Kalinago Affairs Minister criticises Sanford’s statements

Ashton Graneau

Kalinago Affairs Minister Ashton Graneau is criticizing statements by a United Workers Party (UWP) senator that government has violated the Kalinago constitution in distributing the 41 newly constructed houses in the territory.

Sandford said this week that he is concerned about the manner in which the houses were being distributed.

He said any move by government to distribute the houses without the involvement of the Kalinago Council is a direct violation of the constitution as provided in the Kalinago act.

But Graneau said that both the government and the Kalinago Council are involved in allocating the houses.

He said further that the families have already been selected for the houses and they will be distributed after renovation.

It is very disturbing to hear all of this. It begs me the question whether we are ever going to appreciate the magnitude of development that is ungoing in the Kalinago Territory. These are unprecedented times. never before has this level of development ever occured within our boundaries.

I think its about time we appreciate the efforts of the Minister. For those who questions the presence of the Minister. You know very well that Mr. Graneau’s responsibilities beg him to be in roseau ” the major administrative area” on almost a daily basis. The same would go for your prized opposition. To be frank you are being a hypocrite.

If you continue to critize the development of the Kalinago Territory so negatively you my friend are an enemy of Kalinago.

We are not united Mr. Graneau, unless you call what is going on unified. If you’d spend more time here you would know not to make false statements, and ask us what we really think. But hwere have you been?

a point off correction black people did not put the caribs on a reservation we met it that way so we are not like the americans right now they are even part government that is equality thank god.

      January 16, 2011

What? Go read your history books again. When slaves were brought to Dominica no reservation existed. So it was not like u said “we met it that way.” Pure foolishness u talking there.

However, on one point u are right. It was not black people who put the Caribs on a reserve. It was the British. In 1902 the British Administrator Henry Hesketh Bell, influenced by Victorian anthropology and a personal desire to preserve “the last of the tribe”, persuaded the British government to give him permission to declare the area as reserved for the Caribs. This was done on 4 July 1903.

You people must be thankful that lives are being improved in the Kalingo Territory. Do you know how many people are homeless today? Even if our views of our governments are critical, we must appreciate what God has done through their hands. It is time for you to stop this political tribalism. Thanks.

Come on the same way the rest of Dominica can work for what is theirs then do the same too. Thats creating a LAZY mentality among the youth. Nonesense now with who in charge and who not in charge. All you so greedy all u fighting among all you selves now. stupes!!!!!

lazy old caribs!!!!!!!!! they getting every thing like they are some kind of special group….isnt the blacks special too……

those people (the karibs ) getting all kinds of scholarships more than the other communities in dominica and thats wrong

ALL THE SANFORD HIMSELF GOT A SCHOLARSHIP BECAUSE HE IS CARIB….

    • silly people
      January 15, 2011

yeah and they still acting like they are most oppress. Garnett joseph say he want those caribs to stay authentic and not mixed with other races. He said to keep other people out of the carib territory. All this to preserve the carib culture but look they get homes? Isn’t part of the carib culture living in huts? I guess I’m a bit confused.

      • Buwo
        January 15, 2011

As far as I know african slaves used to live in mud huts on the plantation and before they taken to the Caribbean they used to live in huts made of cow dung. So what is your point?

are u stupid.black african slave.are u all jealous of the caribs

      • country man
        January 15, 2011

Yow we no different from them europeans that went to the US. They put all the native americans on reservations and marginalize them.
we need to wrk to get them caribs on track – not fight them down, already they only have a very small area of the island to call their own

        • LawieBawie
          January 16, 2011

On a point of correction here. The Caribs can own other areas of Dominica if they wish too. On the other hand, other Dominicans cannot own land in the Carib terriory.

      • c bruce
        January 15, 2011

i not a carib but I must reject that statement from those blacks.

i am sure you would have affirmed of and participated in the “affirmative action” scheme in the US which specifically benefited blacks.

you sound like a bitter JEALOUS person LIAT.

you must remember that throughout the years it was the black who were getting all of the scholarships to the exclusion of the Caribs. Now its their turn, you getting jealous.
and besides, these scholarships are not coming from your tax-paying pocket.

      • anonymous 2
        January 15, 2011

Please! caribs are accepting modern day slavery and can’t even realize it, all the powers that be wish to do is manipulate the last of Dominica’s indigenous so that they may trade their culture for westernized living as have the black men and women who were made into slaves centuries before. caribs are letting their guard down and are now accepting this way of life which was once forcibly tried to be put upon them. The old trick of divide and rule is upon us yet again sheeple, wake up, this time it is black against carib, mainly Dominican against Dominican.

I cannot believe Dominica is beginning to breed this Carib/black thing! This is very dangerous, do you remember what happened in Rwanda, the Totsis and Hutis?

The Kalingo people must rise up and take advantage of the opportunities you have. Do not blame the black man. Unite with your black folks and work together! Stop this ignorance my people!

If you do not want the houses, stay in your shacks, give them to people who really would like a home and stop the nonsense. Nothing is wrong with interbreeding, most Dominicans are interbred. Most of us have a white ancestor due to slavery. Most Caribs have been mixed with blacks. We need to stop this nonsense. Are you guys going to promote incest amongst the Kalingo people? The ‘Kalingo supremists’ must stop this nonsense! Thanks.
