by portraying the fact that he obtained his degree at a later age as a negative.

Applaud the fact that he has it, and he worked for it, irrespective of his political affiliations.

The minister is part of the Government and therefore they made a mistake (Thank God not Fatally) by not doing their due diligence on this airline before approving it to fly to Dominica.

Also, many airlines operated in Dominica (Pringle/CK etc) and they did not have the same requirements as this one did or needed. A plane disappeared with some men on board and has never been found. This airline, did it have the necessary approvals as this one now needs?

It is always easy to be negative and try and strike out….but people are fed up and don’t really care anymore.

Change the strategy and message, people are sick of it and its not working!

Thou I agree with some of your comments, I disagree with some. Particularly, the one regarding his educational background. I feel that for s shepherd to lead a flock, he has to have the right credentials. I am not going to applaud him for having a first degree. A first degree is nothing these days everybody has one. I refuse to see someone leading me who is less qualified that I am. Further to that, the man at his ripe old age of forty something, has not shown himself to contribute anything intellectually to Dominica. Every day we are bombarded with prepared speech and his constant ranting and verbal diarrhoea. Seriously, is this the person you people want to go and stand before a UN gathering to speak on your behalf?? Oh dear God no. UWP come better than that. That man lacks the intellectual fortitude to be a prime minister and I know UWP have many strategists in the background that can be a better face for the party. The day he became the opposition leader I saw as the demise for the UWP. They need to seriously rethink their choice if they are to survive 2011.

Happy New to Spags. God’s blessings to you in 2011.

Hope you give support and credence to positive and good things that happen in the country in 2011. Hope you contuine to oppose things because its good to do so, for the betterment of the people and not for Spags and the UWP.

Hope you represent the people in parliament as the will of an organized and genuine opposition and not for show-boating and peacocking!

Listen honestly to the voice of GOD and a conviction beyond the enticing utterances of Lennox Linton, Eddison, Ron and Groovy Bat and others.

Be your own man in 2011 and sort to chart an identity for yourself devoid of influences from those mentioned above. Be not tinted or coloured by weak and immature leadership.

Kindly do not jump on every issue like the others but choose your battles well. Just remember that it is the empty barrels that make noise.

This is getting me really upset.

To be so petty and negative …responding to every negative event should not be the way to get the opposition party to gain the popular vote Spaggs.

You must understand that instead of the ridiculous attacks on such events, you should instead convince the electorate of how you would have gone about the affair were you in the position.

For instance you could state that you would have done extensive research on the airline, contacted the ECCA ectera. Then after all that you were then satisfied and only at that time you would proceeded with the license or whatever. That would probably cover you and make most people happy that you at least did some background research on CARICOM airways.

Its high time you stop following the maipwee and malparlay strategy of your elders preceding you. Since you are now the party leader, show them that you are capable to LEAD THEM with a complete new and constructive political strategy full of policies, alternatives and vision. Spraggs, stop being led, lead instead. Give Dominicans a reason to follow you; make them see a difference in your leadership.

When will the UWP put out a press release that isn’t just trying to highlight or blow out of context some mis-step on the part of the gov’t? Is the role of an opposition simply to try to embarrass the gov’t at every opportunity?
